You know it's a big one when they skip the Opening
![]() Time for Shirogane origins! At first he felt like a poor fit for Shuchiin, feeling out of sorts amidst all the pure-blooded and prestigious rich kids who didn't have the time for him, and he definitely didn't see himself as a student council president...until he met one and found a reason to strive for that title ![]() Nobunaga Shimazaki as the former student council president!? I didn't expect to see him here. He seems like a pretty jovial, earnest, sort who genuinely saw something in Shirogane that would be a good fit for Shuchiin, and pushing Shirogane to be the person he needed to be ![]() Loose hair, ice princess, Kaguya! It's kind of funny how Kaguya being so epically heroic and saving someone (what's hotter, hero Kaguya or wet Kaguya? Or both) for her own purposes because she saw the benefits of that person's standing for the Shinomiya Group ended up making Shirogane fall for her and become the kind of person she didn't expect to ever get along with but ended up falling for herself. Heck, Shirogane became the student council president partially to become worthy of her ![]() Taisho Maid Kaguya! Gotta love cosplay cafe's (and of course they're popular with the guys). And Hayasaka gets to finally play herself in public ![]() Ramen Kings', more like tea and serving kings! They're not about to let Kaguya get away with shoddy service, comparing her poor pouring to Hayasaka's grace and excellence, but Kaguya isn't about to be beaten by Hayasaka. Maybe she can't properly prepare coffee, but she can definitely pour tea...even if it basically exposes her that she prepared so well for one person in particular ![]() Ishigami is trying to get ready to ask Tsubame out but he still has cold feet, luckily Miss Mood Swings AKA Maki is there to push him on and take a chance, especially so he doesn't end up like her and have to vicariously live through others' more successful relationships while the guy she likes and her best friend keep flexing their relationship in front of her. Classic Maki suffering ![]() Hey, Ishigami actually did it! He asked her out! Of course first it looks like both Kaguya and Maki need to survive the 1st years' haunted house before we can get some alone time for Ishigami and Tsubame ![]()

Definitely an episode that is pushing everything forward a bit more. Not the big moments yet, but building up to it.
Miyuki's mindset makes sense to start. He only went to that school because of how good it is to scholarship students. But actually trying to make his way through it was rough. He owes a lot to that Student Council President. A good push in the right direction led to encounters that absolutely shaped his life. Miyuki wouldn't be the guy he is today without what happened here. Even if Kaguya's actions were calculated, the fact remains that she did take action. She was the only person prepared to do something and then she acted on it. No wonder Miyuki fell for her immediately. And that itself led to his whole path changing. First aiming to become the student council president to be worthy to stand beside her, and now he's even looking to go to school outside of Japan! So much good stuff though. Hayasaka utterly got to roast the heck out of Kaguya in this one. Both by freaking her out via acting as herself and then the coffee making scene. Fair enough that Kaguya isn't experienced in making coffee...but not sure anyone else going to that class is going there for the masterful coffee making. Good on Kaguya for putting in her effort in tea. But unfortunately that just caused her even more embarrassment. Darn it universe. Give poor Maki a break! Come on! There's no hope in getting the guy she wants, but could at least let her move on. Even the mild and frightening jealousy from her friend hardly evens things out there. Good for Ishigami though. He did ask out the girl he likes. Sure she isn't likely seeing it as anything romantic, but at least he's taken the right step forward. Now he's got plenty of chances to take his shot at this.

I'm happy for my boy Ishigami, he deserves a chance with any girl except Kaguya.
For me it seems Nagisa is a genuinely a bad person, like she knows Maki likes her boyfriend and she drags her on purpose to spend time with both of them to make her suffer, and there is what Ishigami said and that rare scene were they were talking, I didn't understand that. I don't make excuses for Maki since what she wants to do and steal her boyfriends is shitty but I don't see any good qualities on Nagisa. |

Osaragi is surprisingly effective at horror! Add on to that some clever 3D Binaural horror sounds and you've got an effective haunted house
![]() The only thing that can bring Kaguya and Maki together is being scared out of their minds ![]() "Honestly, we're screwed." I appreciate that blunt honesty ![]() Who knew Iino's love of ikemen praise would end up saving her class's haunted house? Even if it lead to some mental torture as Kozuke Makihara has her way with Iino's ears and does every thing she can think of...she even uses Iino's love of Fujiwara against her (Fujiwara with the top 10 anime betrayal). But at least they figured out how to make it work for the retake even if they had to tape poor Iino's mouth shut ![]() To the surprise of no one, you put two lovebirds who are all over each other in a locker, and they use that as an opportunity to make out behind closed doors. Too bad that ended up screwing over Ishigami's plans with Tsubame thanks to Iino's strict enforcement of no intimate relations. Poor Ishigami-kun ![]() So Moeha takes after her big sister in terms of being in the student council, but she definitely differs from Chika in terms of her feelings for Shirogane...she has a crush on him! And Fujiwara is utterly devastated to realize who her little sister has feelings for and can't help herself because every bad point she points out about him turns out to be something she's helped him improve on. Fujiwara's just playing herself ![]() Even when she tries to sabotage him she ends up just helping Shirogane show off the stuff he's actually good at, including being a great juggler since it runs in the family. Fujiwara having a mental breakdown was perfect ![]() And just when Kaguya discovers Moeha's feelings for Shirogane and is considering cursing the entire tainted Fujiwara bloodline...instead the two just gush about how great Shirogane is, because sometimes it's just nice to have someone who likes the same things you do ![]() Ishigami was able to salvage his date with Tsubame by going to her class and using his proficiency with games to win a heart-shaped cookie he gives to her...basically publicly confessing to her in front of her entire class. And Tsubame finally gets flustered and has to run right out of there, which is adorable ![]() I love how Shirogane is worried that Ishigami getting rejected might ruin his chances of confessing to Kaguya but still imagines himself and Kaguya being there to help comfort Ishigami because they all care about him ![]() Fujiwara is viciously savage, especially to Ishigami, but she still cares about them even if she's very practical and blunt about what she feels is lacking in the student council boys...but she still thinks they're decent guys deep down ![]() Who stole the heart-shaped balloons!? And to the surprise of no one, Karen's first suspect is the tabletop board game club ![]()

The adaptation is making weird choices, skipping chapters that are extremely important for the main characters (and no, they can't go back to those chapters) and keeping ones focused on completely irrelevant characters like Moeha. I guess they're trying to strike a balance between the romance and the comedy. A balance the manga eventually completely lost.

Ishigami pulling out his A game to win that cookie

Man...Iino went through it in this episode. Not only did she have to go through all of that several times with people watching, but the last one she was blindfolded, tied up, and gagged! She's going to have absolute nightmares. It was way too much fun and I appreciate them going all out for it. But it was still quite an ordeal.
Poor Chika. Any time she wants Miyuki to be bad at something...it's not happening ![]() ![]() Ishigami...what a guy. He manages to confess without realizing he confessed and yet his plan was to confess during this festival. Mission accomplished without even realizing it! And it seems like his odds are pretty good.

I'm surprised at the lack of discussion about the ending song. The ending is very much influenced by Starship Troopers. However, I couldn't get the rest of the references. Some of those references were definitely things I have seen in the past, but I can't remember what they are from.
It did sort of remind me of Macross II. Hayasaka spinning around smiling is extremely familiar, but I just can't remember what the reference is.

Kaguya's sure got it bad (when doesn't she?) if she's imagining herself getting sucked into a paper by Shirogane so they can become the news' hottest couple
![]() There's a Phantom Thief on the loose, and the only one who can catch them is detective Fujiwara! Also, Shirogane with the masterfully made balloons ![]() Maki and Kaguya are just too tsundere to be honest with each other, luckily Kashiwagi is there to be the only sane woman and play wingwoman...of course she also enjoys the show of Kaguya's romcom antics ![]() Shirogane and Kashiwagi got Kaguya good with that heart-shaped balloon! It's just too bad in true Kaguya fashion she tried to briber her way out before running off rather than exchange her own heart for Shirogane's. Can't give the game away that early ![]() Tsubame can't handle being around Ishigami and she stumbles into needing advice from Kaguya. It's not that she dislikes Ishigami, but she's never seen him as a romantic interest and she focuses so much on her significant others that she's worried she'll slack off in gymnastics and in her college prep. Some pretty reasonable issues going into her addressing Ishigami's (unintentional) confession ![]() And of course Kaguya, being Kaguya, completely misreads the situation and tells her to just go all savage in rejection...and then she finds out it was Ishigami and she's realizing just how much she screwed up and how screwed up the situation is. And it's her own fault for pushing Ishigami to confess even though he didn't even intentionally do it ![]() Oh hey, even Fujiwara's getting confessed too! But in true Fujiwara fashion she turns her rejection into a quiz and a poetic declaration that she's too free to be tied down. At least the guy was left happy ![]() Iino getting hit on and actually agreeing to go with the guys...yeah, Ishigami was right to be worried about her. But he was still there to protect her! And Tsubame seeing a new side of him leads her to decide to get to better know him before she responds to his confession, which is pretty reasonable ![]() Shirogane dropping all airs and just outright asking Kaguya out on a festival date for all to see...you gotta love it. And then a fortune teller prone to sexual harassment and surprisingly intimate knowledge of the people she reads says they're super compatible, Kaguya will be great in bed with some good sex ed, and that one way or another this will be a fateful day for their relationship ![]() For once no one in the supporting cast is going to get in the way of Shirogane and Kaguya's alone time...Fujiwara is too busy playing detective, Tsubame has Ishigami, and Iino has to eat. Also, here's idol Hayasaka for good measure ![]() Kaguya is going on cloud 9 and everything seems to be going well...until Shirogane finally reveals to her that he's going to Stanford and basically leaving her. Uh oh ![]()
