I ended up back at using windows, problem was that i ended up over complicating everything and loosing to much HDD space. Their's also the part of me finding out that the sound drivers provided for my card with linux aren't verry good when you turn up the volume... I probably wont try Linux again until a) i get a laptop b) compiz and apps such as games can work togheter plus the sound drivers can work good at louder volumes...
So anyway the desktop... NSFW: Spoiler for NSFW:

You can still use the ordinary Gnome shell in the new Ubuntu, just pick it from the login screen. Or, if you're smart, you'll simply use Kde instead I tried out Mint myself not too long ago just out of curiosity, but fuond that while they did a few things better, they did several other things worse and even broke a few things... so that overall, you would still be better off with Ubuntu

KDE has a few flaws, like stability issues, network manager is seriously flawed (ADSL/DSL doesn't work), compiz compatibility is a bit more limited, the only thing i liked about KDE was that the ability to have a different wallpaper for each desktop is integrated, out of the box KDE may look nicer but gnome has more space for improvements. With gnome i had a none of those issues, it felt snappier performed better and was more friendly. I tested both Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux-Mint, Mint KDE and found Linux-mint (based on gnome) to be have performed the best plus being the most stable. Also btw Ubuntu plans on droping the normal gnome shell all togheter so soon you wont even be able to do that at the login screen, not to mention the fact that Unity is though the first thing you see and its not very user friendly, Mint's approach is better it gives the user everything he needs to be able to use his computer nicely and if he wants something different its pretty easy to change.

Compiz likewise never gave me any issues. For the network manager - true, the Kde network manager is the only thing about Kde that is junk That's why I'm using the Gnome network manager (nm-applet). Problem solved. Quote:
For Mint, as I said - while it many have one or two things better than plain Ubuntu, it breaks a lot of things which worked fine in Ubuntu. When I tried it not too long ago, several things left the impression of a poorly done hack job @yeahitschris That's a seriously dull wallpaper Can't you customise the wallpaper on the iPhone and are thus stuck with such lame stuff?
