Agreed.

People can bring up all kinds of explanations about this or this about the philosophy with Macross series, but... sorry for being harsh, this ending is really disappointing after everything I have been hoping for. I was hoping at least something similar to how it ended in Macross Plus or the original Macross series (what's written about Hikaru and Misa afterwards doesn't concern me one bit as long it is unseen).

I wouldn't say all of them were unhappy. I looked through quite a few comments and blogs, and the obvious AruSherri fans were satisfied with the ending. They, like some of us here, considered it to be hopeful or beautiful.

On the 2ch threads, spoilers at first only read: Alto missing/dead. Sheryl in coma. If AruSherri fans didn't watch the movie yet and only read that, it's obvious why they would be disappointed with that kind of ending. (I would be too!) But knowing that Sheryl is waking up and her earring flashes would completely change how they view the ending. That's what I believe. ^^

I can't say which side (happy or unhappy) the majority of fans were on though since I didn't read every single comment. The number of sales will tell...

Also the novels are not conclude because the author tragically died.

Also that unlike those disappearances, there is a note of heartfelt hope in the ending. I don't think we'll EVER find out if they're reunited or not, because I can't see Kawamori admitting this.

Wow, 22 pages in less than two days. You guys surely do not disappoint.

As for me, I'm kinda digging the resolution, as related. Closure, finally - and I don't really mind bittersweet endings, nor do I think The Hory Froating Head should only be remembered by those of some of his shows. Speaking as a fan of The Galactic Fairy, I can say I'm satisfied, somewhat. Would I prefer a happy ending? Maybe. Do I rage at what I'm gonna get, when I see the movie some months from now? Probably not - maybe some tears, but I'm a big boy.

This has been quite the ride, I must say. And I cannot wait for the movie BD's release, so I can watch it. Too bad it probably won't come out with english subs (nothing related to this series did, after all), for I would definitely fork over the money for the series and the movies, just like I did for some of my Revoltech figures and similar merchandise. I love this universe and very much this latest incarnation of it, be it regarded as the series or the first movie - I'll probably love this second one, as well, from what I've been reading here and elsewhere.

Anyway, TL;DR, I'm still feeling the love. Who's with me?

I'm with you, BetoJR. If I remember the movie's theme isn't supposed to be: This movie's theme can be summed as: "Live on, continue living on." And Kawamori saying: Instead of rewatching the tv series, you should all watch Macross Zero prior to the finale if you want to get into the mood. Actually, Macross Zero and Macross Frontier have a pretty deep relationship and connection.
In this universe, we don't know what's going to happen. Right till the ending credits start rolling, please don't give up and continue onwards with the journey!

It sounds like he wanted to give a message of hope. I wonder that if Sheryl's supposed to encompass a message of persistence and determination. Ranka isn't playing the hope part (that wasn't all that well executed in the TV series).

That's the opening line. What did it means for the protagonists?

Alto's choice is the most obvious one. Ranka or Sheryl? If he takes his chances with one, he has to reject the other. It has nothing to do with his final outcome... those were the circumstances of war.

Sheryl's choice I think, correct me if I'm wrong, but I read her disease is in her vocal cords? (God, I felt like I called that out earlier too: the danger of losing her voice. What with Yosei's symbolic little mermaid reference ). And Grace informs her she has to have them removed, but Sheryl chooses to sing rather than stay healthy. Between her songs and her life, she picks her songs.

What was Ranka's choice?

I believe it's one of the official concept artwork to be released a few months ago - when I saw this, I knew then that it was going to be 100% Alto x Sheryl endgame, Kawamori style.

I'm thinking a somber ending, if not bittersweet, in which there's a confession somewhere in the middle, which puts the triangle quickly to rest, before the characters run off to battle and one of them is NEVER AGAIN TO BE SEEN. Alto gets stabbed and dies, Sheryl disappears and Ranka pulls a Minmay.

Though obviously Kawamori was more gracious with the lovers than expected.

I thought Alto/Sheryl was endgame since the promotion pics. I saw "young girl" vs "young woman" in a love triangle in Macross, since when do young girls win? Once I watched the first episode and Sheryl turned out to be tsunderish? I knew Ranka stood no chance.

I think next time they should choose girls of the same age, because the conclusion is obvious if they want to surprise the audience.

Mmm, I don't see a lot of rage, beyond the initial shock. I'm pleased to know Sheryl's stirring. That's all I wanted.

Well, from one summary I read, it specifically pointed out that he put on the earring. Then, more fighting, confession, and the Queen folds. Unless it fell off during the battle, which I find highly unlikely because it's actually on his ear, he has it on.

Also, there is a scene during the second trailer where he puts on the earring and says, "I'll soar! Until I can end this war!" Could be the same scene, but then again the background doesn't quite fit...

Somehow, not really surprised. Japanese flicks tend to love things like this.

In case there's no official resolution to what happened after the events of the movie (I'm fairly sure there wouldn't be), I'll wait for my more complete/satisfying ending (albeit non-canon) once SRW Z2.2 comes out.

Ranka is 16 in the serie and Sheryl 17... But there is a huge difference between them, physically speaking.

The movie starts on Sheryl's concert, with her walking out from a castle made of test-tubes dressed in a wedding dress and another her in a tuxedo (the wedding dress poster was all lies....) when the song ends, Sheryl spits blood at the end of the performance and her microphone (also a test tube) turns blue as she collapses. The media reports that Sheryl is very sick.

Ranka goes to visit Sheryl at the hospital and she finds Alto standing guard outside the hospital room as they have a contract with the SMS. Ranka then hands Sheryl her concert tickets, Ranka then asks Alto out to the beach, he agrees. Brera then pulls them apart and warns Alto not to approach Ranka. Grace reports Sheryl's current state on the phone, Mijima is eavesdropping on her.

Sheryl's alone in a room sitting on the coach and staring at Kabuki poster on the wall (of Alto-hime), Grace enters and Sheryl begins to cough. Graces reveals that the V-type virus has spread to her vocal chords and she must operate to have them removed to survive. Sheryl refuses, stating she would rather die than not be able to sing, says she has hope. Grace says Sheryl can be treated if she is infused with Ranka's blood as she was infected from birth and her blood contains natural antibodies that can combat the infection.

Cut to the beach, the SMS is there and the captain is surfing. Bobby's in a bikini, Michael is chatting up some chick before being dragged away by Klan. The chick is revealed to be Luca's older sister.

By the beach, Ranka tells Alto she can feel the Vajra's emotions and those of plants as well and starts singing Aimo. The young Vajra and seagulls approach Ranka. Ranka says she wishes they could make peace with the Vajra but Alto says he must protect her and cannot do that. Ranka's hat is caught by the wind, they reach out to grab it, come closer, and then Ozma spots then and berates Alto telling him he has a mission.

The Vajra's nest is found, and the Frontier forces strike out to the sound of Ranka's new song. Sheryl's earring hanging in Alto's cockpit begins to resonate and the Vajra stop attacking. They then find the Vajra queen's huge nest that the Macross cannon cannot blow up. They blast a small hole in it's side and Alto and Brera enter through it.

Alto's plane is hit in the center and he crashes, the unconscious Alto grips the earring in his hand. Brera takes the change to strike and break the Vajra queen's neck, Sheryl and Ranka suddenly feel immense pain. Ranka faints.

Sheryl goes to visit Alto who is in a wheelchair, they go to the rooftop. Sheryl kneels before Alto's wheelchair begging him not to keep on fighting, At this moment Ranka appears (emulating the rooftop scene from the TV series). Soldiers in Exgears being to kill them, grace is surrounded and then shot off a roof. At the same time Sheryl is declared a spy and her earring a fold magnifying weapon and arrested.

Grace is tortured by Mijima and her chip implant kept in attempt to extrapolate information from it. The president is declared guilty of treason and thrown into prison, then killed. Ranka goes to visit Sheryl who confesses that she has feelings for Alto.

Luca discovers that Mijima has a plan to control the Vajra, using massive amounts of fold crystals to control Vajra who've been inserted with implants. Mijima appears to be Luca's uncle from a photo on his desk. Luca's air supply is cut off when he's in space and he drifts off into oblivion. The military begin to prepare missiles that will give the Vajra implants.

Alto tries to throw away the earring but stops himself. YF-29 appears, Ozma uses himself as an example to teach Alto. Ranka meets Brera on her way back who appears to be hurt. She is told that Brera is her brother and that 117 is investigating why the ships sank. Brera is then chased, he escapes on an exgear, Luca appears again at the SMS as he was saved by Michael. Ranka completes her body exam and it is discovered that the reason she emits fold waves when she sings is due to IVA(?) crystals in her body. Ranka offers to save Sheryl.

There's a concert at the Prison, Cathy Glass is on the keyboard, Klan's playing the guitar, Michael's on the Bass and Alto's wearing a black cat costume dancing... Sheryl's in her prison cell writing the words to Sayonara no Tsubasa on the wall in her own blood that she's coughing up. The concert is actually a guise for Alto to prisonbreak Sheryl. After the concert begins mass amounts of Vajra appear and begin to attack the main island. The military take action and the Vajra under control start off towards their home plantet.

At this moment Alto and Sheryl are escaping through underground tunnels, Brera appears. After failing to kidnap Ranka he engages in close-combat with Alto. Alto loses but is saved by Ozma in Exgear who willingly becomes a human shield to save them from gunfire. The wall is blasted open into empty space and Ranka and Sheryl are blown into the air. Alto fails to grasp Sheryl's hand. Shedding a tear, Sheryl pushes Ranka towards Alto and safety while she and Ozma are sucked out.

After Ranka and Alto are onboard a rescue ship, and Michael hears of what happened to Sheryl and Ozma he pulls back to punch Alto who catches his fist. As the fleet reach the planet, Grace escapes from her holding cell. Brera enters the command room and kills Mijima then moves in a controller.

It's the night before the final battle and Ranka confesses her feelings to Alto wearing her new uniform. Alto doesn't say anything but hugs her. The Frontier fleet begins their battle with the hoards of controlled Vajra. Alto's plane is filled with vast amounts of crystals, and he hangs Sheryl's earring at his chest. He feels a sharp pain when he kills a Vajra. The Frontier ship blasts a way through the sea of Vajra and drops into the atmosphere surfing on a rock (I BS you not).

Alto begins his fight with Brera and is hurt.

Sheryl and Ozma appear on the planet surface, apparently they were saved by a Vajra who created a protective shield around them as they entered space (how in the world did they get into the atmosphere?). They then find Grace, who gives Sheryl a microphone and tell her to continue singing.

The singing reaches Alto in his plane through the earring, and he has a flashback. He is on stage in the Galaxy fleet doing Kabuki and a young Sheryl is watching him from the audience. Afterwards she presents him with a bouquet of flowers and declares that she will grow up to have a voice that will resonate across the galaxies and be like Alto on stage. Alto returns to the mothership and continues to fight. The space is suddenly filled with federal and SMS planes. The Galaxy ship on the planet surface begins to combine with the severed head of the Vajra queen. The singing stops. The Galaxy-Queen fires and destroys much of the SMS and federal ships, it re-aims at the Frontier ship and mass amounts of Vajra come to the rescue. Brera wakes up, returns to the command room and destroys the controller, killing himself in the process. Alto begins to fly around the Galaxy-Queen and Ranka and Sheryl begin singing. Golden wings appear on Alto's plane, he uses it to stop the Galaxy-Queen's movements but now he cannot get away. The mass of SMS planes and the Frontier fleet aims to fire, Alto finally puts an end to the triangular and says:

ランカ…お前の思い…ごめんな。シェリル…遅いかもしれないけど…お前のこと、爱してる
Ranka, about your feelings... I'm sorry. Sheryl, this might be too late, but I love you.

Then the fleets fire and the Galaxy-Queen begins to fold. Alto disappears with the Galaxy-Queen amidst the sounds of the explosion.

At the end, Sheryl is in a coma from the V-type virus and the strain of singing. She is receiving blood transfusions from Ranka as treatment. Ranka places a paper airplane on the remains of the crashed YF29. Subtitles and a cut-scene at the end shows Ranka visiting the comatose Sheryl and saying "Alto-kun, please come back. Then Sheryl-san will wake up." Sheryl sheds a tear and sings softly in her coma.

The ED is Sheryl and Ranka singing together.

Sheryl and Ozma appear on the planet surface, apparently they were saved by a Vajra who created a protective shield around them as they entered space (how in the world did they get into the atmosphere?). They then find Grace, who gives Sheryl a microphone and tell her to continue singing.

The singing reaches Alto in his plane through the earring, and he has a flashback. He is on stage in the Galaxy fleet doing Kabuki and a young Sheryl is watching him from the audience. Afterwards she presents him with a bouquet of flowers and declares that she will grow up to have a voice that will resonate across the galaxies and be like Alto on stage. Alto returns to the mothership and continues to fight. The space is suddenly filled with federal and SMS planes. The Galaxy ship on the planet surface begins to combine with the severed head of the Vajra queen. The singing stops. The Galaxy-Queen fires and destroys much of the SMS and federal ships, it re-aims at the Frontier ship and mass amounts of Vajra come to the rescue. Brera wakes up, returns to the command room and destroys the controller, killing himself in the process. Alto begins to fly around the Galaxy-Queen and Ranka and Sheryl begin singing. Golden wings appear on Alto's plane, he uses it to stop the Galaxy-Queen's movements but now he cannot get away. The mass of SMS planes and the Frontier fleet aims to fire, Alto finally puts an end to the triangular and says:

ランカ…お前の思い…ごめんな。シェリル…遅いかもしれないけど…お前のこと、爱してる
Ranka, about your feelings... I'm sorry. Sheryl, this might be too late, but I love you.

Then the fleets fire and the Galaxy-Queen begins to fold. Alto disappears with the Galaxy-Queen amidst the sounds of the explosion.

At the end, Sheryl is in a coma from the V-type virus and the strain of singing. She is receiving blood transfusions from Ranka as treatment. Ranka places a paper airplane on the remains of the crashed YF29. Subtitles and a cut-scene at the end shows Ranka visiting the comatose Sheryl and saying "Alto-kun, please come back. Then Sheryl-san will wake up." Sheryl sheds a tear and sings softly in her coma.

The ED is Sheryl and Ranka singing together.

*sniff* seriously, just merely reading that summary made me already cry. The bond between the three was just so inspiring. Ranka's last line was heart-wrenching. T_T and gawd..the reaching out scene,i finally realized that sheryl had done great things for ranka. and dang..Alto, i hope you return. i do pray that you heard ranka's plea at the end..sheryl needs you.

So then the thing about Sheryl's mouth moving and her earring flashing indicating that Alto might have survived is true or not?
If instead of that she sings and shed a tear then the meaning of the scene could be the complete opposite, and Alto really died

for those who don't realize, Sheryl gets a lot of Ranka's qualities in this universe. She not only gains a history (as Ranka doesn't seem to regain hers like in the TV series) and a deeper connection to Alto. However, she's more selfish in this movie, given how she asks Alto not to fight, whilst Ranka expresses she thinks it's a difficult job yet she will still support him. So, in the end, you end up with TV!Ranka being confessed to by Alto. Because movie!Sheryl is TV!Ranka! XD

And as a closing to it all... Alto probably wouldn't (in real life or if Kawamori had finished it based on his character alone) choose Sheryl. He expressed that he was fed up with people telling him how to live his life and what path to choose. Sheryl was more selfish, wanting him to quit because she couldn't stand to see him hurt. However, he wanted to fly. Ranka is more supportive and is all about him. Whatever HE wants, she'll give him. To him, that is what he looks for, after being bashed by his father his whole life to be something he hated.
This alone proved his reasons to me for saying he loved Sheryl was out of pity (sorry if that sounds like I bashed him). I had a boy who did that once to a dying girl. It was because he wanted her to feel loved in her final moments. But I'm guessing he regrets that right now, considering he's halfway across space and won't see her live.

To put the whole thing into perspective, Alto would wanna marry a girl based on her personality, not fan based or sexuality. This is what I see. After all, they do say marriage is forever.
