Unmasking the RQ-180:

"The Air Force has long debated how to conduct penetrating intelligence, surveillance
and reconnaissance missions since the venerable, high-speed SR-71 retired in 1998. But
despite the need and a lingering requirement, no visible progress toward that goal was
made. That’s because the highly classified aircraft – the RQ-180 – has been developed
by Northrop Grumman in secret."

========================================

Secret New UAS Shows Stealth, Efficiency Advances:

"A large, classified unmanned aircraft developed by Northrop Grumman is now flying—
and it demonstrates a major advance in combining stealth and aerodynamic efficiency.
Defense and intelligence officials say the secret unmanned aerial system (UAS),
designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, is scheduled
to enter production for the U.S. Air Force and could be operational by 2015."

========================================

Where Does RQ-180 Fit In Stealthy UAS History?:

"Defense and intelligence sources say the Sentinel was the result of a quick-reaction
project designed for specific missions, and not with an eye toward an enduring presence
in the fleet. That position was reserved for a new, secret UAS—Northrop Grumman’s
stealthy RQ-180."

^ Clearly still too much money to throw at such useless projects. The big conflicts where it would be useful are fought with nukes (endresult doesnt matter - there is no winner).
The smaller conflicts (e.g. middle east) are defined by the efficient deployment of the Global Hawk drone, which is in every aspect (logistics, unit cost, fuel cost...) cheaper than the RQ-180. (saves some jobs I guess)

Or they could just put Skynet AI into the cockpit of their old planes for cost savings.

But they do need job creation right?

FBI can secretly turn on laptop cameras without the indicator light:

"Scary. Insane. Ridiculous. Invasive. Wrong. The Washington Post reports that the FBI has
had the ability to secretly activate a computer's camera "without triggering the light that lets
users know it is recording" for years now. What in the hell is going on? What kind of world do
we live in?

Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of the FBI's Operational Technology Division,
told the Post that that sort of creepy spy laptop recording is "mainly" used in terrorism cases
or the "most serious" of criminal investigations. That doesn't really make it less crazy (or any
better) since the very idea of the FBI being able to watch you through your computer is
absolutely disturbing."

I think that's bullshit. The green led is hard-wired to the camera being in use. It's not a software switch that can be hacked into.

Criminals have been accessing the webcam of laptops for quite some time. Not sure about led on the cam though. (I pasted a piece of paper over the lens of my laptop's webcam, problem solved.)

While I actually no longer drink coffee, I'm still quite fond of it, and so found this article interesting, especially since it has implications beyond coffee:

[Quartz] An army of robot baristas could mean the end of Starbucks as we know it

Automatisation of our world doesn't have enough spotlight, while it's probably the most serious question in our society.

In twenty, maybe thirty years in the future, all the supermarkets could possibily be computerized, as many labor jobs that people with few/no qualifications have. The consequences in term of employement will be huge.

Hopefully that's exactly why most scientists strive for, technology and progress have been since the moment we human began doing it, a way to reduce to weight of work and the possibility of suppressing the very notion of work may be possible in the next century, capitalism or communism were two ideologies meant to give the researchers the opportunities to do their job.

But how will we manage millions of people being unemployed simply because robots or computer can do way better ? I truly believe we are now at a crossroad in how our society will evolve.

I love how they called out the fact that someone made a typo when recording an email address.

Darpa’s Giant Folding Spy Satellite Will Dwarf All Other
Space Telescopes:

"Darpa, the military’s futuristic research agency, says it has
plans to “break the glass ceiling” of space telescopes by
shooting a new design into orbit that’s made of plastic and
unfolds into a mammoth satellite that would dwarf the world’s
most famous telescopes.

Darpa’s Membrane Optical Imager for Real-Time Exploitation
(MOIRE) program redesigns the traditional glass telescope into
an orbital telescope that’s bigger and lighter than previous
imaging satellites, making it easier to spy on larger areas and
for longer periods of time.

Launched as a tightly packed cluster of petals 20 feet in
diameter, MOIRE stretches to 68 feet across once it reaches
22,000 miles above the earth. From orbit, MOIRE could view
approximately 40 percent of the earth’s surface at once while
recording high resolution images and video, making it the
ultimate spying satellite (Darpa notes that it could also be
beneficial in weather forecasting and disaster response)."

How useful would something like this be for astronomy?

The banking sector and other such non-real value generating operations will take care of that. Or we could develop a more inefficient and complex bureaucracy. There is always a means to keep people busy - while making them feel important.

[ScienceDaily] Vast Freshwater Reserves Found Beneath The Oceans

The water, which could perhaps be used to eke out supplies to the world's burgeoning coastal cities, has been located off Australia, China, North America and South Africa.

"The volume of this water resource is a hundred times greater than the amount we've extracted from the Earth's sub-surface in the past century since 1900," says lead author Dr Vincent Post (pictured) of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) and the School of the Environment at Flinders University.
