In case of Denpa Onna, Makoto is very ordinary compare to side female characters, so he faces two situations most of the time; 1. pwned by other characters and suffers from their weird antics 2. evaporates from story and becomes tsukomi.

Actually, that's the first time I've equated the definition of 'sei' as young with its colour. I never thought of it as linked, since they mean entirely different things in different contexts.
I guess 'tis like 'getsu'. where the month is equated with the moon. Teiuka, all this stems from Chinese roots. |

The Work It irritates me when people approach this show with a simplistic mindset: "There's MOE" - "Therefore CRAP" - "Therefore NO PLOT." It's just unfair to brand a show as "CRAP" before even seeing it. (Note: "looking" is different from "seeing") The Studio - Shaft Two points. Point one. A fisherman once said "No skill in the world will make the fish bite." Shaft made this show, if it didn't work for you, well that's that. Next season. Point two. If you eat lobster every day, eventually you're gonna puke. Trust me. Take that however you will. The Author. The author did say that that Nisio Isin is an influence. But for people to expect him to be the 2nd Nisio Isin style-wise? I'd say no artist would like that. I believe Hitoma Iruma would like to be recognized as Hitoma Iruma and NOT as an fake Nisio Isin.

I wonder where the mindset that moe = crap came from.
It's just aimed at a different audience, the moe-ota. The fact that heavy amounts of moe will nearly always detract from the point is nearly completely irrelevant, as moe-blobs are meant to be watched by those who love moe. Aside from that, rather than blaming SHAFT for your personal dislike, you should blame the source material. SHAFT, as a studio, is doing a good job animating it. Your own dislike stems from the moe-blob that the source material is, rather than their alleged horrible animation. |

Obviously, there are people who just try to be intelligence. They fear that their image will be ruined if they like series which doesn't plot driven. They will have many many requirements (even if it looks stupid at times) so that it doesn't look like they like it easily (I'm high class you know!?!) and also to show that their reasons are valid when they like it. Most of them would act like a veteran and try to show off that "I've watched many more series than you do" But as much as veteran as they claim to be, it's a pity that they don't know the meaning of entertainment and personal taste.

@Malkuth -- I think people talk about "Shaft" too much, when they are really referring to Shinbou's work or style. But I'm not in their meetings, so I don't know if he really has the overwhelming influence it looks to me that he does. @Silverwyrm -- As for 靑一點, doesn't it refer to the "adolescence points" that Makoto keeps talking about? "One adolescence point." So 靑 sei is short for 靑春 seishun "adolescence," as in the title of the show: "Crazy Girl and Adolescent Boy." (Or "young boy," "young man.") And 靑 is another way of writing 青, as applejuice said.

Spoiler for length:
Follow up to my post. People who complain that Denpa Onna has no plot either haven't been watching or are downright naive. By naive I refer to people who don't understand subtlety. Most are familiar with shows that have an overt plot. That's the stuff shounen stuff are made of. You can pretty much tell what its about from Episode 1. Setting. Main character. Ability. Villain. Not saying that this is bad. It just that it does has its share of weaknesses. For one, its plain. Well, that could be a good thing. But in a good number of times, change is in order. This could be done using plot twists or plot shifts. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. In contrast, Denpa Onna's plot, especially for WESTERN viewers (see conclusion of this post) is subtle. It doesn't tell you the story right away in Episode 1. Rather, it's slow, smooth AND developing. To make my point, let's look at the Erio-Meme relationship. Episode 1 we have Meme loosing it and going MMA on Erio. Relationship is almost hostile/apathetic. But in Episode 5, we now have Erio calling Meme MOM. They even had more mother-daughter bonding moments. This development is subtle and it worked. It wasn't a one-episode thing. It wasn't overly dramatic. It wasn't drawn out. And it integrates well with the over-all plot of the show. What is the over-all plot of the show? Well, it's right freaking there in the title: Crazy Woman and Adolescent Man. It's a coming-of-age story. That's how I see it. Thank you. (Another illustration about subtlety, though I'd hate to make this comparison, when you watched episode 1-2 of Bakemonogatari, were you able to gauge what type of anime it was?)

I think there's been an expectation train wreck for some people (e.g. Syn's frustration). I also think the "apologists" need to do their research better rather than just insult those people. Use Kaoru Chujo's example as how to do it, please.
I'm enjoying the series for the wacky and the cute ... but I also see where Syn's frustration comes from as story events seem to be vectoring towards some explanation but then it never (hasn't been yet) is given. Also, SHAFT or Shinbou isn't purely known for this kind of stuff (coughs and points to works like Tsukuyomi Moon Phase). Madoka may have been a "one-off" rather than a "sea-change" for SHAFT, but its impossible to assert either assessment until they roll out a few more series.
