My guess is Yukariko was chosen to be Akahito and like the anime, accidentally choose Yuko to be sacrificed.

Yukariko was going to sacrifice herself but it was Yuko instead who got sacrificed hence her guilt of blaming herself over her sister's death.

Really, was medicine really that bad in the 1940-50s? Believing superstitions is really a bad judgement. Ghost are believable, a curse is well..............I need more convincing if they are true.

Well...we're talking about small town doctors and a time period where Japan was greatly affected by WW2. It is likely that if a new, stronger disease broke out in the country side that they would not be able to handle it properly and outside help would be scarce.

Then there's a problem of people needing an explanation to what is happening. This is where the concept of God(s) came from, the need to explain that which they know nothing about...our ancestors could not explain why lightning rained down from the sky during a storm so it was easier for them to think "A being more powerful than us is doing it." and since lightning was a destructing natural occurrence "That higher being must be angry at us."
Same thing happens here, the concept of a God was already present, all it was needed was a disease that nobody could cure or explain through science for the people to turn to superstition, this is especially easy for older people who have little connection to science. Hell...my grandmother still believes Adam and Even were the first humans created by God and was completely confused when I explained the theory of evolution.

It still happens today actually, when certain diseases medicine can't cure yet show up a lot of religious people claim it to be punishment from God. However people today have a lot more connection with science, they are much more educated than in previous decades thus we have a much diferent mindset when it comes to that which cannot be explained...we lean less toward the "Can't explain it thus God did it." and more to the "Can't explain it...yet."

In this flashback Yuuko seems to be the one closest to this mindset while everyone else is falling to fear thus reaching out for an explanation they can understand.

Thus...damn you old people, you ruin everything.

The story actually seems to be following the anime, with the exception of Asa and so on. So soon we should be expecting Yukariko to become Akahito-sama and picking Yuuko as a sacrifice by mistake.

Don't think so, upon reading it again. The old guys says the sacrifice has to be pure and suitable. Since Yuuko is the most rational minded and hasn't succumb to superstition like her sister, wouldn't Yuuko be the most appropriated.

By pure they most likely mean a virgin, both of them match the description and with Yukariko being so open toward superstition it would not be unlike her to accept the role of Akahito and in turn picking Yuuko as the sacrifice.
Or Yukariko is picked and Yuuko takes her place.
