I don't know the context of that scene, but I can tell you who the girl is (or atleast what I know anyway). She is Suzu Saotome and is the one who wrote that research book about Yakou's Raven Wing. She used work under Shidou in the Spirit Department before got it abolished, but she wasn't part of the cult. IIRC she went by a penname of sorts called Ryou while she was there. In Volumes 6-7 she serves as Douman's shikigami (but insists she just his disciple). Also best friends/classmates with Jin and Zenjirou and were collectively called the Three Crows of the 36th class in her Onmyo Academy days. She was one of few people to see Harutora perform the Taizan Fukun Ritual.

So yeah, far from little odd girl she first appeared as in the anime.

According to versionf, vol 9 revealed that Hishamaru used to be human as well as a branch family member of Tsuchimikados as BW67 points out. In her childhood she was under possession of a Fox Spirit making her a hybrid like Touji (and now Natsume in vol 10). Because of this she had been imprisoned and isolated since her birth by the Tsuchimikados until shota Yakou took her under his wing. He made her his shikigami in the Tsuchimikado tradition just like Natsume did to Harutora thus sheltering her from the rest of clan. From then on they apparently grew up together as childhood friends and some point Hishamaru gave up her remaining humanity. Also she was not given a birth name, Hishamaru was the name Yakou had given her.

So they really much more then servant and master. Interesting enough, their relationship kinda parallels Harutora and Natsume.

Ah... I hadn't read she was still human by the time Yakou met her.
I knew she was from the Tsuchimikado family, and that she was some kind of Namanari, but I thought she was already a shikigami by the time Yakou met her.

She's not there as a student, it's only a masquerade and I think she has met Jin if his comment was anything to by in episode 12.

If Yakou could make a Phase 5, then he might very well be stronger than D.

Well, D managed to create a Phase 4 shikigami in Vol 6 pretty quickly, so he's no slouch himself.

But a Phase 5 is in a league of its own and Yakou made one his bitch. Who knows what other tricks he's hiding?

Has Yakou not run into any more of his followers since he resurrected Natsume?

It's not confirmed. It feels more like a tool he made to borrow power of the real crow, we can't say until author explains.

They're pretty much annihilated in vol 7.

Edit: Uhh, I said it wouldn't be surprising if he has other hax, since he already did this much.
