Ohhh, if we're going to play that way, I damn expect women's wrestling and judo anime no later than 2020 since that's where the Japanese women excelled!
Though it is freakin' bizarre no one has done a girls' gymnastic anime show at this day in age; it a tasteful fanservice opportunity!

Trying to think of an anime/manga for every sport featured...
Aquatics - Diving: ? - Swimming: Free - Synchronized Swimming: ? - Water Polo: ? Archery: Lots of shows with scenes of characters doing archery, but I can't think of one about archery. Athletics: Battle Athletes? (various sports, but athletics is the centrepiece) Badminton: ? Baseball/Softball: Nope, absolutely no anime about these. What a ridiculous idea. [/sarcasm] Basketball: Slam Dunk Boxing: Hajime no Ippo Canoeing: ? Cycling: Yowamushi Pedal Equestrian: There would have to be a shoujo manga about this made at some point. Fencing: Utena? Field Hockey: Can't think of one, but the girl in SKET Dance used a hockey stick as a weapon. Golf: I vaguely recall seeing a golf manga in Shonen Jump years ago, but can't remember the title. Gymnastics: Again, lots of characters that do gymnastics, but I can't think of a show about gymnastics. Handball: ? Judo: Yawara Karate: Can't think of one, but there HAS to be an anime/manga specifically about karate (as opposed to martial arts in general) Modern Pentathlon: ? Rowing: ? Rugby Sevens: That episode of Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu? I recall seeing something on ANN about an upcoming rugby anime. Sailing: Shooting: ? (what was the title of the one about airsoft guns a couple of years ago?) Skateboarding: ? Sport Climbing: ? Surfing: ? Table Tennis: I think there have been a couple of table tennis anime Taekwondo: (Or, as they call it in Japan, "That garbage martial art from Korea") Tennis: Aim for the Ace! (and some others) Triathlon: ? Volleyball: Attack #1 (classic) or Haikyuu! (modern) Weightlifting: ? Wrestling: All the wrestling anime I can think of have been about pro wrestling, not amateur wrestling. |

Yet the only manga I could find was an ecchi piece where a young woman agrees to wear panty-revealing outfits to secure financing for her progress up the professional ranks. There could be more compelling works that follow the normal "levelling-up" path of other sports stories. You could also have team competitions that pit Japanese players against the Koreans and Chinese, opening up the possibility of nationalistic themes like the international contests near the end of Hikaru no Go. And, of course, there would be possibility for yuri subtexts as well.

That was a very nice presentation video. Love it.
I'm all for Hello Kitty being the mascot, but I would enjoy it more if Hatsune Miku takes an active part in the opening ceremony as a singing voice alongside other real singers who might get the call on that day. |

Set A, the blue/pink, won with 109,041 votes. Set B, the fox/komainu, got 61,423 votes. Set C, the fox/tanuki, only got 35,291 votes. https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2...ng-design.html According to netizens tracking the voting process from Japan, schoolchildren liked A as it was modern and futuristic. The pink mascot was also reported to liked by schoolgirls because of its feminine look. A was also the lead choice of the younger age groups, although B was a favourite too for being Japanese in look. Social media + oldies gravitated to C, although there was uncertainty whether C winning unofficial Twitter polls was due to mob/mentality/shitposting at work. https://www.gamesbids.com/forums/top...ascots/?page=5 |

The first show with an Olympics theme doesn't concern any of the sports in Laevatein's post, but it certainly is not a surprising choice for anime.
It's about ... wait for it ... beach volleyball. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...ashita/.126838 Japan hasn't fared very well in this sport in past Olympics, and no Japanese pair appears in the top-fifteen teams of either gender at http://www.fivb.org/EN/Beachvolleyball/.

Naomi Osaka just won the women's final of the US Open against Serena Williams. I know that women's tennis has been depicted in Baby Steps through a number of matches involving Natsu Takasaki, but I hope we will either see a little more of women's tennis.
