Dude. He goes to China to learn a Japanese martial art? Sure, Karate has its origins in China but it's known as a Japanese style nonetheless. Goju Ryu, along with other forms of Karate were developed in Okinawa, Japan. Besides, that's not even Karate he's learning. However, I think I'll see the movie. Just to see how bad it is.

I suspect that's exactly what they're hoping for.

lol I don't care. Will Smith may be a good actor, but he's a crap movie maker. Besides, I probably won't see it in the theaters, but I'll dl it when the DVD comes out. No way am I gonna pay for this crap

Yeah, they should have called the film Fu Fighter and Stephen Chow should have been the mentor...

Honestly, the trailer looks cute, and Jaden Smith has a promising career, so I have some honest optimism concerning the misnamed film...

I suspect this will be particularly insulting to Chinese people. Portraying a well known Chinese action star as a master of a Japanese martial art, and having him teach karate to some American to beat Chinese bullies? Especially considering Chan's recent comments about the Chinese needing to control themselves, which was construed by many to be unpatriotic, this film is a recipe for flaming.

Whoever is enough of a clown to be offended by this goofy little movie should seek out psychiatric evaluation.

Someone needs to cut that boy's hair before it's used as a weapon against him. I like Jackie Chan, but won't be wasting my money on this movie.

The thing is Hollywood doesn't give a crap about China. It's not where the money comes from.

To be honest it doesn't look that bad. I am one of those few people who did not have a high opinion about the original to begin with.

But calling Kung fu karate is just plain retarded.

From the looks of it I don't think the movie is centered around karate, but Kung-Fu . Wouldn't a Karate centric movie takes place in Japan for authenticity . IMO the name misleads the movie is focused on Kung Fu ...

Think the term Karate Kid is used to milk the original franchise and create buzz .

I might go see this just to have fun seeing how different it is from the original. I have fond memories of that movie, so despite my misgivings I'm curious about this one.

First thought.

Second thought.

to be honest when I was younger I always loved those films though I haven't seen one in years. I ... I'm not if I even want to watch this. Strange enough I didn't recognize Jackie CHan as the mentor...have I gotten blind?

lol, you're kidding right? Hollywood movies make a crapload of money from China, possibly from sheer market size alone.

??
Can you provide me with any statistics?

edit: nvm, I found some numbers..

Foreign annual box office revenue 2009:

Japan = ± 460 mil
China = ± 77 mil

Now, 77 million is a crap load of money but as a annual revenue for Hollywood movies...that's pretty poor.

Even a country like Belgium is a bigger market (± 110 mil)

people were butthurt over a technicality, so it was officially renamed to The Kung-Fu Kid...so I don't know why they changed the name back.
