Out in the UK today, and I've only watched the first episode so far, but wow!
Remember that old "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0" anime from 2009? Well that looks like a picnic compared to the scenes in the first episode of this. Suspect Enzo's right about it being a dark ride, so I think I'm going to ration myself to one episode a day rather than blaze through it. Between this and Great Pretender (when's that getting out over here?), Netflix have upped their anime game. |

In some ways, this can work as a comedy. First the girl abandoned her team. Then she couldn't eat meat so her dad decided to dig yam for her using the shovel that he was carrying along with a hundred other survival items in his small magical bag. Unfortunately he was digging the wrong spot and got himself blown up (as his hand landed by his wife's side.) But that was no big deal. Next thing the group were all cool about it and rolled along like nothing happened. They have to tread on with the mission of going somewhere. But soon a love triangle surfaced subtly. Ms. Pigtail was being sweet to the only kind of nice looking male in the group which provoked feelings of jealousy in the heart of short hair girl. So she plotted an evil plan and pretended she wanted to take a reak knowing well that Ms. Pigtail would die of some poison gas instantly (as some man suddenly appeared from the sky told them). It was all so nice and convenient. Now there ain't no love triangle no more. And I was about to ship Ms. Pigtail and the only nice looking guy in the group. I'm so sad that my ship sank so quickly like Japan in this show.
I think I'm done. |

I am half-way though and allow me to tell you that Day of Resurrection is a better disaster story than this one. You can watch it on youtube, as its now in public domain for some reason. The female lead of this anime is just unlikeable.

Seen all the episodes. This is undoubtedly a genuinely good anime made with passion.
This is, however, not the best thing ever. It has a number of flaws mostly in the animation department that went downhill since episode 3 onwards. If you absolutely cannot stand the art direction of Devilman Crybaby, you will be struggling through this show. Especially starting from episode 8 where the characters hilariously turned into Ninja Turtles visually . The writing has some real plot-conveniences, but I can let that slide since, at the end of the show, this is a recollection story from someone who was extremely lucky in-universe to have made it so far. All that said, the story is beautiful. The show has heart, and whoever said that there's a petty love-triangle and the MC girl is attempting murder in the story was hugely mistaken or misunderstood the story that's going on (was he drunk when watching the show?). There's no such thing. All characters have both flaws & strong points. They're meant to be more real, not just easily-likable like anime-protags. They all have low & high moments throughout the show. The mother character for example had no time to mourn a certain deceased character to the point where she seemed to be cold-hearted. But that's because they had no time to mourn since they had to keep moving & she had to take care of her children. Later in the story, she finally broke down when they finally able to catch a break. Things like that are falsely-reported by many impatient audience who already made judgement before they even finished the whole story. All in all, this is a very good disaster story like the Hollywood classics Poseidon Adventure & The Towering Inferno. And the comparison with Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is also more-or-less fitting even though Japan is Sinking is on a much bigger scale of disaster. Definitely worth your time if you can appreciate the genre. In case you haven't noticed: I'm glad I watched this.

It's not perfect, there is a fair bit of narm and overuse of that one obvious death flag. But its a show that have a message of resilience and hope against all odds, also a reminder that countries like Japan can go under the wrath and whim of Earth (I think of Italy that have not just Vesuvus, countries in the Pacific Fire Ring or a good chunk of USA with Yellowstone). While the female lead was unlikeable in a tier of the series, she does get better.

Yeah, I liked the show too. It’s isn’t perfect; some of the scenarios seemed too far-fetched and convenient, but I thought the characters really shined here. One of the episodes that stuck to me is when Go and Ayumu was stranded in the boat, Yuasa’s strength was apparent there in portraying small moments of intimacy and interaction. Would have liked the series more had we had more moments like that.

Just finished this, and while it has some great individual moments, it's still hampered by annoying plot contrivances that are typical of the disaster movie genre. A well-written tragedy has to convince the audience that its tragic moments were inevitable, but in this show's case, many were caused by sheer plot-mandated stupidity.

But the anime is not about tragedy. Disaster genre itself is not about tragedy, but about hope, survival and sometimes even adventure/journey to reach safety. Yes, some characters in the party will die or be left out along the way due to their own action (be it self sacrifice, fulfilling their own goal or doing something stupid) which is understandable in their situation. Surely you're not gonna argue that people IRL always act smart under such pressure. Also, even people who act smart can still be taken out by mother nature in the most unexpected way (like what happened to a certain character in the show).
