I liked episode 2 more than 1, although I guess that's partly because there was less of the show swooning over its own main character's Manly Manliness. (Also, no floppy boobs, that's a plus.) Luke is also someone we've seen so many times before, but at least he's a walking collection of the kind of tropes that I find less annoying.
And the action direction was better... At least the camera kept focus? yay. This show is really, really trying to be a macho '90s action anime, which actively works against my enjoyment of it, but I still kind of like it so I'll bravely persevere. |

This week's episode was interesting. I like how Luke uses the rain to wash away people's memories, but I'm also not really fond of the episode's conclusion because of it too.
Luke and Sword's teamwork in this episode was cool too and I also kind of liked Luke's Madou tool gun. |

Episode 3 is out! I had fun watching this one.
We got focus on Gina, a woman that I thought was quite interesting. She's clever and seems very skilled at what she does. I got the femme fatale vibe from her character. I hope we find out more about her past though since she knows Sword already. The horror this week was based on a living computer. I guess we'll see more modern type of Horrors from now since the setting.

Oh, another enjoyable episode. The music, the mafia, the seduction and the heist have some Cowboy Bebop fun vibe to it even though a bit dumbed down. And now we know why Gina is sexily portrayed in the ED with the lingerie. It's kind of her job .
Also, befriending Gina seem to cost you a lot: she'll hit you with her charged-up car and then slap you with her bar tab That said, I really hope Nero is a recurring character even though the odds do not favor me. He's a mob lackey, but I think he still has some sense of virtue in him and he's pretty sharp too. Not to mention Gina seem to like him (as a boy-toy perhaps ).

Hey guys, did you know Sword likes large boobs? He likes large boobs so much he thanks the gods whenever he sees them, lol so funny! No way this joke will ever get old! Just to ensure it won't, here's a girl with big boobs, also let's give her a crotch shot wait, two crotch shots, no, let's make it as many as we can get away with. And of course butt shots, nothing says "interesting female character" better than crotch and butt shots.
By the way, this was some of the dumbest infiltrations I've seen in anime, and the "you're not supposed to think too deep about it, it's just dumb fun" factor doesn't really help when I'm not actually having fun. Should I really think that Gina is so dumb she removes her disguise in the middle of a mission? (Really, what was the point of removing her wig?) And can't she cast some glamour or whatever on herself, or at least have a stash of less obviously conspicuous outfit lying around? Come to think of it, they just let her in without a background check? Villain boss who got to the top by murder and backstabbing doesn't even think twice when some random woman he's never seen before offers her a drink out of the blue? Come on, come ooooon. Then again, clearly the entire heist was built around the concept of "badass chick in a bikini and heels, emphasis on the 'bikini and heels' part". So anyway Gina is another stereotype/walking collection of tropes, who spends the episode being as stereotypical as a character can possibly be, I don't think even Sword is such bad a case. Then again he's not spending episodes being quite shamelessly treated as an object for the viewers to ogle, so that probably helps. Note, show, if you're doing fanservice you might as well be equal opportunity about it, so how about Sword and Rook spending the next episode shirtless and chained together on a mission in a baby oil factory or something. ...Or at least we could have some girls with nicer boobs, really. But I mean really, it's not like Seal of Flames was particularly revolutionary with its plot or its characters, or free of fanservice or whatever, but somehow it still managed to be less eyeroll-inducing than Vanishing Line. I guess people who enjoy this sort of thing, or are nostalgic for the sort of anime trends it slavishly follows, will love it. But personally I think it's a real pity - even if we ignore the boring, in-your-face fanservice, the whole show so far is just a pile of boring old stereotypes and frankly to me it stinks of sweat. I'm not expecting all of my shallow cartoon entertainment to be unique and intellectually stimulating, but with the way Vanishing Line has been so far, you could basically see the first two minutes of an episode and then predict with a 100% accuracy what's going to happen and how, down to the types of jokes and character banter. Hell, this time around even the action was boring! No amount of shiny animation can make up for unimaginative writing. It seems the next episode will start the actual story, so I hope for some actual fun there... at the very least something that won't make me want to rolls my eyes quite as much as this episode did. I want to like this show, dammit, but it's not making my job easy. Last edited by kuromitsu; 2017-10-20 at 17:47. |

I don't get the problem with Gina's character. I won't deny she's a stereotype, but I don't think she's a bad one. She's a femme fatale and in no way an object or a trophy girl. She spent most of the episode kicking men's asses and was in control the entire time. The main character himself was played like a fiddle and gained little from his association with her (he got to kill a horror, but he also lost a lot of money and getting hit by a car as a greeting must not have felt nice). Her being in a bikini half the episode doesn't erase that.
Honestly, I don't think the show is going to change. To me, it's obvious it's targeting males that are nostalgic of action movies from the 80s-90s that were filled with testosterone, over the top action, and sexy women. It's definitely not everybody's cup of tea.

ok, looks like somoene is watching the wrong anime if you not fan of boobs and that things could be better try other shows, or even stop animes at last majority of shounen and seinen animes which are full of boobs and please for god sake not come with "feminism" and political righterouss really please, i'm not a sexist and i support equality regards gender or race or color or whatever but "equality don't means" saying what others can or not watch or like, or force your vision over others, some shows are dumb some show are feminist, some shows are sexist and that is how they are because they have they "target audience", when i go to a show which i clear don't like and just keep complain i prefer to drop like i do with 80 to 90% of the dumb harems which i normally ending hating but instead of watch just to keep complain i drop and ignore that show and look for something for my taste, it's just a opnion ofcourse and advice, if you want stay watching ok fine, but know what you are in and the show not gonna change just because of it, while it not was for you it was for someone else.
so far this show is very funny very "non most of stupid shounen or seinen cliches, like characters looking like 12 years old which loli girls with huge boobs we have more "western style" with adult characters badass mc, badass girls blood monsters and some funny fanservice here and there, that is this show.

Vanishing Line, however, is a very high profile show with higher ambitions and a much wider audience that it's trying to reach, so I'm much less willing to cut it some slack. (And I do actually want to like it which makes my disappointment worse.) But for that matter you wouldn't see me complaining so much about it if there was more to it than boring old stereotypes being regurgitated in the most unimaginative ways possible, without any particular sense of style or flair, or any actual thought put into it, by people clearly trying very hard to be cool but failing for the most part. Alas. (Motorbike Zaruba is cool, though! And maybe Rook will get an action scene again, maybe they'll even figure out how to actually make him and Sword work as a team and have them do combos and whatnot? Or am I expecting too much?) I guess maybe it's fresh and exciting if this is the first show of its kind that you see, but as someone who remembers way too many shows of this kind... nah. I'll say this, though, I would enjoy the characters in VL a lot more if they had cute animal ears and tails. Last edited by kuromitsu; 2017-10-21 at 04:05. |

And frankly, with the way Gina treated Sword (hitting him with a powered car as greetings, using him for her agenda, and bringing the tab hammer on him for no reason), I believe she deserves worse 'friendly' treatment from him than mere boob flirting. Regardless of gender, she doesn’t really treat Sword well. Sword is actually being soft on her. Even Luke who hates Sword didn't treat him as bad as Gina did . Quote:
Nope. Whether or not you're complaining in this thread, I’ll have fun with it either way . Quote:
You posted a bunch of comments on Sengoku Night Blood (SNB) thread on how you adore those pretty-boy characters with animal ears and tails that pander to female audience in that show yet you’re shitting on attractive female characters in this VL show and their portrayals that’s designed to appeal to male audience. Oh, and you don't see me constantly bashing SNB, Idolmaster, Kancolle and other mindless harem & reverse-harem shows in their own threads despite my dislike of them (I've never even posted anything in some of those threads). And yet here you are shitting on VL in the show's thread for its pandering female characters while you're fangirling over the pandering male characters in the SNB thread. Look who applied double standard now (if not being a hypocrite). But by all means, keep your opinions coming. Quote:
And you also brought the sexism card which can also be applied easily to countless harem & reverse harem shows out there that treat the male & female characters horribly writing-wise. How come you're okay with sexism in harem titles (remember the super popular Ranma?) yet you bashed this one? Heck, I found Kagome abusing Inuyasha a lot more problematic than Gina's treatment here. And is that a low-blow insult that I bolded? Are you saying that only amateurs can enjoy this show? Do you think I'm an amateur and VL is the first throwback show that I've seen? If so, think again. So you're okay with tacky, ridiculous and nonsensical elements as long as its pandering to you? *shiver* Yeah, that says a lot about your earlier complaints.

Man, you sure care a lot about my obviously misguided and wrong opinions about this supposedly "intentionally dumb" show. I know you're mostly just trolling, but you're coming across as I dunno, rather obsessed?

You do realize this show is literally a copy paste of '80s&'90s action anime/manga tropes, right? Not American movies, not even Japanese action movies from the same period (or earlier). This is basically "Garo: I Watched Too Much Cobra In My Formative Years", and frankly, I'd much rather watch/read Cobra which, let's be fair, wasn't any more intelligent but it was, at the very least, genuinely fun. Or Golgo 13 which is also very dumb but at least hilariously so. (Or even some incarnations of Devilman, and then on the less dumb front there's Masamune Shirow when he was still doing actual manga worth reading...) Quote:

And yet you accuse this show of sexism and made a big deal on how boring it executed the fanservice while at the same time you have nothing against harem/reverse-harem shows out there with worse sexism and more boring in-your-face fanservice (to either male & female charas) than what’s portrayed here. Why? For me, animal ears and tails that’s added to the characters just for the heck of it and pandering are tacky, ridiculous and nonsensical. That’s my opinion, just like yours.

OH NO! We have fan service in Garo now! That never happened before! Oh wait...
In all seriousness Gina is smart, strong and isn't afraid use her strongest weapons. If she willing let other objectify her, I am fine with it. After all anyone who get fooled by her appearance will end crying, dead... or broke. Hmmm. Maybe it's sexist show after all it threat males as easily manipulated dumb muscles. Yeah! It's feministic male hating show! No doubt about that.

So, Gina is in the same image a Faye from Cowboy Bebop. It doesn't make the show "male-hating". In fact, if you looked at the roster, you have similar types that were tweaked for Garo. Luke = Spike, Sword = Jet, Gina = Faye, Sophie = Ed.

So much discourse... And here I am just wishing that the fight scenes weren't so brief and shaky because the rest of the animation is pretty good and it's nice to have an anime Garo that is in full control of his power from the start and doesn't make us go through an angst-filled first half...
