I hopped off my bike and looked around the area sharply before making my way past the long line of people waiting to get into the club known as the Roxburry. The bouncer stepped infront of me to block my path but after I gave him a smile he stepped back and made a small minute long conversation with me before I was allowed in.

The music was loud, as always, and the place seemed to be rather packed tonight. I guess they let in more than they should have. Hope a fire marshal isn't around anywhere...

I made my way to the bar and noticed a short girl sitting on a stool with a vacant on next to her. Short brown hair was slightly visible coming from her floppy white hat and between the collar of her white leather trench coat.

Nanoha had told me everything about what happened with the girl and I was slightly confused by it. Signum had told me that Nanoha was going to be poisoned but it seems that the girl couldn't go through with it. Adding in the details from our last encounter, I was interested in what the woman had to say.

I sat down next to her and felt her look at me. At first I had thought that she made people leave me a seat open by sending death glares to them but it turns out, judging by her embarrassed look, that she had probably been asking them politely to save the seat for her friend.

Alton came up to me and gave me a glass of whiskey with a few ice cubes and nodded at me. I nodded back and brought the glass to my lips and sipped it. "You wanted to see me?" I asked casually, making her nervous. This was probably her first meeting with someone she was supposed to fight against.

"Yes." She nodded and took a drink of her daiquiri, smacking her lips. I couldn't help a small giggle come from my throat and she blushed darkly. "Shut up."

"I didn't say anything." I turned and leaned against the bar and looked out on the danceclub. "You have guts coming to my hunting ground."

"This place is the source for many vampires."

"Only me and the idiots," I countered her. "The smart ones leave this place alone."

"...I see..." Hayate looked down and I got the vibe that I had just told her something that countered what she was told previously.

"Why didn't you do your job?"

Hayate kept facing the bar and stared into her drink. "She's a human..."

"They told you to kill her while Signum killed me, didn't they?"

"How did you know?"

"You just told me." I couldn't frown, despite the grim words. "This is two times you have spared her." She stayed silent and took another drink. She tried not to make any indication that she wasn't used to alcohol but her plan failed when she coughed slightly. "How long," I wondered. "Have you been a paladin?"

"All my life."

"Then why do you suck at it so much?"

She turned and glared at me and I once again noticed that she didn't have any fear in her eyes. "I'm not going to kill humans, just vampire scum!"

"Am I scum?" My voice softened and I turned to look at her. "I just want to live and take care of Nanoha."

"You just want her blood."

"I don't drink from her." Her eyes widened slightly before narrowing again. "She's really sick, I hate the taste."

"Then why-"

"Because she's special." I cut her off and took another drink. "I'm pretty sure I know what you've been told. Not all Vampires are like that, but most are. Blindly hunting and killing makes you no better than a murderer."

"I don't-"

"I know." I grinned at her startled face. "You're different."

She looked at me a moment and then sighed. "I want to ask you something."

"Yes?"

Hayate stayed silent a moment more. "If I told you I was assigned to kill you, what would you say?"

"That you were sent to die, just like Tia."

She nodded softly. "I get the same feeling somehow." Hayate's shoulders sagged. "But why...?"

"I don't know," I finished the glass and sat it on the counter, along with a few hundred dollar bills to take care of my tab. "Your drinks tonight are on me."

"But-"

"Hayate," I faced her and reached over to fix her crooked collar under her trench coat. "Find what you want in life and do it. Just because you are a paladin doesn't mean you need to throw your life away needlessly." I smiled at her.

Hayate's face reddened and she swallowed thickly, trying to still her beating heart.

NAnoha opened her eyes slowly and looked at me after a few moments. "Hey there," I greeted her softly. "Good morning."

She smiled and yawned. "I had the strangest dream last night."

"Oh?"

"Yeah..." Nanoha sat up in her hospital bed and rubbed her eyes. "There were lots of little girls with huge guns and buffaloes everywhere."

"Buffaloes?" I blinked.

"Mmn. Buffaloes."

I felt her forehead. "MAybe you're taking too many meds..."

Nanoha giggled. "They've been in my dreams since I was little."

I gave her a light chuckle. "Weirdo."

Therefore i issue the page 400 challenge. a short in 400 words! no more, no less! to do with any topic you desire. I would limit the category to fluff, but i realise thats my preference and probably not everyone elses. *pokes Wan Wan and AX for their angst obsessions* if it even relates the the number 400 in the fic all the better. I'm going to go and scribble away something random now. *runs off to find a notepad*

“Nyahaha!”

“Can't we just hire a new set of performers?”

“That would cost too much! This is much quicker and fun!”

“Rein wants to help too!”

“Mistress, is there anything else I should do beside put this on?”

“No, it's alright. Everybody ready?”

...

Silence.

“Alright, get to your places!”


On stage

Yagami Hayate stepped from the side of the stage in front of the waiting crowd. She looked at the little kids in front of her then slightly back at the red curtains behind from where sounds of running footsteps and things falling could be heard, then returned to the people in front of her.

“Dear children of the Belkan Magic School and esteemed teachers. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Happy Children Go-Go Safe and Fun Theater Group can not come and attend the show today. Therefore, in a joint project between the Ground Forces, Air Forces and Navy, the TSAB Military shall be bringing you a fun, educational and worksafe show. Introducing.... the Befriending Group!” Hayate stopped her speech and looked at the hall. The teacher sitting at the end of a row nodded approvingly at her speech, while the children couldn't care less about who was going to make the show. Scouting the rows of little kids, she saw a small pair of surprised green and red eyes, sitting near a similar pair of blue and red eyes. Taking a large intake of air, Hayate continued her almost on the spot speech.

“Today, we shall be performing the popular old Belkan Fairy Tale Schneewittchen ('Snow White' for the Mid speaking population). Due to technical difficulties, the first arc shall be skipped entirely and we shall be going directly into the second arc of the story. Enjoy!”

Hayate sighed and started walking towards the edge of the stage as the curtains retreated to reveal the scenery behind them. The current background was a forest scenery with a small wooden cottage and front yard.

„After being forced to run away from her evil step mother, Snow White Nanoha finds herself alone in the dark forest. After walking for what seemed like ages, she finally arives to a small hut in the forest.”

Nanoha, dressed up in something very similar to her barrier jacket, stepped up on the stage. She walks around and pretends to investigate the cardboard house. From behind her come Fate, Signum, Vita, Shamal, Zafira (in human form) and Rein, all of them wearing large coats that covered their whole bodies and some pointed colored hats, with white puff balls at the end.

“Ho, ho, ho we're the dwarfs from the forest and we like to mine gold and sleep all night.” the six “actors” recited their badly written lines in unison with very little enthusiasm.

“Who's this, who's this??” a little excited Rein flew towards a surprised looking Nanoha and circled her.

“My name is Snow White Nanoha... and I think I'm lost.”

“You can stay with us!” Rein continued excitingly. “I'm Happy Reeeiiiin!” she finished with a long swoosh around Nanoha.

“Sleepy Shamaaaal.” Shamal proceeded to introduce herself, followed by a long yawn.

“Umm... Ba-bashful Fate.” Fate stepped forward embarrassed by the whole situation.

“I am Sneezy Signum. Achoo.” Signum followed after Fate, her serious voice far too serious for the role,much to Hayate's despair backstage who was motioning to them to liven up the act.

“Grumpy Vita.” The little Knight introduced herself crossing her arms in front of her chest afterwards.

“And this is Dopey Zafira. He can't speak, but then again, he hasn't even tried yet!” Rein finished pointing towards the only male from the group. At that, the wolf only replied by twitching his ears in annoyance.

“Now, let's all welcome Snow White Nanoha with a partyyy!” Rein yelled and grabbed Fate's and Shamal's hand and proceeded to make a circle-like formation around Nanoha.

“Shit, I'm not doing this!” Vita yelled when Rein was about to announce that they were going to sing and dance around on stage. She parted from the group and started trampling towards the backstage.

“Grumpy Vitaaaa!” Nanoha tried pleading while going to bring Vita back.

“And Snow White Nanoha was accepted with the six dwarfs and they lived happy and exciting days together!” Hayate interrupted the unnecessary scene and brought the curtains back in front of the stage to cover up for the incoming mess.


Backstage

“This is silly!”

“There's just two more scenes left!”

“Viiitaaa!”

“Umm... but this isn't really how the story goes book-wise speaking.”

“Hayate said improvise, improvise.”

“You aren't going to disobey our Mistresses orders, are you Vita?”

“If Hayate says so... “

“Alright everyone. Ready? Come on Nanoha, it's our important scene next.”


On stage

The same decorations as before. Nanoha walked around the stage idly pretending to tend to garden around the house. From the right side of the set, Hayate appeared wearing a long black cloak covering her whole body including her head. She walked slowly towards Nanoha, pretending to limp and to walk as an old lady.

“What a beautiful day...”

“Would you like an apple, deary?”

“No, maybe I shouldn't.”

“But they're fresh. Oh and clean and juicy. Surely a bite wouldn't hurt.” Hayate searched through her sleeves of the coat and revealed a large red and juicy apple. Nanoha took it and looked at it, then turned towards the little kids that were watching, including her daughter.

“And remember kids, if taking things from strangers, always wash them before eating!” Rubbing the apple against her clothes, she took a bite and chewed it throughly, before taking another bite from the large apple.

“Nanoha! You're supposed to faint!” Hayate whispered towards her friend.

“Oh... yea!”

And Nanoha fell to the ground, Hayate laughed her way backstage, and the six dwafs ran on stage to find the mess that had happened while they were away.


Backstage

„Why me?”

„I am not the one that should be answering this. But Fate-san was too heavy for the role and you are the smallest and most fitted. Rein would be unnapropriate.”

„Who are you calling you calling small, wolf? I could strangulate you on the spot!”

„Viitaa! Zafira! Go on stage already!”


On stage

“The dwarfs mourned the death of Snow White Nanoha by the hands of the evil Witch, and they made her a crystal coffin like no other. They also placed it in the middle of a clearing, so that everybody might see the tragedy that had befallen them. But all was not lost, as a mighty prince, mounted on a mighty steed, was to pass through those realms that day...”

Vita, with her hair let loose, appeared on stage, mounted on Zafira in wolf form who was supposed to play the role of the 'mighty steed'. Vita looked behind her at Hayate who was giving her a thumbs-up sign. Zafira started walking on the stage, and carried her with him. Vita looked in front of her at the makeshift coffin, which was a pile of boxes with a white sheet above, on which Nanoha seemed to be sleeping peacefully.

She dismounted the poor Zafira, who whimpered off stage quickly and approached the sleeping girl. Vita slowly grabbed Nanoha by both shoulders and slowly started approaching her face to Nanoha's. Her eyes went from sleeping person whose breath was close enough to feel on her face, to the crowd of little children who were all looking intently at them.

“Nanoha...”

“WAKE UP!”

Vita shook Nanoha by both shoulders until the brunette finally decided to open her eyes. “V-Vita-chan?” she asked as the knight helped her get up and the two walked together towards the back side of the stage.

“And the princess was awaken from her apple-induced coma and the two lived happily ever after. The end!” Hayate finished quickly by stepping in front of the scene while the curtains were once again closing. Then she dashed behind the curtains to the safety of the backstage. At first, everything was quiet. Then he crowd started a very faint applause and the teacher facepalmed.

Yup, good thing the French Blueberries didn't eat Nanoha's muffin (but Fate eventually did ) and the Bean did bring her Water

From the right side of the set, Hayate appeared wearing a long black cloak covering her whole body including her head. She walked slowly towards Nanoha, pretending to limp and to walk as an old lady.

“What a beautiful day...”

“Would you like an apple, deary?”

“No, maybe I shouldn't.”

“But they're fresh. Oh and clean and juicy. Surely a bite wouldn't hurt.” Hayate searched through her sleeves of the coat and revealed a large red and juicy apple. Nanoha took it and looked at it, then turned towards the little kids that were watching, including her daughter.

“And remember kids, if taking things from strangers, always wash them before eating!” Rubbing the apple against her clothes, she took a bite and chewed it throughly, before taking another bite from the large apple.

“Nanoha! You're supposed to faint!” Hayate whispered towards her friend.

“Oh... yea!”

And Nanoha fell to the ground, Hayate laughed her way backstage, and the six dwafs ran on stage to find the mess that had happened while they were away.


Backstage

„Why me?”

„I am not the one that should be answering this. But Fate-san was too heavy for the role and you are the smallest and most fitted. Rein would be unnapropriate.”

„Who are you calling you calling small, wolf? I could strangulate you on the spot!”

„Viitaa! Zafira! Go on stage already!”

“The dwarfs mourned the death of Snow White Nanoha by the hands of the evil Witch, and they made her a crystal coffin like no other. They also placed it in the middle of a clearing, so that everybody might see the tragedy that had befallen them. But all was not lost, as a mighty prince, mounted on a mighty steed, was to pass through those realms that day...”

Vita, with her hair let loose, appeared on stage, mounted on Zafira in wolf form who was supposed to play the role of the 'mighty steed'. Vita looked behind her at Hayate who was giving her a thumbs-up sign. Zafira started walking on the stage, and carried her with him. Vita looked in front of her at the makeshift coffin, which was a pile of boxes with a white sheet above, on which Nanoha seemed to be sleeping peacefully.

She dismounted the poor Zafira, who whimpered off stage quickly and approached the sleeping girl. Vita slowly grabbed Nanoha by both shoulders and slowly started approaching her face to Nanoha's. Her eyes went from sleeping person whose breath was close enough to feel on her face, to the crowd of little children who were all looking intently at them.

“Nanoha...”

“WAKE UP!”

Vita shook Nanoha by both shoulders until the brunette finally decided to open her eyes. “V-Vita-chan?” she asked as the knight helped her get up and the two walked together towards the back side of the stage.

“And the princess was awaken from her apple-induced coma and the two lived happily ever after. The end!” Hayate finished quickly by stepping in front of the scene while the curtains were once again closing. Then she dashed behind the curtains to the safety of the backstage. At first, everything was quiet. Then he crowd started a very faint applause and the teacher facepalmed.

Subtle, Vita. Veeery subtle.

But then, the chances of Vita kissing Nanoha in front of an audience are pretty close to nil.

The music was loud, as always, and the place seemed to be rather packed tonight. I guess they let in more than they should have. Hope a fire marshal isn't around anywhere...

I made my way to the bar and noticed a short girl sitting on a stool with a vacant on next to her. Short brown hair was slightly visible coming from her floppy white hat and between the collar of her white leather trench coat.

Nanoha had told me everything about what happened with the girl and I was slightly confused by it. Signum had told me that Nanoha was going to be poisoned but it seems that the girl couldn't go through with it. Adding in the details from our last encounter, I was interested in what the woman had to say.

I sat down next to her and felt her look at me. At first I had thought that she made people leave me a seat open by sending death glares to them but it turns out, judging by her embarrassed look, that she had probably been asking them politely to save the seat for her friend.

Alton came up to me and gave me a glass of whiskey with a few ice cubes and nodded at me. I nodded back and brought the glass to my lips and sipped it. "You wanted to see me?" I asked casually, making her nervous. This was probably her first meeting with someone she was supposed to fight against.

"Yes." She nodded and took a drink of her daiquiri, smacking her lips. I couldn't help a small giggle come from my throat and she blushed darkly. "Shut up."

"I didn't say anything." I turned and leaned against the bar and looked out on the danceclub. "You have guts coming to my hunting ground."

"This place is the source for many vampires."

"Only me and the idiots," I countered her. "The smart ones leave this place alone."

"...I see..." Hayate looked down and I got the vibe that I had just told her something that countered what she was told previously.

"Why didn't you do your job?"

Hayate kept facing the bar and stared into her drink. "She's a human..."

"They told you to kill her while Signum killed me, didn't they?"

"How did you know?"

"You just told me." I couldn't frown, despite the grim words. "This is two times you have spared her." She stayed silent and took another drink. She tried not to make any indication that she wasn't used to alcohol but her plan failed when she coughed slightly. "How long," I wondered. "Have you been a paladin?"

"All my life."

"Then why do you suck at it so much?"

She turned and glared at me and I once again noticed that she didn't have any fear in her eyes. "I'm not going to kill humans, just vampire scum!"

"Am I scum?" My voice softened and I turned to look at her. "I just want to live and take care of Nanoha."

"You just want her blood."

"I don't drink from her." Her eyes widened slightly before narrowing again. "She's really sick, I hate the taste."

"Then why-"

"Because she's special." I cut her off and took another drink. "I'm pretty sure I know what you've been told. Not all Vampires are like that, but most are. Blindly hunting and killing makes you no better than a murderer."

"I don't-"

"I know." I grinned at her startled face. "You're different."

She looked at me a moment and then sighed. "I want to ask you something."

"Yes?"

Hayate stayed silent a moment more. "If I told you I was assigned to kill you, what would you say?"

"That you were sent to die, just like Tia."

She nodded softly. "I get the same feeling somehow." Hayate's shoulders sagged. "But why...?"

"I don't know," I finished the glass and sat it on the counter, along with a few hundred dollar bills to take care of my tab. "Your drinks tonight are on me."

"But-"

"Hayate," I faced her and reached over to fix her crooked collar under her trench coat. "Find what you want in life and do it. Just because you are a paladin doesn't mean you need to throw your life away needlessly." I smiled at her.

Hayate's face reddened and she swallowed thickly, trying to still her beating heart.

NAnoha opened her eyes slowly and looked at me after a few moments. "Hey there," I greeted her softly. "Good morning."

She smiled and yawned. "I had the strangest dream last night."

"Oh?"

"Yeah..." Nanoha sat up in her hospital bed and rubbed her eyes. "There were lots of little girls with huge guns and buffaloes everywhere."

"Buffaloes?" I blinked.

"Mmn. Buffaloes."

I felt her forehead. "MAybe you're taking too many meds..."

Nanoha giggled. "They've been in my dreams since I was little."

I gave her a light chuckle. "Weirdo."

Yagami Hayate stepped from the side of the stage in front of the waiting crowd. She looked at the little kids in front of her then slightly back at the red curtains behind from where sounds of running footsteps and things falling could be heard, then returned to the people in front of her.

“Dear children of the Belkan Magic School and esteemed teachers. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Happy Children Go-Go Safe and Fun Theater Group can not come and attend the show today. Therefore, in a joint project between the Ground Forces, Air Forces and Navy, the TSAB Military shall be bringing you a fun, educational and worksafe show. Introducing.... the Befriending Group!” Hayate stopped her speech and looked at the hall. The teacher sitting at the end of a row nodded approvingly at her speech, while the children couldn't care less about who was going to make the show. Scouting the rows of little kids, she saw a small pair of surprised green and red eyes, sitting near a similar pair of blue and red eyes. Taking a large intake of air, Hayate continued her almost on the spot speech.

“Today, we shall be performing the popular old Belkan Fairy Tale Schneewittchen ('Snow White' for the Mid speaking population). Due to technical difficulties, the first arc shall be skipped entirely and we shall be going directly into the second arc of the story. Enjoy!”

Hayate sighed and started walking towards the edge of the stage as the curtains retreated to reveal the scenery behind them. The current background was a forest scenery with a small wooden cottage and front yard.

„After being forced to run away from her evil step mother, Snow White Nanoha finds herself alone in the dark forest. After walking for what seemed like ages, she finally arives to a small hut in the forest.”

Nanoha, dressed up in something very similar to her barrier jacket, stepped up on the stage. She walks around and pretends to investigate the cardboard house. From behind her come Fate, Signum, Vita, Shamal, Zafira (in human form) and Rein, all of them wearing large coats that covered their whole bodies and some pointed colored hats, with white puff balls at the end.

“Ho, ho, ho we're the dwarfs from the forest and we like to mine gold and sleep all night.” the six “actors” recited their badly written lines in unison with very little enthusiasm.

“Who's this, who's this??” a little excited Rein flew towards a surprised looking Nanoha and circled her.

“My name is Snow White Nanoha... and I think I'm lost.”

“You can stay with us!” Rein continued excitingly. “I'm Happy Reeeiiiin!” she finished with a long swoosh around Nanoha.

“Sleepy Shamaaaal.” Shamal proceeded to introduce herself, followed by a long yawn.

“Umm... Ba-bashful Fate.” Fate stepped forward embarrassed by the whole situation.

“I am Sneezy Signum. Achoo.” Signum followed after Fate, her serious voice far too serious for the role,much to Hayate's despair backstage who was motioning to them to liven up the act.

“Grumpy Vita.” The little Knight introduced herself crossing her arms in front of her chest afterwards.

“And this is Dopey Zafira. He can't speak, but then again, he hasn't even tried yet!” Rein finished pointing towards the only male from the group. At that, the wolf only replied by twitching his ears in annoyance.

“Now, let's all welcome Snow White Nanoha with a partyyy!” Rein yelled and grabbed Fate's and Shamal's hand and proceeded to make a circle-like formation around Nanoha.

“Shit, I'm not doing this!” Vita yelled when Rein was about to announce that they were going to sing and dance around on stage. She parted from the group and started trampling towards the backstage.

“Grumpy Vitaaaa!” Nanoha tried pleading while going to bring Vita back.

“And Snow White Nanoha was accepted with the six dwarfs and they lived happy and exciting days together!” Hayate interrupted the unnecessary scene and brought the curtains back in front of the stage to cover up for the incoming mess.


Backstage

“This is silly!”

“There's just two more scenes left!”

“Viiitaaa!”

“Umm... but this isn't really how the story goes book-wise speaking.”

“Hayate said improvise, improvise.”

“You aren't going to disobey our Mistresses orders, are you Vita?”

“If Hayate says so... “

“Alright everyone. Ready? Come on Nanoha, it's our important scene next.”

“But they're fresh. Oh and clean and juicy. Surely a bite wouldn't hurt.” Hayate searched through her sleeves of the coat and revealed a large red and juicy apple. Nanoha took it and looked at it, then turned towards the little kids that were watching, including her daughter.

“And remember kids, if taking things from strangers, always wash them before eating!” Rubbing the apple against her clothes, she took a bite and chewed it throughly, before taking another bite from the large apple.

“Nanoha! You're supposed to faint!” Hayate whispered towards her friend.

“Oh... yea!”

And Nanoha fell to the ground, Hayate laughed her way backstage, and the six dwafs ran on stage to find the mess that had happened while they were away.


Backstage

„Why me?”

„I am not the one that should be answering this. But Fate-san was too heavy for the role and you are the smallest and most fitted. Rein would be unnapropriate.”

„Who are you calling you calling small, wolf? I could strangulate you on the spot!”

„Viitaa! Zafira! Go on stage already!”


On stage

“The dwarfs mourned the death of Snow White Nanoha by the hands of the evil Witch, and they made her a crystal coffin like no other. They also placed it in the middle of a clearing, so that everybody might see the tragedy that had befallen them. But all was not lost, as a mighty prince, mounted on a mighty steed, was to pass through those realms that day...”

Vita, with her hair let loose, appeared on stage, mounted on Zafira in wolf form who was supposed to play the role of the 'mighty steed'. Vita looked behind her at Hayate who was giving her a thumbs-up sign. Zafira started walking on the stage, and carried her with him. Vita looked in front of her at the makeshift coffin, which was a pile of boxes with a white sheet above, on which Nanoha seemed to be sleeping peacefully.

She dismounted the poor Zafira, who whimpered off stage quickly and approached the sleeping girl. Vita slowly grabbed Nanoha by both shoulders and slowly started approaching her face to Nanoha's. Her eyes went from sleeping person whose breath was close enough to feel on her face, to the crowd of little children who were all looking intently at them.

“Nanoha...”

“WAKE UP!”

Vita shook Nanoha by both shoulders until the brunette finally decided to open her eyes. “V-Vita-chan?” she asked as the knight helped her get up and the two walked together towards the back side of the stage.

“And the princess was awaken from her apple-induced coma and the two lived happily ever after. The end!” Hayate finished quickly by stepping in front of the scene while the curtains were once again closing. Then she dashed behind the curtains to the safety of the backstage. At first, everything was quiet. Then he crowd started a very faint applause and the teacher facepalmed.

And about Reinforce... There's got to be a way to write her without all the angst (or just throwing her into an AU). Maybe it would make her more popular with people who don't like to read/write angst. Brainstorm!

I hopped off my bike and looked around the area sharply before making my way past the long line of people waiting to get into the club known as the Roxburry. The bouncer stepped infront of me to block my path but after I gave him a smile he stepped back and made a small minute long conversation with me before I was allowed in.

The music was loud, as always, and the place seemed to be rather packed tonight. I guess they let in more than they should have. Hope a fire marshal isn't around anywhere...

I made my way to the bar and noticed a short girl sitting on a stool with a vacant on next to her. Short brown hair was slightly visible coming from her floppy white hat and between the collar of her white leather trench coat.

Nanoha had told me everything about what happened with the girl and I was slightly confused by it. Signum had told me that Nanoha was going to be poisoned but it seems that the girl couldn't go through with it. Adding in the details from our last encounter, I was interested in what the woman had to say.

I sat down next to her and felt her look at me. At first I had thought that she made people leave me a seat open by sending death glares to them but it turns out, judging by her embarrassed look, that she had probably been asking them politely to save the seat for her friend.

Alton came up to me and gave me a glass of whiskey with a few ice cubes and nodded at me. I nodded back and brought the glass to my lips and sipped it. "You wanted to see me?" I asked casually, making her nervous. This was probably her first meeting with someone she was supposed to fight against.

"Yes." She nodded and took a drink of her daiquiri, smacking her lips. I couldn't help a small giggle come from my throat and she blushed darkly. "Shut up."

"I didn't say anything." I turned and leaned against the bar and looked out on the danceclub. "You have guts coming to my hunting ground."

"This place is the source for many vampires."

"Only me and the idiots," I countered her. "The smart ones leave this place alone."

"...I see..." Hayate looked down and I got the vibe that I had just told her something that countered what she was told previously.

"Why didn't you do your job?"

Hayate kept facing the bar and stared into her drink. "She's a human..."

"They told you to kill her while Signum killed me, didn't they?"

"How did you know?"

"You just told me." I couldn't frown, despite the grim words. "This is two times you have spared her." She stayed silent and took another drink. She tried not to make any indication that she wasn't used to alcohol but her plan failed when she coughed slightly. "How long," I wondered. "Have you been a paladin?"

"All my life."

"Then why do you suck at it so much?"

She turned and glared at me and I once again noticed that she didn't have any fear in her eyes. "I'm not going to kill humans, just vampire scum!"

"Am I scum?" My voice softened and I turned to look at her. "I just want to live and take care of Nanoha."

"You just want her blood."

"I don't drink from her." Her eyes widened slightly before narrowing again. "She's really sick, I hate the taste."

"Then why-"

"Because she's special." I cut her off and took another drink. "I'm pretty sure I know what you've been told. Not all Vampires are like that, but most are. Blindly hunting and killing makes you no better than a murderer."

"I don't-"

"I know." I grinned at her startled face. "You're different."

She looked at me a moment and then sighed. "I want to ask you something."

"Yes?"

Hayate stayed silent a moment more. "If I told you I was assigned to kill you, what would you say?"

"That you were sent to die, just like Tia."

She nodded softly. "I get the same feeling somehow." Hayate's shoulders sagged. "But why...?"

"I don't know," I finished the glass and sat it on the counter, along with a few hundred dollar bills to take care of my tab. "Your drinks tonight are on me."

"But-"

"Hayate," I faced her and reached over to fix her crooked collar under her trench coat. "Find what you want in life and do it. Just because you are a paladin doesn't mean you need to throw your life away needlessly." I smiled at her.

Hayate's face reddened and she swallowed thickly, trying to still her beating heart.

NAnoha opened her eyes slowly and looked at me after a few moments. "Hey there," I greeted her softly. "Good morning."

She smiled and yawned. "I had the strangest dream last night."

"Oh?"

"Yeah..." Nanoha sat up in her hospital bed and rubbed her eyes. "There were lots of little girls with huge guns and buffaloes everywhere."

"Buffaloes?" I blinked.

"Mmn. Buffaloes."

I felt her forehead. "MAybe you're taking too many meds..."

Nanoha giggled. "They've been in my dreams since I was little."

I gave her a light chuckle. "Weirdo."
