Gundam DVD Sales in Japan

Gunota Headlines

Quote:
Zeta II and DESTINY 13 rank #1 & #2 on DVD UPDATED
Bandai Visual put out a press release announcing Zeta II DVD and DESTINY 13 DVD took the top 2 spots in Oricon's weekly DVD sales (Feb 20-26). While the press release made no mention of exact sales figure for Zeta II, it did mention over 1,300,000 copies of DESTINY DVDs have been shipped so far and all 13 DESTINY DVDs have made it into the Top 10 in its first week.

Edit: The numbers from Oricon's site say that Zeta II sold 92,000 copies in its first week of release (very nearly the same as Zeta I's DVD in its first week out) and the the final volume of Destiny sold 63,000 copies.

Perhaps that's only referring to sales online and not actual in-store sales at this point.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY is the only animation television series, Japanese or foreign, which has individual DVD volumes making Oricon's list of Top 100 Overall DVD Sellers in Japan during the first half of 2006.

Oricon surveys over 2,300 DVD selling stores in Japan for its daily DVD sales rankings, and over 2,800 DVD selling stores in Japan for its weekly DVD sales rankings.

A number of Japanese posters at 2ch say that Oricon does not include DVDs sold through mail order (e.g., the Internet), game shops, and other sellers.

If true, Oricon then probably understates the actual numbers of DVDs sold in Japan.

Japan has the second largest economy in the world, after the United States.

But the United States (295-300 million) has roughly two-and-a-half times as many people as Japan (125-128 million), with a relatively young, growing population versus an aging, stagnant (if not shrinking) one.

And DVDs are a lot more expensive in Japan than they are in the United States.

Japanese posters at 2ch and elsewhere complain about the exorbitant prices of Japanese DVDs; many Japanese rent, not buy, DVDs. Some have even said that they wait for the US Region 1 versions of the anime titles they want to come out, and buy them instead of the much more expensive Japanese Region 2 ones.

....those are the very people who rank STELLAR in the top 10 -.-

but then again, good news, at least gundam is at top, and no one would use "GSD was a failure" as a cheap shot in the forums :P

What I'm interested in is, how much revenu does DVD sales compair to model kit sales... because we know at least the Destiny Gundam flopped.

It's still debatable weather GSD is an overall economical success, if DVD sales is a mere fraction of model kit sales, and the model don't sell.

If the rumors of a CE movie being made are true, I'd say Destiny's success vs it's Failure is irrelivant, as it seems the CE will get at least one more major (and hopefully worthwhile) entry. Destiny succeeded merely by being in the wake of the first SEED, it just wasn't nearly as successful as it's predecessor in terms of ratings and model-kit sales (The latter being the most important for Bandai, of course)...

However, DVD sales may prove to be a different story, depending on what these stats mean. I don't necessarily mind if we have more CE, I just don't want some of the mistakes which dragged down the show's potential (indecisive character focus, massive reuse of stock footage, sizable unexplained plotholes and revivals) to be repeated.

Impulse flopped... Destiny was the third best selling Japanese toy of 2005 or something like that.

Their target was 1.5 million Destiny DVDs... They are on target to ship at least that once the Special Editions are factored in. So on the DVD front they are successful, especially since DVDs are 6300 yen per. One DVD sold is equaled to plenty of models.

Though of course, shipping != selling... We saw what happened to all those models they shipped.

I hardly think Seed Destiny was a failure in terms of ratings, both it and Seed averaged around a 6%, FMA (which ran in the same slot and aimed at the same teenage audience was a tad lower at like 5.7%.). That's much better then more otaku leaning shows (that actually aired in daytime slots) actually did.

Thanks for asking me one and a half years after I posted that, but AFAIK it was on Gunota.

Actually it was:

Gundam Seed: 6.1%
Fullmetal Alchemist: 6.0%
Gundam Seed Destiny: 5.4%

But compared to shows after GSD, 5.4% is definitely not low.

Still, this is a dead thread. Leave it dead.
