You may wish to set "gui.show_plus_sell" to false as well.

Did you mean "gui.show_plus_upsell"? Because that's the closest match I could
find for that.

That's the one, looks like I mistyped it.

You also have to be careful during the install IIRC. There is a page that looks like your typical EULA where people just click "accept" as fast as they can but you have to click "decline" because it's actually adware in disguise.

Torch browser

No one mentioned it here, so I feel obligated to do so...I'm using the Torch browser's torrent client.
The browser is chromium-based so you can install the adblock plugin in order to get rid of the annoying ads.
As to operating systems, I've always used it on my windows 7 pc, but I heard that it's been released for mac as well.

I've been using qbittorrent lately and I'm pretty satisfied so far.
It's free, add free, light, simple.

Decided to bump this thread for the same question rather than eat up site memory with a whole new thread. So what's a good, free torrent program now?

qBittorent is definitely a good client, but just to give you another option to consider, Deluge might be worth a look as well.

Thanks for the replies. And I'm surprised nobody poked at "Wondows."

For the Linux users among us, I prefer Transmission over Deluge and KTorrent. It's fast, unobtrusive, and gets the job done.

I actually use the cli version of Transmission on my Linux computer, but I'm backwards like that.

Deluge works for me, haven't had any issues. KTorrent, on the other hand...

Hey, I've compiled and run Enhanced CTorrent on a server to which I had only SSH access once in a while, too. Now that's old school! Source Code

Works great, by the way, as a command-line BitTorrent client.

I'm surprised no one has even mentioned Vuze? A lot of programs suggested were ones I'd never have heard of yet no one recommended Vuze ..

Azureus back in the day was pretty shite as it was pretty heavy but Vuze is pretty gud these days, and the only program I use. Alternative to Vuze would be Leap, which is really lightweight version of Vuze,

Ew... C++. *hiss*

The only reason I'm not using btpd is because a certain otaku torrenting site doesn't have it whitelisted. Enhanced Ctorrent is, though. Curious. I was actually using rtorrent there for a while, but then one day it just broke and I couldn't get it working without trying to uninstall and reinstall, and if I'm at the point of installing something I'll just switch to something else that might not give me the same problems in a few days anyway.

I thought about Vuze, but I didn't recommend it because not everyone has or wants to install Java on their computer.

I stopped using Azureus because of its dependence on Java. I prefer something that runs in machine code.

Don't remember the exact reasons anymore but Vuze/Azureus highly strained my computer, so I switched to utorrent which is much lighter on my system. Might give qbittorrent a look though.
