'Best' is relative to what you want/need the video card to do. ATI is just a chip supplier like Nvidia is. ATI got out of the card making business after AMD bought them out.
You'll find passionate supporters for either chipset with plenty of technical comparisons and subjective opinions to support whatever position and at whatever price point. |

One of my favourite tactics for evaluating a card is to give a very heavy weight to very slow running benchmarks, because I figure that these benches tend to be shader heavy.
I bought my Radeon X1900XT (Well, okay, my dad did. I just have part time gaming rights on his box.) mainly because it's Oblivion with HDR scores were much higher than nVidia 7900 series was getting. Turned out to be a good call...when Crysis came out around fourteen months later, the X1900 was able to run it at settings I considered to look good. Based on the benches I've seen, the 7900 wouldn't have pulled it off. (Of course, I made the mistake of buying two months before the launch of the 8800 series. Bad move.) @Vexx: Ah. I do a lot of recommendations to friends/family, but I never actually buy stuff for them. In some situations, I may assemble, but even then they usually have enough knowledge to keep the damn thing running once it's up. Twelve machines sounds hard to keep up with. |

Offtopic: they tell me their budget, I make recommendations (along with look-ahead upgrade planning). I'll order/buy it and they pay me back because otherwise they tend to show up after paying too much or the wrong items. Its actually not that hard - once every quarter or so, I'll do a review and I have everyone's component list on a spreadsheet.
I do need to review the ATI Radeon product line again though...
