Yeah, no. I actually reread some of the early chapters and they definitelly still make me laugh. Unlike that first episode at best got me to smirk.
Timing is part of the issue. Kaguya doesn't have the frantic feeling like other comedies. It pretty much relies on setting up a situation where those two seriously are trying to outmsart one another, which should be given FULL weight of two immense intelects battling and THEN when they are about to reach the creshendo... you throw a PIE (Fujiwara) into their faces (plans). So even though the anime pretty much does all they do, in the manga it really felt like pretty much every one of their encounter was a series of true back and forths. Here? Not so much, since it all kinda speeds by. And secondly as Tactics says. The art of the manga adds a LOT. The mangaka did outright horror before for some reason deciding to do a romantic comedy. And as such his artstyle adds a lot. ESPECIALLY to the mental battles and even more to that to the moments of shock or utter loathing. Because those seem taken from some actual horror Manga. So when Kaguya looks down on Fujiwara, you could totally transplant her into a horror manga and have her take Fujiwara's head while laughing and it wouldn't feel out of place. Same with her HOW CUTE moments. Just thinking of it SCARES out of his wits President. Hell, it's almost a meeme at this point to get a bunch of images from the manga (you don't have to try much to do so) and then to show them to people who'll then assume it's a horror manga. It's why I say this adaptation is okay, but hasn't so far truly got Kaguya.

I admit the anime have issue with paving and that can cut some of the narration to free up some time.

Episode 2
Chika's cuteness just never ceases to amuse me. Too adorable. Mind games continue this episode and I find it pretty entertaining. In particular, there's Kaguya's reactions and chemistry between the main cast. Shirogane also got a smartphone! I like his way of thinking of the modern generation about socializing. Seems we got the inner thoughts from chapter 7 too. Pretty amusing scenarios for the imaginations. This show just keeps on giving. The VA of the main characters really work out for this show.

Thus begins the legend of the monster virgin. Amazing that his advice actually worked. Kabedon never fails, I guess
Despite the lack of Fujiwara in that chapter, that was the funniest of the episode. Kaguya's reactions were gold. God thing Miyuki noticed her in time, this allowed him to score some major points instead of totally screwing himself over. They really was no need to keep it though. It added nothing and was just a waste of time.

Prez giving love advice was always one of my favorite of the earlier chapters. It feels good to see it be done justice by the anime.

They have some great dedication to this show no doubt. The ED was cute and told a nice little story within Kaguya's dream. Also enjoying the OP the more times I watch/listen to it.
It is just a fun show. The characters are great, likable, and the comedy works for me.

I liked how Ishigami was some sort of depressed spirit in the mountain imaginations. xD
Leave it to Fujiwara to make Shirogane and Kaguya feel like their intense sea vs mountain battle was wasted for nothing.^^ Also poor Maki, first episode she's in and she is already in tears. Lets hope they leave out the gags from the manga else this won't be the last time we see her crying about her crush going out with her best friend. Also have to say I am impressed the anime even took the manga art change into consideration. XDDD Spoiler for Example:

"It'd be like that's what I was thinking!" AKA that was exactly what you were thinking, Kaguya .
Curses, foiled by a flip phone . She's got nothing on Chika's "tanks," but Kaguya in that red bikini still looked pretty good. Both girls look great in swimsuits . Ishigami cameo for the win . With her performance as Kaguya, I feel like Aoi Kaga is going to be a seiyuu to watch moving forward. She has some incredible and dynamic range, and she voices Kaguya and all her different facets and dialogue so well . Shirogane's love advice was as hilarious as I remembered it being, especially with Kaguya's reactions. The most hilarious part is that all his suggestions and ideas were actually accurate . So was that like a through-the-wall Kabedon? It's super effective . The ending was pretty nice, both with very appropriate music and some nice visuals for Kaguya's dream .

According to a commenter at LiA, that 4 minute recap was from that chapter in the manga, which was the first after the series switched magazines, and they didn't bother to come up with any new material to fill the time. It explains why it exists but it still sucks that the anime did that.
At least they changed the ridiculous name issue in the subs.
