I get the vibe that the translator just got tired of the ambiguity and just figured "screw it, I'll just pick one". Thus doing a disservice to all the readers.

No! Boku is generally used by boys, but girls sometimes use it too. Watashi is a gender-neutral pronoun, while atashi is used by women & gay men.

I just started watching this (on episode 7) and to me Stein sort of reminds me of Lloyd from Code Geass. It's probably all in my head, but they both seem to be crazy scientists.

honestly...I can't stand Excalibur, I skimmed through episode 17, it was alright when it was just a small portion, but a whole episode? nah...too much for my taste.

I had the strong sense we were headed for a turn-around with Krona in terms of good v. evil - he/she was simply being set up as too much of a victim to be tossed aside carelessly.

I'm still betting on boy, BTW, dresses and dubious manga translations aside.
