Who is to say that Chihaya will be more distracted if Shinobu and Arata are there? If anything, it will make her focus even more to prove that she is just as good. Also, I believe that it will give her even more inspiration to be even better.

All in all, Taichi has a point, even if he's being a bit of jerk about it.

But Arata & Shinobu ARE a distraction for Chihaya that much is obvious (and I also think Arata is a distraction for Taichi but he only has himself to tell him that)
There is no way the rest of the team would understand this the way Taichi does. Anyways Taichi's intentions are clear because we hear his inner thoughts. And obviously Chihaya will run into Arata before the end, its not like Taichi can stop that. I mean I am not saying Taichi doesn't feel jealous but he has never tried to keep Chihaya from Arata because of that. Anyways good episode like always but I also don't understand how Kana lost. Like others said the way they ended the episode was weird (an unneeded cliffhanger) Favorite character in this episode was the empress.

In last episode, we learnt that Taichi is actually the most distracted by Arata (negatively, that is).
I think what he's really trying to do is shut off his own negative spiral. In some ways, you could argue that it's in the best interest in the team if he thinks he has to win every game (yeah, it doesn't really seem that much better, but still...). On a different note (or maybe it is related), this episode brought back the theme of being honest and not substituting one thing for another. This probably applies to the romance vs karuta aspect of the show, as well, though I'll probably not say much more, in case another war starts up . |

Just like Arata to take the punishment. Shinobu's appearance was great. Though Arata is causing her more problems. Of course they can't have not play, so Arata will be able to play.
The Empress gets better and better with her fighting spirit. Chihaya had an interesting opponent, its good she gets different kinds of players that she hasn't faced before. Though she was freaking out in the beginning, seeing Shinobu helped her focus. Really wonder if Komano can use Sumire's notes. Lol Taichi denying Chihaya again. Wonder why he's against Komano playing. Tsukuba really isn't up to task yet.

I don't think Taichi has malicious intent to keep Chihaya away from Arata (because really nothing in the series prior to this supports that in anyway) but I can see that Taichi is taking his own distractions and placing them on Chihaya. That being said I do think Chihaya is distracted by Arata & Shinobu although in a different way from Taichi. I think Arata and especially Shinobu can bring Chihaya's mind to individual play when its the team tournament they are playing now. Perhaps Taichi could have been more polite but he was right it's not the time to go off looking for someone. And again I think Taichi was forceful to Chihaya because of his own inner thoughts (despite what Taichi says to Chihaya his thoughts go right to Arata). edit: Forgot to say that what Komano got out of Sumire's notes might be what I am most looking forward to next week.

damn they're really making shinobu scary at times that was horror right there at the glass window but now with shinobu/the queen threatening withdrawal there is now way the association would not let Arata play.
i love how kana is doing and depicted here how she is using her love of the poems to play competitively. ah too bad she lost but it's close. girl can't get a break. i guess tsukue-kun's "self-sacrificing" ways is actually becoming negative showing he's beginning to lose the drive to play and Nishida saw through this. wonder how tsukue-kun will react next episode. Ah ah Taichi... he's kinda right but it still doesn't feel right I guess it's how he said it, with a little too much, hmm vehemence? so it just feels like a jealous and not a reason based reaction. (Still I think Arata looks better with Shinobu- for the itsy bitsy shipper in me )

I finally got to catch up on the show after about a month. Gah sometimes I hate being a science major. And I'm liking the new characters and seeing Shinobu again.
I had one question though. Back on episode 8, were those foreigners that they played against really foreigners, or did they just look like it? Or were they born to foreign parents but lived in Japan, kinda like BENI, Crystal Kay, May J., and Thelma Aoyama? |

Haha. Soggy!Shinobu was great. I wonder if she actually saw anything as she looked in on the karuta hall from the window or if she was just wandering around.
I dunno about Shinobu's affected displays of melodrama, but her inner haughty "kyoto woman" is great. Anyway, my instinct towards Taichi's interference regarding Arata/Shinobu is entirely negative. It's plain jealousy. Regardless of the possibility of Chihaya being distracted, has there ever been a case where she didn't pull through in the end and get serious? Chihaya's tendency of being distracted by strong players like Arata or Shinobu arises from her love of karuta in the first place; she would not betray that love by forgetting to respect the match she is currently engaged in. In this match, it was seeing Shinobu which gave Chihaya the shock/inspiration to get back into the game and bring the strengths/experience she has gained to the forefront. Obstructing Chihaya from being able to resolve her preoccupation with people she is curious about will only interfere with her being able to reach that state. In any case, I expect it was only a one time thing on this occasion, but I will totally laugh if Taichi will start also getting his NTR face in response to Shinobu. Anyway, so speaking of the other characters, I also agree that it is kinda bullshit that Kanade lost despite being shown to have the advantage. I guess Suegetsu-sensei is still reinforcing the difference between the 'ace' and the 'filler' characters. I wonder if maybe we aren't supposed to interpret Kana's 2 card loss as a heroic comeback on the part of one of the Yamaguchi Mioka players, reinforcing the point of their genuine passion for karuta. In that case, though, Kana's 2 card loss had to have been a real and proper one (a loss is a loss, regardless of the difference), meaning Nishida's "you were so close!" is a poor consolation. As for Tsutomu and the cliffhanger, I'm glad they are still exploring this. As I've said before, I founnd Tsukuba's praise of "Komano-senpai is so cool, for abandoning his fighting position and devoting himself to a support role" to be pretty hollow. Karuta is a competitive sport, a necessary component of that is some degree of fighting spirit. Now, while I agree that the cliffhanger might more plausibly be directed at Tsukuba's loss of fighting spirit than Tsutomu at the moment I hope to see some greater internal conflict within Tsutomu on this issue. |

The show also raises the concern in Shinobu's statement. She thinks that the team match is for people who don't like karuta. Rather, the whole day event is an exhausting experience. The players don't get enough rest. They also have to prepare the match for next day. It was shown in the high school contest. The winner of single match are not participants of team match. Of course, they don't want to use it as an excuse.

That said, Taichi's reaction was probably excessive. I think maybe the stress is getting to him. Like when he forbade the male members to start sentences with "but". If you think about it, the game - against relative newcomers - was way too close for comfort. Chihaya could well have lost, and that'd have meant the team lost. |

I thought they resolved the outcome of the match much too quickly. For most of the episode the Misuzawa team looked like they could have lost, then suddenly they were the victors. It seemed a bit too pat. I would have liked the outcome to hinge on a single match, perhaps Kanade's, with a different result in her case.

I believe that Taichi is over reacting. Chihaya shouldn't chase Arata/Shinobu right now but they are her sources of inspiration.
Taichi is being a jerk for most part and lets his jealousy slip off. He could stop her in nicer way but instead he keeps shouting. In all honesty the only one who is distracted by them is he himself. Shinobu actually helped Chihaya to concentrate again just now.
