It would actually be pretty cool if someone was accidentally killed and it lead to real war. I mean really, how far can they go with athletic competitions disguised as mock war plot? It's fun and all but if there's nothing to lose then there's no real tension.

Or maybe I've just become to grimdark lately.

As stated previously, the conflict of the show, at least from what information we have to go on, appears to be for Cinque (thank you, scans) to find a way home. That he has a rival on the Galette side also makes for some tension, because with rivals, there's always the possibility of losing.

Plenty of facets for gravitas and ways for things to go.

Second episode was already much better than first episode
This was not only because it had a little bit of fan service, but also had something happening with actual fighting.

Yet it still had plot holes big as barn doors. The so-called "hero" kid never ever has touched a weapon, and has absolutely zero combat experience whatsoever. Yet right from the very beginning, he instantly fights like a champion

Then Leonmichelle appears and kicks everyone's ass - really loved that
Next, instant-hero and "what, she's a girl" fight Leonmichelle. While I could understand the floppy ear girl being able to hit Leonmichelle (she's head of the guards, after all), instant-hero being not only also able to hit her, but even destroying her armour is yet another serious blunder and totally absurd and outlandish
Well, at least he also destroyed floppy ear girl's clothes, and we get lovely shimapan service

there's been really lot of Cinque and Millhiore. Though when I read the wiki. It looks like Millhiore is older by a year than Cinque. Anyway nice couple indeed. But I want to see more Rebecca. It's rare to know about the girl left behind in the other world in this kind of fantasy settings.

Well Rebecca, his childhood friend did mention that Shinku excels in athletic activities and Bo Staff Techniques Bojutsu [棒]... It's one of the martial arts’ oldest surviving styles... If you had watch Ayako release then they did translate it as Pole Techniques.

The scan says his name is "Cinque", and as it's the only English spelling we've got, best to go with it.

Also, something to note about the show's releases. The first DVD lists three episodes on it instead of two. Though the total number of DVDs hasn't been revealed, that's enough information to say that this will be a two cour show.

Actually no, it's one cour. The official site mentions 6 volumes in total in their page about different store bonuses. The episode allocation is most likely 3-2-2-2-2-2.
