Funimation buys Crunchyroll

Just announced: Funimation is acquiring Crunchyroll. No word yet on how this will affect anything. [Source]

Well, at least we won't have to get another anime like God of Highschool anymore.
Probably.
Hopefully.
Funimation is a Western company too though...

I really think it's more to the point to say that Sony bought Crunchyroll. Whatever their final product is it may very well end up looking more than CR than Funimation.

Most of the people I know in the industry, especially on the licensing side, are convinced this isn't going to be a good thing. And I'm temperamentally inclined to dislike anything that means less choice for consumers. But I would expect the platform(s) themselves to improve on the technical side, if nothing else.

So now Sony gains the weight to not only bully game developers into changing their games to please them, but also anime producers. The age of censorship is upon us.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (the video game division) and Sony Pictures (the television division that owns Funimation) are two completely different Sony subsidiaries with completely different policies.

As far as I'm concerned, (blatant) censorship on Funimation-licensed titles has been pretty much non-existent.

I call this blatant. And this. Or their removal of Ishuzoku Reviewers. There's probably more, but these even reached me and I don't watch their stuff.

The point is that they can expand on these precedents now and even exert pressure on the creators.

That is not censorship. That was a few harmless dub changes the media blew way out of proportion.
And Interspecies Reviewers being licensed in the first place was the real mistake (since its content was way beyond anything they and their competition ever licensed). Pulling it was a way of rectifying it.

With that out of the way, here's hoping for more good anime in the near future if the sale is final.

The only real censorship by Funi I can remember came in "Dance in the Vampire Bund" where a scene shows its loli main character nude from the waist up. (Mina Tepes is actually a vampire who has lived for hundreds of years but looks like an eleven-year-old girl.)

Spoiler for NSFW:

Overall this is a pretty mediocre show buoyed up by the performance in the main role of the always-impressive Aoi Yuuki.

Effectively a monopoly....the last thing we needed....

I guess this might mean a few more titles might hit cinemas? But from the streaming side....we're flocked...variety will surely decline in favour of populism.

On one hand, the idea that my Crunchyroll subscription could let me see Funimation titles too doesn't sound bad. On the other hand, Funimation isn't available in my country, and there is the possibility that they will block Crunchyroll too.
And the chance of seeing more subs and dubs altered to include SJW themes disgusts me.

Sony now owns all of the anime streaming platforms in France. I doubt they're going to fuse them, since they'd just end up losing money. I'm hoping they'll at least manage to do simulcasts for mostly everything, since this season Wakanim (the one currently owned by Sony) ended up licensing tons of shit without having the manpower to simulcast all of the shows meaning some of them are in limbo right now. If they spread the shows across the platforms, they may be able to manage better.

Oh great, that means CR app will get shut down and we'll be forced to use the crappy Funimation app for all the content going forward.

I'm trying to think happy thoughts here.

Anyone here has any idea about the deal will be approved (by the FCC? the department of commerce?). Because I have the feeling that the day after said approval things are going to change at an accelerated pace, for better or worse.

There's no chance that any Federal agency will overturn this deal. They let Facebook buy Instagram after all.

I also think there is less than 1% chance of this being canceled or even delayed. I only want to know if there is an estimate date for the USA government to give the seal of approval, since IMO any plans* Sony has for Crunchyroll will be made public then.

*IMO the most obvious is funimation dumping all the ecchi stuff on crunchy and getting in return all the safe CGDCT series. Oh, and no more duplicate series, so MHA, Overlord, etc. will be only on one of the two platforms.

Chances of that are extremely slim (one out of a googolplex at best). They never said no to ecchi during the partnership (2016-2018; the Sony buyout of Funi occurred in between). I seriously doubt the buyout will be any different.

TBH, most ecchi is not very erotic IMHO. That's why I grew tired of High School DxD. Sure, the endless parade of uncensored tits was nice at first but it never went anywhere. Tits w/o sex is pretty juvenile.
