2Wire Modems
Currently my service provider has a crap plan which requires routing through a fully locked down 2wire modem which has a lousy firewall and pathetic customer support base.
Is it advisable to turn off the router firewall? Will there be a chance of router hijack if I do so?

If you connect it to a router, you don't really need to have the firewall on since attackers cannot easily attack your computer since the computer ports are not open (except the ones specified) since the computers are behind a NAT. You can turn on the router firewall however which can give better protection than the modem.
