Many of his short stories are available online actually, including the "Call of Cthulhu". They're pretty much public domain after all.

Failing that, grab the Call of Cthulhu RPG rulebooks, preferably the 6th edition one from Chaosium.

You could always start with Nyarlathotep, which is very short, in honor of the series. However, I find that one of his less compelling works.

Call of Cthulhu is always a great place to start, it's the most well known and gives you a good taste of his style of writing.

Two of my favorites that I would personally recommend are "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."

I notice the great Hisakawa Aya is playing Mahiro's mom.

She replaces Kikuko Inoue in the role (who voiced the character in the flash animation), by the way. Not that much of a big change, but now we won't be able to throw in "Eternal 17-year old" jokes now with all the Mythos/CoC stuff.

Well Mahiro gets a "oh crap" moment at the end there . He's going to need some more forks to get those two out of sight in time.

And talking about Kuuko, is she bi after all? That line after making the "pact" with Mahiro was very suggestive.
To be fair I think she'd be anything that let her go after Nyaruko . But did kind of get that vibe from when they were making the pact.

My personal favorite is "The King In Yellow", which will also be a good preparation for episode 4... but it's not written by Lovecraft, despite being part of Mythos

Incidentally, I wonder how you'd roll Mahiro up as a Call of Cthulhu character... His SAN points won't be very high at this point, but at least he's got that fork of his to regain sanity somewhat.

Indeed, but still I am undecided which is more moe... Nyaruko or Al-Azif... Kuuko or Este Niθ is a real force to reckon with

There's a whole mishmash of authors around the same time period who influenced and were influenced by each other.

Lovecraft was influenced by fabled Irish author Lord Dunsany, as well as Robert W. Chambers. Chambers was himself influenced by Ambrose Bierce.

Then you got August Derleth who kept things going after Lovecraft's death.

The thing about Robert W. Chambers is that while he did come up with the King in Yellow ( the marvellous notion of a play which drives people to madness, despair and death, the black stars in the skies over ancient Carcosa, the tattered mantle of the King in Yellow, and the Yellow Sign) he turned his back on fantasy/horror and wrote best selling romantic fiction and later historical fiction, practically all of which is forgotten.
Lovecraft thought that was a waste of his talents.

(I've been recently re-reading Bierce, and Chambers, am working my way through Lovecraft...)

Cover for LN volume 9. Its posing as Kamen Rider Black and Kamen Rider Black RX henshin scene.
My favorite Kamen Rider series all of time.
Spoiler for cover:

Episode 3, I really like Nyaruko's hair twin tail design. Its very cute.
Kinda surprised the attacker is his brother.
But from this episode, I assume Nyaruko have true form just like his brother.

There was something about her Brother's true form that made me slightly nauseous, to be honest. I'd imagine that Nyaruko's true form has lots of alien geometries. Indeed, one wonders, does gender even exist as a concept among the Great Old Ones?

I found this episode highly amusing, especially with the failing older brother. Reminds me of the bumbling villain type who never gets anything right and always gets thwarted just by being nearby. The brother revealing his true form then immediately getting owned was the icing on the cake, really. The "Nii-nii" shout-out early on was pretty unexpected.

It's pretty surprising how this series keeps me entertained every week. Looking forward to the introduction of three new characters next week.

I wonder where Nyaruko was keeping that chainsaw. Didn't look like there was much room under her skirt there. Hmm. Also, I'm disappointed in what Kuuko made her do for the cake. I'm sure she could do MUCH better than being fed.

Also, is anyone else surprised Kuuko didn't try to kill Mahiro? 'Cause that's the vibe I got in ep 2

Applauded. This is a brilliant reinterpretation of Nyarako-San. Who is the author?
