Episode 1

Spoiler:

Frejya is genki ruuning away from marriage and wanting to sing. Hayate is lazy but talented. Mirage reminds me of Gamlin.

After a long time a Thurvel-Salan Class Battleship. Zentradi upgrades are sick especially the Regult missile rack one.

Var syndrome is triggered by music making Zentradi go berserk like the Song of Death. Wulkure counteract these with their own song.

Unnamed old knight among Aerial Knights. Knights give me a Marduk vibe attacking NUNS and Wulkure. The type we are the chosen race.

Freyja may have missed the auditions on the wrong planet but she proves herself singing on the battlefield. Girl would make Basara proud.

Walkure's introduction.... is it too late to rename the show to "Mahou Shoujo Walkure"?

Not that I'm complaining though, since as I previously mentioned a few posts back, I've had the feeling Macross was capable of doing that since the Frontier movies.

The strangest thing is, considering the tech that previous Macross series have shown so far (especially from Frontier), the actual things that Mahou Shoujo Walkure does in this episode don't feel so farfetched in the setting. Besides, having the singers be involved in the front line fight rather than being the musical support buff/debuff is actually a rather fresh concept for Macross, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.

Seeing Mikumo jump on a Regult to cure the pilot of his syndrome with a dose of DECULTURE, now that takes balls that I don't think I've seen in a Macross show before. Also, she freaking tanks a missile barrage by herself, and breaks out of the rubble like a freaking Terminator.

Spoiler for On the tech front:

The most interesting thing for me in terms of tech that some people might not catch is seeing the Draken's jamming forming three of itself on the Siegfried's canopy. Considering that the drones deployed by the Draken later definitely don't look like the Draken copies seen earlier, it suggests that the cockpit canopies on the VF-31 are actually some kind of active monitor, rather than just being simple glass windshields.

Prologue starts explaining emigration fleets ,particularly Ragna and Windemere, encounter alien life.

Delta Squadron is attached to the Ragna fleet.

Freyja is likely the same race as the Aerial Knights due to her glowing hair thingy. I think the Windimere fleet may have went native and uplifted the local race.

I was afraid it will repeat completely Ranka-Alto-Sheryll dynamic, but Mirage is in game too, so it might fine. She and Immelman gave instantly impression of parents not knowing what to do with their hyperactive daughter.

Not sure what to think about fights, it wasn't bad... but CGI still felt somehow awkward at least compared to Majestic Prince.

Oh and Mecha ballet

According cast list the main 3 are Hayate, Freyja, Mirage, so i guess they are the main triangle.

She does say something like having "Windermere spirit" when she goes out singing at the end, and we know that one of the Aerial Knights pilots has the surname of "Windermere", which of course is also the name of a planet here, so...

I'll bet some that one of the Aerial Knights is the guy that Freyja is supposed to be married to.

I personally have no complaints for ep. 1. I like it that every Macross is different, so I just hope they won't butch the scenario like it was with latter part of Frontier TV.

Macross is back!

I thought the screenshots of the preview was terrible with the CGs and I originally had second thoughts. Fortunately, I was proven wrong, they blended quite well.

Though it also looks like Kawamori is making a gradual effort (since Macross 7) in erasing the canon status of Macross II

And what better way to do so slowly & painfully...

Mirage was not affected by the disease, probably due to her human half? Its also interesting where the characters recognized the squad she belongs to but not her more famous family name.

Seems like someone else is pulling the strings in manipulating the Zentradi, and whoever she is, she does the exact same thing as the emulators did in Macross II.

Wion (Freya really doesn't fit her as a first name) is obviously from the Kingdom. Something tells me she was slated to marry someone there. She is so far, a combination of ditzy Minmei and energetic Ranka. We will see how that combination plays out.

I am not sure how to feel about the battle ballad just yet. Its pretty eye-catching, but some part of me think its something that belongs in the vein of All-That-VF.

The way the Walkure is abusing nano & shielding technology is making Turn A's moonlight butterfly look like child's play...

Moreover, this is probably the first Macross where someone was called a hentai.

I guess using Walkure instead of Valkyries was purposeful, it wasn't the only German in this episode. They basically took "Die Walkure" (Ride of the Valkyries) literally. We even have a character named Freya (named Fricka in Wagner's opera). I hope we get some Wagner-like music at some point, lol.

Also, Mikumo will probably be the best thing about this show.

Mirage's kind of a disappointment. I was expecting an ace but she's average at best (and almost got shot down).

Red and Black guys are good though, specially the latter.

She is young and therefore has room for improvement.

Even Milia was not born an ace. She survived countless encounters, a period of time that would have exceeded many human lifespans to become what she is.

I am more interested in Hayate's skills, though.

Alto went from rookie pilot to ace in less than 26 episodes, I think Mirage has enough time.
