Hinomaru Zumou

Spoiler:

Manga 'Hinomaru Zumou' is getting a TV anime adaptation.

Plot Summary
Quote:
It is a divine ritual, a martial art, a combat sport—it's sumo!!

A "small" new student, Ushio Hinomaru, appears before the weak little sumo club of Oodachi High School! The words "big" and "heavy" are the rules to this sport, which does not fit this newbie any inch, but this guy goes and does what...!? Ushio and the small sumo club climbs its way to the top!

The goal is Hinoshita Kaisan (a title for the highest rank in professional sumo, equivalent of Yokozuna)!

A fired up high school sumo tale—no retakes allowed!!

Seems to cover all of high school (volumes 1 -74). So this will probably at least be 2 cour.

I think you mean volumes 1 - 17, lol, the first part of the manga (high school sumo) covers up to chapter 159, thats worth 4 cours/50+ episodes

How bad is Gonzo's reputation for making anime nowadays?
Because I recall they were quite the flamboyant powerhouse back then (until they went nearly bankrupt); I recall how flashily wonderful their version of Count of Monte Cristo was.

I assume they're softening the manga designs to reel in the female audience; IIRC they're the ones that drive the sales/popularity of most sports themed anime (Haikyuu, Kuroko etc.)

Gankutsuou's visual style wasn't a typical Gonzo thing (aside of the CG mechs I guess), it was more like Maeda Mahiro's vision being brought to life by Gonzo's resources. No other Gonzo show looked anything like it, before or after. Although, I guess no other studio would have - could have - made a show like Gankutsuou.

I don't know about Gonzo today, but back then animation-wise they were mostly about CG and trying to incorporate it into more traditional animation. Most of their original productions had elements of that, sometimes to tolerable levels (Yukikaze looked pretty great in 2002, and even Blue Sub 6 - then again that was in 2000), sometimes less than tolerable levels (oh dear god, Glass Fleet... although with that show the terrible animation was the least of its problems).

Anyway, I quite liked Gonzo - not necessarily their shows (the only Gonzo shows I enjoyed were Gankutsuou, Yukikaze and Blue Sub 6), but I liked their attitude and willingness to experiment, even if the end result was usually pretty bleh. They also actively tried to reach out to foreign audiences with their series of shows based on properties that they hoped would be familiar to Western audiences (The Count of Monte Cristo, Romeo and Juliet, The Seven Samurai, even Glass Fleet was supposed to be based on something but I didn't stick around long enough to find out what) without trying to pander to "what we think western audiences want in an anime" like certain productions do today.

I'd be interested to see what they're up to now... too bad that I'm not interested in sumo whatsoever.

There's no question Gonzo was a trailblazing studio, both for their interest in appealing directly to foreign audiences before it was cool and for incorporating (astonishingly good-looking, for the time) CGI. All evidence points towards them being a shadow of themselves post-bankruptcy, both in terms of production quality and creative ambition. But I'm certainly not going to dismiss this series simply because Gonzo is producing it.

Looks like it's taking over Black Clover's timeslot, assuming it's from the same producer (Avex Pictures) that is.

The designs dont look that bad, they resemble the manga artstyle quite a bit, Ill keep some hope up until we see the animation on action
