Let put aside the blatant old-Gainax inspiration (impossible not to see) and the overdone fanservice/pandering for a moment;

Did anyone else also get Scott Pilgrim vibes from this thing, whether it's the comic or the movie? The way the humor and characters feel, as well as the general zaniness of the plotline, all seems vaguely familiar.

It's fair to say Punchline is channeling FLCL & Abenobashi, but leave it at that.

We get that FLCL is the definitive Gainax show for you - but you really should sideline your personal bias whenever you start schooling everyone else on the history of Gainax. From what I can tell, there is a large gap in your historical knowledge - like a freshman teaching 8th Graders.

What's telling is that you seem steadfast that KLK failed to emobdy Gainax (in your mind anything like FLCL), when they've clearly drawn influence from their earliest OVA days. And when you say "Eva is actually a very atypical Gainax show" - have you seen any of their other pre-eva shows to verify that? Gunbuster and Nadia are practically drawing boards for it.

Perhaps it may be best to move the Gainax Film History argument to a Gainax studio thread rather than letting it totally dominate the conversation here. Please play nice.

Scott Pilgrim draws from Ranma 1/2 most strongly; I guess you can extrapolate that to the tone and style of 90s anime generally?

Yeah I've always wanted a spiritual successor to FLCL & Abenobashi. This will do nicely.

We've had some nice "spiritual successor" anime in the past few years, Space Dandy being an obvious one.
(Cross Ange is debatable, while it's obviously a spiritual successor to Mai-Hime line, I couldn't get into it despite being fan of the HiME line)
This season we've also got Juu-ON! which was off to a great start. I'm hoping this one is just as good!

Though I heard Chira's seiyuu shed tears while recording, I couldn't believe it.
However looks like there is a touching plot actually.

I'm a fan of FLCL and Abenobashi, but this is certainly not giving me that sort of vibe. Maybe I'll give it a 3 ep rule but the first ep seemed over the top minus an interesting premise. Will see how things go.

Looks like Punchline and Kekkai Sensen are trying to compete over who has the most surreal and action-packed first episode.

Well, there's still Ninja Slayer, of which claims to be so action packed that they had to cut the run time to 15 mins lol.

Pretty dull of an episode. Dramatic backstory incoming where she was either bullied or sexually harassed.

The episode was funny and I do have a few guesses as to why that girl stays home all the time.

Ep 02

You know, I don't get it. I really, really don't get where or why or what the series is doing at the moment.

Which is prolly deliberate, and that is fine, of course. But for some reason I feel like there are no coathooks in the room for me to hang my scarf on, and that makes it hard to engage myself in.

Will try to give it another ep or two but at the moment something just isn't clicking with me. :\
