He wasn't stupid. He knew his decisions bit him back in the ass more often than not and he was completely fine with it and took it without any complaints. If his choices ended up backfiring on him then he would take it in stride; he had no one to blame but himself for his mistakes and he could take solace in that.
"Talk like that and you're gonna lose your life before you know it," Karon replied, smiling underneath the pink scarf she wore, "If you have enough energy to curse at things you can't control then use that strength to keep walking forward."
But it was completely something else when someone else caused him trouble. Karon thought it would be a great idea to go skiing on one of the higher slopes because there were less people around, apparently content to ignore Irish's warnings that going to an abandoned part of the lodge they were staying at wasn't such a good idea.
And now they were here, lost with no idea where they were and being rained on by snow coming from an unexpected storm that had him. And that wasn't even mentioning the fact that they couldn't see more than few feet in front of them because of the loss of sunlight. They were screwed.
"And whose fault do you think this is?" Irish bit back angrily, "It was your idea to go to an abandoned place and now we're stuck here with no help, no light, and most importantly no heat!" He closed his eyes and sneezed as another burst of cold shot through. He was an idiot for not bringing the suit along.
"Well I didn't hear you complaining on the way here," Karon shrugged nonchalantly, "And besides, don't you think its more romantic when its just the two of us?" She smiled cheekily and Irish looked away, pale cheeks reddening, "If you didn't want to go then you should have said so."
There she went again. She had a tendency to be overtly friendly and joke about romance, something her teacher/big brother figure/probable secret lover was also a victim of. Irish didn't like saying it aloud, but he did consider her a friend and, while she would never hear this while he was alive, he was glad for her company. "That's because you tied this scarf around me like a gag before I had a chance," He fired off again, "Don't you have your IS? You could call those idol friends of yours and they can come get you. They may hate me but they should at least be willing to save you."
Karon chewed on her lower lip nervously. Irish and her friends didn't exactly see eye to eye and it wasn't just because he was shorter than a lot of them. Still, she doubted that any of them actually hated him.....well, maybe Riselle did, but Riselle acted so tsundere a lot of the time that it was hard to tell.
"I didn't bring my IS with me," She chose to ignore the irritated expression he tossed her, "Besides, I wouldn't leave you here by yourself. I'd never be able to live with myself.
"Shame. If I was going to die then I'd hoped I would do it with some relative peace and quiet," Despite the harsh words, she could tell he was joking. From an outsiders point of view he sounded completely serious, but she knew him well enough that knew it was just a joke.....for the most part.
"Come on, lets keep moving," She wiped some snow off his jacket and pulled down his ski hat playfully, "I think I see a house ahead. Anything's better than this snow."
"What is this place?" Irish looked around the small wooden cottage carefully. It was small, less than the bedrooms in ISA, and there were useless things lining the wall and floor: Newspapers, boxes, old television sets and various other knick knacks. If it weren't for its location he would have considered it a garbage dump.
"It's dark in here. Is this place abandoned?" She removed the white gloves on her hands and breathed into the bare skin, "But in any case, we were lucky enough to find this place...."
Karon looked around the area carefully before taking on an uncomfortable expression. Irish rolled his eyes and sighed, "Don't tell me you're scared of this place. I've seen you fight criminals on T.V as a publicity stunt."
"You were nearly one of them, Mr. 'I hate all IS'," She giggled as Irish rolled his eyes again, "I just feel like this place where something might jump out at us."
"Well, if something did come out I'm sure you'll take care of it," He knelt down and began gathering some of the old newspapers. He had spotted a Hearth in the middle of the room and a fire was exactly what they both needed to avoid freezing to death. Cellphones would've also been good, but she'd forgotten hers at the lodge and he was still technically banned from using one due to that little incident with hacking into the school mainframe.
"What are you doing?"
"Making a fire," He searched around the area again before pointing at the shelf adjacent to him, "I saw some matches over there. Can you get them? The blizzard's not letting up and we could be stuck here all night, which means we're going to fall asleep no matter what. We need a source of heat."
Karon nodded and, a few minutes later, the unlikely pair found themselves staring at the hearth as it produced a small flame. It wasn't the best source of heat and they still felt like they were wrapped in a blanket of ice, but at least they weren't going to freeze to death.
"It's still cold," Irish complained.
Karon looked at his irritated expression briefly before a mischievous smile took over her lips, "Hey, Irish...we could try something," He looked at her and raised an eyebrow curiously, "You know, like what people do on TV people are trapped in the cold?" She started.
"I don't watch TV," He answered back flatly, "Just tell me what it is."
"You know....use each others body heat to stay warm..."
His reaction was instantaneous. His normally white face turned cherry red from top to bottom and looked away from her. Karon giggled at the response; even his ears were red.
"Sorry, I was just kidding. We should-"
"...Alright."
"Huh?" She blinked. Did she just hear something impossible?
"I said alright!" Irish replied irritably, face turning an ever deeper shade of red, "The alternative is freezing to death and I've already gotten used to your physical presence that I can ignore the violent reactions normally associated with making contact with those of the opposite gender." He took a deep breath, "But we should limit ourselves to sitting down next to one another."
He was using big and complicated words now. It was always a sign that he was nervous.
Slowly, Karon scooted to his position till they were sitting shoulder to shoulder. Irish's left arm quivered slightly as her jacketed arm made contact with it before settling down peacefully. She hesitated slightly before laying her head down on his shoulder. Irish didn't say anything
"You know, despite everything, this has been fun," She started.
"Fun? I question your mindset if you think being lost in a snowstorm is fun," Irish scoffed, "This reminds me of the cold winters in Europe. We would find abandoned buildings and try to start fires in order to stay warm. When I was younger, Joshua was the only one who helped me. All the others told me that I needed to learn for myself."
"To a child? How horrible," She frowned.
"It was sensible," He answered, "I can make my own fire now and it means we won't freeze to death now. I'd say it was a lesson taught well."
"You can be so hard headed, you know that?" She sighed, "The others must be worried about us. They're probably searching for us right now. We're going to be in so much trouble when we get back."
"Worried about you, you mean," Irish corrected, "You're an Idol - though I still don't understand why the Japanese place so much importance in that - and you're an IS representative. I'm a criminal working off his sentence: A dog with a leash. They could care less about what happens to me."
"Oh will you stop it with-" Karon raised her head to complain before stopping. Irish had evidently expected her to argue and turned to face her as well. In the end, they had severely underestimated the distance of their heads.
Irish wondered briefly on the odd sensation on his lips before he realized it. He was kissing her, and by complete accident at that. Red engulfed his face again and, if one looked closely enough, it was almost as if steam coming out of his ears.
They had broken off quickly. It was their first kiss; both of them. Karon thought her first would be more romantic and drawn out, probably with something exciting like fireworks happening in the background. The kiss, if she could even call it that, was quick and she barely felt it before Irish had broken away.
Karon wanted to say something, anything really. She was always the one with the joke and quip and he was always the one to make barbed remarks and deadpan snarks. But now her mind was a blank, a complete empty mess.
She leaned against him, putting her head on his shoulder nervously. She was honestly expecting him to shake her off and tell her to stay away from him. She wouldn't say anything against him if he did.
Wordlessly, Irish looked at her quickly before placing his arm around her waist and pulling her closer. She looked up at him briefly in surprise before smiling and snuggling closer to him. She could feel his warmth. Neither of them could find the words to say right now, but it didn't matter. They didn't need to say anything.
Neither of them felt cold anymore.
Hah, just not used to romance anymore:/ I prefer plot and dark with lots of gray morality. RomCom feels stiff. And Irish felt more like the girl in this scenario....God that sounded sexist.

features were distinctly asian, yet her hair was almost cream-grey in
color, tied in a pair of short pigtails that made her look even younger.

Wordlessly, Irish looked at her quickly before placing his arm around her waist and pulling her closer. She looked up at him briefly in surprise before smiling and snuggling closer to him. She could feel his warmth. Neither of them could find the words to say right now, but it didn't matter. They didn't need to say anything.
Neither of them felt cold anymore.

2.) She's actually the right type of character (Shy Female genius) for this genre
3.) If the events of Sky Girls didn't happen (This IS the IS universe, after all), it makes sense that she'd be one of the top people in the field of exoskeletal systems--EG IS systems.
