You're spoiling saikano in a suggestion thread.

Edit: And to the kind person who neg-repped me for pointing out spoilers, I hope every series for a year gets spoiled for you

Interlude OVA was pretty sad.
Spoiler:
Compensates for all the loose ends the story left open.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Grave of the Fireflies... That is without a doubt the saddest anime I've ever seen. I even doubt that anything else could ever top that also, but I can be proven wrong

The one problem I had with that film was the unexplained inability of the main character to work. Was there some sort of war time statue that limited the kid's ability to earn a living?

I'm surprised no one mentioned Elfen Lied.

I mean, under all the blood, gore, and severed limbs lies the saddest and most moving anime I've ever seen.

Hehe. You people are gonna kill me for this.

Spoiler:

Okay, well, I did fine it quite sad. But, no its not the saddest. For me, the Saddest would definitely have to be Now and Then, Here and There. The fact that it reflected what really happens in this world makes it even worse. I like this little except from a review of it on this site:

Spoiler:

Other animes I think are really sad:

Kino no Tabi. It brought out the good and (very) bad in human character. More bad than good tho. Plus, the last episode was a tear-jerker. Didnt help that it came as a complete gut-wrenching shock too.

Kanon. Definitely. "Sad Girls in Snow" says it all.

Mushishi. That had it's really tragic moments, and brought tears to my eyes much more than once.

Well, that was sad until the ending, which I thought, in contrast with many, that it was a very nice ending. And to think someone actually called me bloodthirsty

Well, Kanon 2006 has it good share of comedy though. I believe the 2k2 Kanon is closer to being just depressing

I agree with npal. I also liked the ending Mai HiMe had. I thought it fitted perfectly for the show. In contrast to Mai Otome in which I really hoped for the death of a certain arinko...

Saddest anime? Well Air and Saikano gets my votes cause

ha, I haven't really seen a sad anime, mainly because I usually like ahppy go lucky films. However Elfen Lied probably tops the list, or the last few eps of Orphen's revenge.

I think it helps that Grave of The Fireflies was fairly grounded in reality and was something people could understand and relate to in some way.

As for the question I can't really answer as I don't think there's ever been an anime that has made me cry, but I'd probably have to go with Grave of The Fireflies.
Spoiler:
Like Key stories though it was kind of made to be a tearjerker in that it just doesn't let up past a certain point.

Also anything directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino (Pre Turn-A Gundam) was damn depressing to watch. He hated his characters, you could tell. The Ideon: Be Invoked is probably his most epic sad/hopeless project of all time on many levels.

Fate/Stay Night for its retarded ending.
