Good thing Asagiri became her friend. Dera getting rejected twice was great.

I liked Shiori, love her pocky hairpins.

Hated the bird, guess I just have to fastforward and ignore the parts where the camera focuses on him.

Quite the shift away from the plot.

Still enjoyed the episode. For me the spotlight was Dera getting rejected.

As for the technicalities this episode has a really good storyboard. I wonder who's the episode director for this one. Also it seems like this show is getting more Key Animators per episode than Chuu2koi.

Next episode. Anko episode?

I honestly have no idea how you people can hate it for Dera is manly the only one who makes me laugh here. Without it show would be empty.

Well now...seems here they have a little fanservice scene.
A Shiori episode, man I want to see more of her! Now I got 2 favs in Tamako Market. She's shy, glasses and a bit clumsy, but man those are just few of the traits that get me. Dera is still a mystery to me, but does his good job as the mascot of the series.

8/10 episode for me.

Mmmm, bland episode. Too much time spent at the school and very little Mochizou to boot. Dera wasn't as amusing this week either. Next week doesn't look like it'll be any better. I did find myself liking Kanna more though.

Episode 3:

Overweight bird stalks shy meganeko. Locals issue restraining order. News at 11.

So, in this episode we are properly introduced to Asagiri Shiori, who we've seen playing badminton before. It turns out, instead of being the somewhat cool character she initially appears to be, she's actually just extremely shy. She doesn't participate in conversations because she doesn't know how to respond. Fortunately, with some Tamako-style befriending, a little assistance from a stalking bird (who decided he was in love with Shiori the instant he saw her) and, as usual, a visit to the coffee shop, a friendship is forged.

In other news, poor Midori has been moved to another class. Not that it seems to affect them much, since they're still in the same club and they still hang out together anyway, but Tamako looked quite sad about it.

Kanna... Kanna, Kanna, Kanna. It was suggested you were OCD before, and here you had to go and prove it. Unable to tolerate the locker next to you being broken, you brought in carpentry tools and fixed it yourself on the second day of school. You might have some issues. I do, however, find you amusing, so it's all good for now.

So, Shiroi is cute, and hopefully we will see more of her as the series goes on. Next episode preview showed a disproportionate amount of Anko, so it should be good.

I loved this episode. I'm always happy watching people slowly emerging from their shells, and I felt like the pacing was very good in depicting Shiori's struggle. Not only that, she fulfilled the outsider role I expected her to play as one of the only characters who isn't related to the market at all!

The director/storyboarder for this episode was Taiichi Ishidate, the person who directed both finale episodes of last year's KyoAni shows (and storyboarded Chuunibyou's finale as well). It's interesting that they have more key animators given their past use of scheduling. Perhaps they were just a little behind on this compared to Hyouka and Chuunibyou's status at the same production time.

Episode 3

It looks like there's a reason to continue watching this show. I was getting worried after the first couple of episodes. I don't think that I'll ever warm up to that bird though.

C'mon, he's the dandiest bird that I've ever seen! Too bad that he got rejected this time by Shiori!

Taiichi Ogawa did this episode, actually.
He's relatively new at Kyoani, has only handled Hyouka episodes 12 and 19, and storyboarded Chuuni episode 11.
IIRC he supposedly said this on an obscure forum when he was still an animator:

Quote:
Animation quality is not important, story is. But if the animation doesn't deliver the right atmosphere, the story is ruined and the anime is good as dead
Not sure how trustworthy the source is, but he seems to adhere to this quote because his storyboard here was very solid. I liked the use of music as well, though that may be Yamada since all three episodes had some rather odd but neat implementation of it.

As for the amount of animators, they are obviously not as comfortable with their schedule as they were with their previous shows. They have been doing a lot of work lately, and probably are working on another project for Spring/Summer as well, so it seems reasonable as long as the actual quality doesn't noticeably drop.

You're right. I wasn't fully focused when I answered that question and neglected to double-check the usual resources.

If not for the bird, the episode will be so boring.

So I gather each episode will be focusing on a character, with Dera being in the middle of it all and Tamako being the recipient?

I wonder if there will be any actual development story wise or just stand alone episodes like that.

It's not always about a linear plot. In cases like this (and a few other of my favorite shows), the episodes are linked by themes repeated through the episodes. Development can still occur even if it happens on a gradual basis over a series of events instead of a series of interlinked ones.

The Western fandom needs to stop viewing every series through the lens of "plot". All of them have a story, but those stories aren't always presented in the same fashion. Shiori may very well end up influencing later events because she started opening up to others this week.

There's quite a bit of mystery on that bird. The #1 reason being: "Why does it talk?"
