Missed it completely on first read-through. Didn't register that she didn't use the barbecue lighter, especially with the offhand observation that the pilot light was out. Especially since she'd just bought a bunch of groceries. And that in calling Dr. Ishida, even though knowing that no one was there to pick up the message, she didn't leave any kind of proper goodbye message (I mean, saying that she was rescheduling the appointment? If I was the homicide investigator on the scene, I'd look at that and immediately start looking for possible killers. Maybe I can comfort myself with the happy thought of Graham facing the death sentence before Japanese courts for his twisted manipulation of a child's life, no doubt for illicit sexual purposes, ending up with an obviously fake suicide). Nah, I totally airballed all the hints...

EDIT: Hm, answered my own question about school; Sound Stage 1 has a conversation with Vita and Hayate where Vita notes that Dr. Ishida had said that "once Hayate's legs get a little better, she should be able to return to school." So she dropped out because of her disability. Gotta love that Japanese educational system; "Hey, let's throw the stinkin' cripple outta here before she messes up how our class photo looks!"

Yeah, sorry, I originally had Hayate cancelling the appointment, but I didn't want to be too obvious in that moment . Plus, she wouldn't want Dr. Ishida to be the one to find her, out of concern that Hayate had cancelled her appointment....but maybe I need to be more obvious with it?

Upon suggestion by a friend, I'm adding more references to the gas in my final copy --I think that I expected readers to be confused at the sudden brusqueness of the ending scene where Hayate is going around her house closing the windows with no explanation given, and so the readers would wonder why she's doing it and then remember the open gas valve....but I think that I was too subtle . So I'm making it slightly more explicit in the FF.net version .

Or maybe I was assuming that everyone knows the risk of a sealed house and gas leaks?

From my perspective, it was more that the entire fic had consisted of Hayate carrying out a series of household tasks, so I just wrote this off as one more, without assigning (or even considering) a particular reason why she'd be doing it.

In reading the other recent posts in the fic, I cannot help but have this mental image of Nanya's muse rushing about in genki-girl enthusiasm, while deathcurse's muse slumps in a chair with a book, being all gloomy and tsundere-like, occasionally throwing a gravestone to bonk off Nanya-muse's head when she gets out of control, yet getting shy and blushy when Nanya-muse says something like, "But deathy-muse, this story you just inspired is so wonderfully sad and poetic!"

Nice! XD I'd still have to address the subtlety though, if it's not "obvious" in a "have to think about it a little" way for most of my audience . I'll pour through and edit the fic, then post on FF.net with the additions so that I don't have to repost it here ^^;;.

My muse is constantly talking. Only thing is my body usually prefers to just listen rather than get off its lazy ass and write anything down.

Still, I'm working on that fic that was behind Door #3. I'll try to finish it soon-ish.

..........Really? =O I know that "Sleeping At Last" and "Blood Calls To Blood" touched on suicide, but other than that I can't think of another fic that dealt with it?

Don't forget "Quisling"; while you didn't create the act in question, it is, after all, a story about how a 16-year-old girl comes to the decision to arrange for herself to be killed.

Well, I've been pretty up front about how I think suicide is for cowards...

Not a fan of bringing suicide into things because these characters are a lot stronger than that. I know it's for the sake of drama and all, but I'm sure there's more in-character reactions they could have to really bad situation.
