Horror with a Heavy Mystery Aspect

As the title states, I'm interested in series involving strange happenings with the viewer unaware of what exactly is going on until much later (even better if the main characters don't know either). Basically something similar to Higurashi/Umineko and the early parts of Shiki. Not looking for a series like Death Note that involves a mystery with the viewer in on it from the beginning. Here's my MAL just in case: http://myanimelist.net/profile/RWBladewing. Thanks in advance.

Serial experiments Lain, maybe it's really not much focused on horror but a lot of disturbing (and definitely strange) stuff happen.

I also suggest to try Perfect Blue, while it's more of a thriller than an horror it's simply the best animated mystery movie out there. If you enjoyed Umineko you'll enjoy this one too, since at a certain point illusion and reality begin to overlap.

Not anime, but you might enjoy the works of John Dickson Carr / Carter Dickson.

Monster and 20th Century Boys. Not strictly horror titles but very atmospheric and with plenty of slowly revealed mysteries. And incredible characterization to boot.

And I second Perfect Blue.

Paranoia Agent isn't on your list, and should be. Satoshi Kon taking on TV brilliantly, full of suspense and psychological disquiet.

Heh I was indecided about mentioning Paranoia Agent because it's really... not horror, but yeah it's a wonderful anime.

OP, if you don't care about the lack of murders in your mystery, watch this one.

Ghost Hunt. Arc build, but it definitely is engineered like that. The bloodstained labyrinth part in particular is very good.

Also check out Mononoke if you don't mind the arc build. Best anime horror show I've seen at least.

Thanks for the suggestions all, will be checking out all these if I can. Paranoia Agent and Lain may be something of a problem though; I can't find either for under $200 and I'm not sure I want to spend that much on a speculative purchase. Is there anywhere I can get these for less that I may be missing?
