5cm/sec is a great drama, realistic, but personally i like series with happy endings (after all, i dont like to invest time spent into a series then wondering WTF happens after)
so, ill def recommend: Kimi Ga Nozuen (very dramatic rollercoaster of 12 solid non-filler eps. almost every scene has a meaning, and there is no wasted dialogue. the english name is "rumbling hearts" and that is exactly how i felt as i spent 5 hrs to go on through it. the ending was realistic and exactly how i wouldve liked it as well) Koi Kaze (wincest, a very beautiful romantic story. u have to suspend ur morality and judgment of the content to fully enjoy the concept of "true love" and how u dont pick who u fall into it with) Clannads (the pinnacle of dramatic romance story. it really is #1) Elfen Lied (inb4 all the haters - this is a very tragic love story and i still rewatch it to this day.) |

I agree with most. Some degree of comedy in animes.
Hana Yori Dango (anime). Crying guaranteed. Much drama, etc etc There's even several 'live action' ones (soaps basically) The live actions have been made by various asian countries: Hana Yori Dango (japanese version is best imho), Boys over Flowers (korean Ver 2nd best)

I'll second Clannad as well, however as previously stated, Afterstory possesses a darker more dramatic theme.
If that seems to peak your interest, there's also Kanon 2006. There is some mild humor in the beginning, but the series is certainly a tearjerker and has a great emotional factor that draws one deep into the intricate story. Romeo x Juliet, an anime adaptation of Shakespeare's tale, this one deals with two individuals from vastly different worlds, brought together by fate. Lastly, but not least, I'll recommend School Days. The series itself is a masterpiece on delivering a deep emotional plot, even taking a further and darker turn than the typical romantic drama.
