Aoi is to the Beelzebub story what Hinagiku is to Hayate no Gotoku: A character that was initially designed as "one of many", but who works so well that she's going to usurp a large part of the show, and take over a lead role. At this moment in the manga, I'd say that she's the most important character besides Oga/Beel, even before Hilda.

I can pretty much agree, though i just wanna point out that the same can be said for Aoi. Take her out and you're only missing the love interest which isn't actually needed. It's just used for jokes mainly, which this story is far from short of.

if you take one of them out I don't think Beelzebub would be as funny. Its like taking Kagura or one of the three shinsengumi out in Gintama. Sure we still got the main character and all but its just not the same.

I finally got around to watching this, it's pretty decent. It's not as hilarious as the manga which is odd considering there's no significant difference in the plot/story (at least as far as I've seen so far). I guess it's the delivery that's different.

Well Aoi didnt appear from the beginning like Hilda (so expectation regarding her significant is lower), and though she is not so important she at least provides love interest which is much more than Hilda does to the story (until very recent fight of hers).
