That didn't surprise at all. People might not have noticed, but Index's OST appeared several times throughout the Railgun's series.

It would be nice if that was actually true....

well o sure enjoyed how the ova used most of the best Bgm from index S1, and the ova itself was better than a lot of episodes of the railgun series, but it makes me think that it seems that touma used to stalk mikoto waiting to meet her in thet same spot.

Dear lord... It seems the moderators don't want to make a thread for the OVA...

Anyways, loved the OVA. It really reminded me of how enjoyable that series was...
*sigh*
The OP was absolutely wonderful. The ED's atmosphere was also nice, but the visuals were just reusing magazine scans and stuff...
The plot was a lot more serious than I expected, but it did pretty good, so okay there.

The OVA ... just reminded me that there will be no more Railgun for a very long time. Instead i have to deal with Index again.

The openings were just amazing, especially the first one

I first thought this would be your average plotline where Mikoto and her friends just go through the average day in the city.. But then all of a sudden the plot turned serious

Hey, I'm not quite sure where to ask this but this seems like the safest bet.

I heard that after episode 12 of Railgun, the anime takes on an original plotline. So at what volume/chapter should I begin to read the manga?

If you mean "what volume/chapter do the first 12 episodes cover, so where should I start to read the manga storyline that wasn't animated," then start with volume 4.

But you should watch the whole season of railgun because the stories are all supervised/written by the author of the light novel.

But it would explain future events and answer some whys in Index.
Won't tell which ones, but it's a nice complementary series to watch.

I can agree with this. Also, I never liked Kuroko until I watched Railgun, when she appeared in Index she was so annoying, but she becomes a character of her own right in Railgun. <3!

Yeah I know you are right and what are you talking about (spoiler in this series so, lets avoid taling about what) but the weakness doesn't come from the plot itself but from how extended/directed the arc was, also "Miss Obvious Villainess" was a downfall .

Railgun BD/DVD first week sales:

BD: 2: *20,639 *20,639
DVD: 10: *8,306 *8,306

So 28,945 sales of the OVA overall in its first week. Wow.

And for perspective, here are total sales for all Railgun anime volumes.

Quote:
-Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (BD+DVD) 8 volume sets:
*Key: Volume: Initial sales | Second Week Sales | Third Week Sales | Fourth Week Sales | Total Sales | Release Date (※Total Sales Breakdown)

Volume 1: 20,337 | 23,450 | 24,141 | 24,653 | 26,886 | 01/29/10 (※BD 11th week sales: 18,976; DVD 2nd week sales: 7,910)

Volume 2: 18,383 | 23,028 | 23,653 | 24,036 | 25,652 | 02/26/10 (※BD 8th week sales: 17,740; DVD 3rd week sales: 7,912)

Volume 3: 19,508 | 22,585 | 23,177 | 23,439 | 24,057 | 03/26/10 (※BD 7th week sales: 16,856; DVD 2nd week sales: 7,201)

Volume 4: 21,232 | 23,347 | 23,763 | 23,988 | 24,340 | 04/28/10 (※BD 5th week sales: 16,937; DVD 2nd week sales: 7,403)

Volume 5: 20,781 | 23,356 | 23,809 | 24,038 | 24,403 | 05/28/10 (※BD 4th week sales: 16,868; DVD 3rd week sales: 7,535)

Volume 6: 20,030 | 23,259 | 23,676 | 23,914 | 24,254 | 06/25/10 (※BD 4th week sales: 17,072; DVD 3rd week sales: 7,182)

Volume 7: 20,436 | 21,885 | 22,318 | **,*** | 22,318 | 07/30/10 (※BD 3rd week sales: 16,653; DVD 1st week sales: 5,665)

Volume 8: 19,725 | 23,614 | 24,047 | **,*** | 24,047 | 08/27/10 (※BD 2nd week sales: 17,033; DVD 2nd week sales: 7,014)

OVA: 28,945 | **,*** | **,*** | **,*** | 28,945 | 10/29/10 (※BD 1st week sales: 20,639; DVD 1st week sales: 8,306)
Each BD costs ¥7,875 and each DVD costs ¥6,825. I might do the calculations if no one else wants to.

EDIT: Okay, decided to do it.

158,774 Blu-ray sold total | 58,218 DVD sold total | 216,992 BD+DVD sold total |

Roughly ¥1,250,345,250 made from Blu-ray sales, which is roughly $15.19 million in USD

Roughly ¥397,337,850 made from DVD sales, which is roughly $4.83 million in USD

So, together that makes ¥1,647,683,100, or roughly $20.13 million in USD

Now if only we knew the production costs so we could calculate how much profit J.C.Staff made.

Well, no, keep in mind a few things:

a) A lot of people don't pay MSRP for DVDs or BDs (Amazon sells at 27% off, for example)

b) The stores, distributors, and other middlemen all take a cut of that, so the actual amount of revenue received by the manufacturer is less than half. Not to mention there is actually a cost to produce the merchandise as well.

c) Geneon is the publisher/distributor of the show; the money doesn't go to J.C.Staff. (It's quite possible that J.C.Staff may have been paid a fixed rate for their work; hard to say...)

d) The actual animation itself is one of the smaller costs associated with the production. A lot more money is spent on broadcasting and promotion, among other things.

So I don't think a simplistic calculation of just multiplying the number of DVDs/BDs sold by the MSRP really tells us much. What we can say, though, is that this show was certainly among the more successful shows of the year.

Concerning point a, I took that into account; IIRC Amazon pays the publishers back for the 27% cut they give to consumers, so I didn't think it mattered whether or not I took the 27% cut into consideration or not. You're right about everything else though, and thanks for putting more perspective out. And I'd say it was the third most successful this year, behind K-ON!! and Angel Beats.
