Sengoku (Present) 23 - Not a Problem to Solve, But a Reality to Experience
This was one of the more creative episodes of the series, and shows why I think watching this as it aired is an experience that a marathon run can't recreate. Jumping from genre to genre, theme to theme over the weeks is an experience I've loved, a trip through literature. And this week was one of the more Sengoku-ish episodes yet. It was played as serious as anything in Oda Nobuna, even if it involved sandcastles and Misawa's soulless eyes. The addition of the narrator, reading all his lines with a straight voice (for narrators often do not have faces) was the icing on the cake of this very well done episode. Tsunehisa's sandcastle was very impressive. The kind that would make you say "That's the spirit!". Even the final punchline was great, with Nobunaga failing to get a secret treasure for not reading her environment once again. And she crushed Apple Castle, that meanie. Good performance by Eri Kitamura as Tsunehisa (Fight!). Really, Nobunaga, you may want to become the ruler of Japan, but you don't barge into a kindergarten with your cleavage exposed and your sword drawn. A bit strange that the miko trio could blend in so seamlessly, since Rabbit isn't exactly lacking in the boobs department herself. Next week: We return to HanaKana's Ieyasu. Which movie about the world of entertainment will they homage this time? |

If we're revisiting Ieyasu, I expect Mitsuhide and the last lingering threads will be revisited as well. But plot isn't really a major thing in this show, and that's not a bad thing. The way it was designed was to be about something bigger. Observe the episodes not as points along a storyline, but as pieces of a puzzle that, when put together, make up a grander stage.

Sengoku (Present) 24 - Are We Live? Thursday
That's twice in one week I've been duped by a framing device. First Toshino Kyoko, and now Ieyasu. In either case, the story within the framework was pretty fascinating. The idea of an idol being exhausted with her work, getting involved in something beyond her understanding and ultimately cornered on top of a building, only to resign to a normal life resonates with me, because I've been working on translating something that has exactly that plotline, as one of its many. Checking back in with Ieyasu made for a sweet little story - she's clearly adjusted very well to her new world. And her philosophy at the end - "those who make the most people happy have done the best" is something I can totally agree with. Sweet little episode. Speaking of checking in on people we've been following, next week brings us Yoshimoto. Not quite as airheaded as Mamiko Noto's version, so I look forward to seeing what she and her underboobs have in store. |
