Mahjong arcade game

There is an article about the Saki mahjong arcade game (Sega MJ4 Ver. C) on gigazine, with screenshots and some videos (the audio quality of the videos is bad, sadly).

ETA: english translation.

The hand of the day: The mahjong equivalent of the straight flush:

What's happening there: We got 1 yaku's for getting only tiles from one suit + honors (the 3 red tiles and the 2 black tiles that are on the far right of the hand are known as honors, along with other tiles). 1 yaku for having a melded pon(3 tiles) of dragons (the 3 red tiles on the lower right part of the screen. Yes, it has more than one name) 1 yaku for getting a 1-9 combination of tiles of the same hand(straight flush ), + zero dora (you will hear this a lot, it means something like extra points for having a particular kind of tile that makes your hand worth more. In this hand I had none of those) = 4 fans

Rough calculation of the points:
fu x 2^(2+fan's)

Calculating the fu's is another thing altogether, so for now let's trust the computer calculated value, and we got 30 fu's, and 4 han's as described above. so 30 x 2^6 = 1920. Since I was the dealer, everyone pays me double. so it goes to 3840. Rounded up, 3900 per player

Since the later part of the series will involve a lot of matches, winning, losing, scoring, and the such, getting perspective of what is big, what is small might give people a better idea of what's happening. This hand could be considered something like middle-higher tier. Nothing specially gigantic like the 30000-40000 points hands showed earlier, but it is a hand that you get more oftenly, and anything over 10000 is already a respectable quantity of points.

No, that's slightly wrong.

You got
1 yaku for a pure straight (123, 456, 789)
1 yaku for a pung of dragons
2 yaku for a half flush (one suit including winds/dragons)

For a total of 4 yaku + zero dora = 4 fan.

Tsumo only is a yaku if you have a concealed hand (menzen tsumo).

I've seen a fair bit of hate for this show so far. I don't really think it's justified either. Nobody was expecting amazing things from this, just a bit of light-hearted fun. I think most people don't seem to realise how tongue in cheek the whole "lightning eye!" bits are. The manga ,and thus the show, know they're being ridiculous. It's best to just go with it I think.

^ @ lotus7: lol your avy always cracks me up when i see it.

i really want to see saki become a tactician or someone who purosely misleads the opponents some time. it worked well with akagi so it should be as good with saki, although it does seem out of character for her atm .

P.S. your hand is 30 fu (minipoints) because it's

20 - for winning with an open hand
2 - for having an edge wait/closed wait/pair wait. (in this case, closed wait)
4 - for a pung of honors
2 - selfdraw (tsumo)

28 rounded up = 30.

I'm beginning to think I should print out this entire thread and stuff it in a looseleaf binder as "tips, trivia, and apocrypha on mahjongg"...

When Koromo starts doing her thing I'm probably going to be requesting an avatar of her. I don't normal use avatars from currently running series, but as people can probably see I've decided to make an exception this season.

There's no way to get a nine gates and an all green hand at the same time is it? I mean, by it's nature an all green hand only allows you to have a bamboo's 2,3,4,6,8 in your hand.... (+ green dragon, but you can't have honor titles in a 9 gates hand).

That said, for the people discussing the manga we got a Saki manga thread in the corresponding forum

There are some character sketches (look back in this thread or in the official blog http://www.saki-anime.com/blog/), two official wallpapers at http://www.square-enix.co.jp/magazine/yg/download/ and a some images from the manga and from magazines on imageboards (mostly NSFW sites).
