Ending up with a different girl
The thing about romance animes/mangas is that most of them by 10 minutes in, the first episode or volume, you already pretty much can guess who the main character is going to end up with. Like Belldandy and Kenchi, Naru and Keitarou, etc
Are there any animes/mangas out there that the main character doesn't end up with the "main" love interest? And ends up with somebody who is introduced later or unexpected? Spoiler for List of animes / mangas that I've watched and fit:
It has to be the main character who ends up with somebody else. No failed romance, now I'm going for the second best. I don't mind harem, but it must hint heavily towards one route and then changes. It has to be actually unexpected. |

Maybe H2 by Adachi?
It turned out the way I expected, but apparently I was in the minority there, and there was much Internet fan rage about the "surprise."

More like... the mangaka kept on making the pairing that didn't happen more and more sympathetic and desirable... so that by the end when it's finally revealed it will never happen, it was hugely rage-inducing/depressing. It wasn't so much unexpected as disappointing. Especially not exactly unexpected considering it is Adachi, who seems more interested in his stupid bittersweet aesthetic than actually making people happy.

Spoiler for Vague references to Adachi's normal pairings compared to H2:

Molester Man fits perfectly. Don't be thrown off by the title, it's not about molestation. It's also based on a true story which makes it a little more fun.
