Anime with adventure, action, likable characters

I'm in the mood for something full of adventure and action. If there's lot's of traveling involved that's a plus. Likable characters are a must. Meaning they must have their strengths and weakness. Flawed characters are more interesting than perfect ones.

This request follows a few anime that I've fallen in love with, such as the currently airing Akatsuki no Yona. I love the historical setting, the fantasy, and of course the characters.

Other anime that I loved under these guidelines were Serei no Moribito and Shinsekai Yori.

Anime that I'm liking because of the action and the characters are Noragami and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried Zetsuen no Tempest and Shingeki no Bahamut (still airing)? Zetsuen & Bahamut have all three of your criteria (adventure, action, likable characters) as far as I can tell. Bahamut is a bit havier in the comedy though, like Slayers.

You might like Twelve Kingdoms. A good sprawling series, and all sorts of characters have all sorts of problems, though a fair number struggle to overcome them.

@ Obelisk ze Tormentor - Shingeki no Bahamut sounds like just the thing I'm looking for. I don't mind comedy so long as it's not over-the-top. I'll check it out though for sure. Thanks!

I started off loving Zetsuen no Tempest but it lost my interest at episode 8 or 9. It's a great anime though, just not for me.

@ Flower - I've always been curious about Twelve Kingdoms. The way you describe it makes it sound appealing so I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks!

Twelve Kingdoms starts off slow, but after a while it picks up. The MC has lots of weaknesses, and they can get annoying, but stick with the series, when it "explodes" into a completely different level you suddenly see how important the early eps were.

Btw...Shingeki Bahamut is a great suggestion for the sort of thing you seem to be looking for, I think.

Ah, thanks. I'll keep in mind to muster through the slow start.

Thank you so much, guys. Very excited to start these new shows!

Perhaps Katanagatari, and if you haven't looked at it yet, Fullmetal Alchemist?

There are already some really good suggestions made. Twelve Kingdoms definitely falls under one of my all-time favorites. Katanagatari is also a lot of fun, traveling, and adventures. And of course, Shingeki no Bahamut plays like an epic movie, sort of like Pirates of the Caribbean. All really great suggestions.

Let's see. To add to this, I'll suggest the following:

Last Exile - A lot of plane action, plays like a world war II classic, but in an alternate world. It is also another of my all-time favorites.
Saiunkoku Monogatari (The Story of Saiunkoku) - Since you like Akatsuki no Yona, this would fall under a similar category. A great story, with a strong female lead.
Sword of the Stranger - A movie with the feel of Seirei no Moribito.
Tsubasa Chronicle - A story of a couple and 2 others who travels through numerous parallel worlds searching for the main girl's memories (feathers).
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Any version of this is nice, but I do like the new movies. It does get dark, though, but very epic.

Hopefully, these are suggestions that you haven't watched yet. Otherwise, have a lot of fun with these.

The woman who wrote the Moribito series of novels, anthropologist Uehashi Nahoko, also penned Kemono no Sou-ja Erin. It, too, was adapted to anime by I.G and the NHK. This show targets a slightly younger audience than Moribito, but the story is strong enough to keep adults involved. A young girl wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a veterinarian to sacred beasts. Later it is discovered she has a unique ability to communicate with them which places her in the middle of a political conflict. The show streams at Crunchyroll as simply Erin, but the fansub has a better translation.

Speaking of NHK shows, I'll also suggest Dennou Coil, a remarkable piece of work by Iso Matsuo and Madhouse. The adventure and action take place in a virtual world visible only with special glasses. You'll like the kids in the show, too. Coil is only available in fansubs.

Hunter x Hunter (2011): Don't get discouraged by the episode count, it's worth it. This show has amazing characters (including the antagonists) and fits your themes of adventure and travel.
