Spoiler for Ninety Hours to Cajah's Mountain: part one:

The cold rain pelted the grimacing men as they strained together to pull the box from the raging waters. Their rain slickers did little to keep the foul mixture of fresh rainwater and the splashes of the rumbling Atlantic Ocean out of their fleece garments under the thick rain gear.

“One more pull!” commanded the older man through clenched teeth over the din of howling wind and the roar of the overtaxed boat engine.

The younger man with the stoic face nodded seriously and gripped the thick ropes as the other man braced himself by planting one of his boots against the side of the boat.

“Now!”

The two men leaned back and pulled with all their might as the boat tipped from left to right as wave after wave broke over the low sides. The older man slipped as the boat pitched hard starboard, and the large wooden crate smashed onto him as the younger man finally pulled the trap over the side.

“Ok, Zest?” the younger man with olive skin asked as he pulled the other man to his feet, but he could tell by the gash in the grizzled man’s glove that Zest needed to get below the deck.

“Only snagged my damn hand,” Zest replied in annoyance as his examined his now worthless glove. The knowledgeable eyes then moved from his glove to the large trap lying on the soaked deck and the spiny insect-like creatures flailing inside of it. “Shit, Zaff,” he growled as the rain dripping off his glove began to turn a dark shade of red. “Trap ain’t even a forth full.”

Zafira sighed, “I’ll hole it. You go on inside and have Griff look at you. We’ll worry about it later.”

“Why couldn’t we send the pup to check?”

“You want to send the pup against fuckin’ Neptune?” Zafira’s deep gruff voice chuckled as the storm raged around them, “Get inside, Old Man.”

Zest gave Zafira a small smile before bending forward to walk into the cabin against the wind. Zafira shook his head and went back to dumping the lobsters into the medium-sized hole in the floor below.

Zest only realized how cold he was when the closed the cabin door which quieted the wind blowing outside. He shivered as he quickly pulled off his orange raingear and threw it haphazardly on the hooks by the door. He breathed deeply while he stripped his saturated clothes on his way to the bunks. A small towel hanging from his bunk soaked up the rest of the water on his old skin, but the dry, white t-shirt finally brought a content feeling to him. In his dry clothes, he joined the rest of the men who were off trap duty.

“The hell did you do to your hand, Zest?” asked the man with his purple hair hanging loose. The man in his late thirties was already reaching for the first aid kit.

“Snagged it on trap 58,” Zest replied as the purple haired man in the black Metallica t-shirt and red boxers pulled on a pair of latex gloves and examined the large gash on the man’s hand.

“Is 58 holed?” said a deep voice from the helm.

“Zaff’s doing it now, Chrono,” said Zest as he winced slightly while Griffith dabbed a moist cotton ball gently on the deep gash.

“What’d it look like?” said the man descending from the bridge while adjusting the battered wool hat on his head.

A shot of pain traveled up Zest’s old arm as the first stitch pierced and tugged the skin around his wound. “Slim with scrubs,” he finally grunted.

“Damn it! I wish the weather would calm down so I can send Yuuno out with the Scuba gear to check on the traps before we pull them,” sighed Chrono as he pulled his hat back to run his hand through his hair in frustration, “Means that I’ll need to tap credit to fill up the Asura this week. Shit!”

The captain of the Asura stormed back up to the helm, but his mind was elsewhere trying to figure out a way to keep his small company in the black this quarter. He brushed by a young man in glasses with long blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. The young man sat at the table with a mug of warm coffee in front of him.

“What happened to your hand?” he asked inquisitively as Griffith rolled his eyes while snipping the end of the third stitch with a pair of surgical scissors.

“It got caught of trap 58, pup.”

“Weren’t you wearing gloves,” asked the young man sipping his coffee while the loud roar of howling wind announced Zafira’s entrance into the boat’s cabin.

Zest controlled his annoyance with the young rookie fisherman by focusing on the needle and thread sewing his flesh together.

Zafira joined them with damp hair and in a dry pair of blue-striped boxers. He scratched his thick, light blue chest hair, poured himself a mug of coffee, and sat next to Zest.

“What’s the final word on 58?” asked Zest.

“I had to throw most of ‘em back. Huge haul of punch-tails,” replied the wolfish looking man.

“Shit,” said Griffith while making the final stitch on Zest’s old hands, “Don’t tell Chrono yet. Poor man’ll throw himself into the water if news gets any worse.”

“So, will we be getting paid this week,” asked the blond with his voice laced with arrogance.

“Shut your fuckin’ mouth, pup!” barked Griffith, “Asura’s yearly haul is always smaller than the larger commercial boats, but her captain’s the most honest lobster man in Maine. You’ll get your damn money, but it just may not be this week.”

“Don’t get your balls in a twist!” Yuuno snapped back, “I have bills due this week, and-“

“We all do,” said Zafira’s low voice warningly.

“I’ve got to agree with the pup this time,” grunted Zest as he wrapped gauze around his throbbing hand, “I’ve got the monthly due on Friday.”

“Monthly?” asked Yuuno.

“Alimony, pup,” laughed Zest.

"Alimony?" Yuuno laughed softly, “You don’t strike me as the married type.”

Zest raised an eyebrow, “She didn’t think so either.”

The older man stood from his chair while Griffith’s gloves snapped as he pulled them off. Zafira saw the flash of discomfort in the old man’s eyes as he balanced himself on the rocking boat. Behind the closed door of the bunkroom, Zest allowed a frown to form on his face as he remembered holding her warm body, hearing her calling his name as his body rocked above her, the scent of her long, pink hair…

But then he thought of who held her now, and his uninjured hand clenched in impotent rage.

An awkward silence lingered in the cabin while the rest of the crew listened to the muffled cries of the wind outside.

“I can’t believe that Old Zest was actually married at one point,” said Yuuno trying to strike up a bit of conversation, “I wonder what she was like?”

“Do us a favor, pup,” said Griffith without looking at the new member of the crew, “and don’t ask him about it. Zaff and I watched the shit hit the fan on that one twenty years ago, and we care too much about Zest to remind him of it.”

“Why?”

“He’s changed,” said Zafira, “but that doesn’t help.”

“C’mon guys,” whined Yuuno, “How will I know what not to talk about unless you tell me what happened?”

Zafira glanced at Griffith and shrugged.

“She was as gorgeous as she was tough,” said Griffith staring at his mug, “A lot younger, but she couldn’t cook worth shit-“

“-or clean,” chuckled Zafira obviously remembering something.

“Yeah,” laughed Griffith, ”but she matched Zest perfectly.”

“So what happened?” asked Yuuno, “She sounds like my Nanoha.”

“Times got tough a few years back,” Zafira said with sadness in his voice, “Traps were coming up empty.”

“Zest felt horrible when his wife took a job as a police dispatcher in the city to make ends meet,” said Griffith, ”He started hittin’ the bottle pretty hard.”

“Is that why the Asura doesn’t have a liquor cabinet?” asked the blond.

Zafira nodded.

“The more the money disappeared, the more he would drink, and the more his wife went to work wearing sunglasses and long sleeves,” said Griffith.

“Zest did that?”

“I told you, pup,” said Zafira, “He’s changed since then, but he beat the shit out of her back in those days, and he’ll even tell you that she did the right thing by leaving him.”

Yuuno stared at the experienced fishermen as the boat creaked while the waves continued to pound the sides.

“She packed up in the middle of the night and ran off with one of the city’s cops. I think they live somewhere in North Carolina,” Griffith added, “Zest knows, but I think he loves her enough for her to be happy. He’ll leave her alone.“

“Does the new man treat her well?” asked Yuuno as his view of the grizzled old man changed.

“Who said anything about a man?” said Zafira.

“But you said-“

“She treats Signum very well,” said Zafira with a lopsided grin, “She pulled me over for speeding one time, great-looking young blond-“

“With an awesome rack,” smirked Griffith.

Yuuno could only sip his coffee in confusion.

Later that night, the storm still bounced the ship helplessly upon New England’s waters, but the veteran fishermen usually slept easily as Hell raged outside of the window in these types of starless nights.

Zest turned again on his bunk, which caused the man on the lower bunk to worry. Once Zest fell asleep, he stayed in the same position for the majority of the night.

“What’s wrong, Zest?” Zafira asked.

“Got thinking about Signum again,” said Zest quietly.

“What about?”

“I think it’s time that I apologize and wish her well. Face to face.”

Zafira sighed, “That won’t bring her back.”

Zest went silent, and Zafira listened to the bunk above him creak again. The olive skinned man folded his hands behind his head and let sleep overtake him.

“Zaff!” a voice cried in the darkness.

The muscular, hairy man sat up quickly in confusion. “What?” he asked.

“Zest’s gone!” yelled Griffith in a panic.

“Huh?”

“He’s gone and so is the rowboat!”

“In this weather?” shouted Zafira jumping from his bunk, “Man’s gone insane!”

I'd like to ask what themes would you have for your fics? I mean, what kind of Opening theme and clips would you have, if you have the chance? Ending themes? Insert songs?

For me, I've always been playing with this, making a song chapter for an "opening" like in a real anime. Like for Magical Lyrical BetrayerS, I've chosen "Daybreak's Bell" by L'Arc~en~Ciel for OP and "Diamond Crevasse" by May'n for ED during the 1st season, with "Lion" by Megumi Nakajima + May'n for OP and "Northern Cross" by May'n for ED during the second season. I also have a pletora of insert songs, depending on the mood, from "With You" by HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR to "Seishoujo Ryouki" by ALI PROJECT.

What would you like? And while you are at it, why not think of the VAs for your OCs? Feel free to change the CC VAs as well, especially if they've aged. You can even go further and choose your animation studio! I picked SUNRISE for BetrayerS for Geass reasons.

I also got around to reading some of the VivioSyn fics, and they were hilarious . Syn's definitely a fun character...I'll have to track down her character bio at some point, not to mention read the rest of the fics.

The door slowly opened, great care taken so that it didn’t make a single sound, and with soft tiptoes the girl slipped out from her room, gently and methodically taking each step as though she were balancing on a fragile line. With a glance that lasted longer than intended, the girl stared openly at the closed-off room adjacent to her own, and was cast into confusion once again. Shaking her head violently, she attempted to rid her mind of the tumultuous thoughts, and resumed her creeping down the hallway. It was six in the morning, hours before she would normally wake, but Suzuka found that sleep wasn’t nearly as restful as it should have been. The previous evening had been hard enough, when she’d been constantly analyzing her every motion and word, and when she could barely look at her best friend without second-guessing herself. What made everything worse, though, was the dream she’d had that morning, the one that she’d woken to with a cold sweat and a racing heart – the one that confirmed her conflicted feelings. Too scared to even confront her emotions, too scared to face Arisa, she ran. Taking only a few minutes to write a quick note, Suzuka slipped out through the front door.

Chapter 4

“I think I did something bad…”

“So what else is new?”

“I mean something really bad.”

It was just past one in the afternoon, the lunchtime rush had just died down, and Reika and Arisa were both slumped down at the restaurant’s bar taking well deserved breaks, dead tired after running from table to table for the last two hours. The redhead looked like she was trying to get some much needed shut-eye, with her head buried in her arms on the counter. Arisa, on the other hand, looked like she was on the verge of both panic and serious depression as she repeatedly punched the keys on her cellphone without much success.

“And you think this because…?”

“Suzuka left early this morning, and she left a note saying she was staying at a friend’s place. Her cellphone’s off too…”

“Pft, that’s it? Doesn’t mean you screwed up, she could just be…okay, yeah, it probably means you screwed up.”

“She wouldn’t talk to me last night either…”

The redhead finally popped her head up, looking mildly surprised. “Wait, let me get this straight: Suzuka was avoiding you, she woke up early on her own, and left because she was mad at you?”

She spun around on her stool, looking back and forth out the restaurant windows as if she was searching for something.

“What the heck are you doing?” Arisa asked, thinking that she probably didn’t want to know.

“Looking for the fire and brimstone that’s supposed to be raining down.”

Reika burst out into laughter at Arisa’s angry expression, and in another few seconds the blonde would probably have started throwing heavy objects if it weren’t for the interruption of a cellphone ring. Automatically Arisa’s eyes shot down to the device in her hand, but she was greatly disappointed when she realized the call wasn’t for her. Reika, on the other hand, took a much more leisurely pace at answering her own phone.

“Yo!...Hey, Takumi, what’s up?...Arisa? Yeah, she’s here, you want to talk to…Suzuka? No, Arisa said she……She did what?......YOU SAID WHAT?!”

The redhead nearly fell out of her seat as she listened through the phone, her eyes widening rapidly in surprise as Takumi started explaining on the other side. She cast repeated glances over at the blonde beside her, who was now trying to edge close enough to listen, having heard Suzuka’s name. Scooting away to a safe distance, she started to talk in a low, irritated tone.

“Are you an idiot?! You can’t just go and say that…...You bet your ass you’re getting over here!”

Angrily she snapped her phone shut and then immediately slammed her forehead down into the counter in frustration.

“What was that about?” Arisa demanded, with an expression that said she wouldn’t accept anything but a straight answer.

Reika slowly turned her head towards the blonde, a slight twitch in the corner of her eye. The last thing she wanted to do now was speak with Arisa, but that seemed a little impossible to avoid.

“So…funny story…”

“Sorry to intrude on you like this, Hasegawa-senpai.”

“It’s nothing, really. Anything to help out a friend in need, right?”

It was close to four in the afternoon already, and Suzuka had just gotten off of work, though in truth she wasn’t sure how much work she’d actually done that day. Not sure where to go, just knowing that she didn’t want to go back to the apartment, she’d impulsively called up her swimming senpai and asked if she could stay over for the night. Hasegawa had been a little taken aback by the sudden request, of course, but had agreed without too much hesitation. So, after some quick directions and a half-hour wait, Suzuka had arrived at her doorstep with only the clothes on her back and a seriously troubled expression on her face. The older girl had quickly let her into the house, leading her to the living room where they were currently sitting, facing one another. Suzuka seemed distracted, and would fidget occasionally, while Hasegawa seemed to be feeling awkward, to say the least, not knowing how far she should pry. It wasn’t like they were that close, other than being on the swim team together.

“Your parents won’t mind if I stay here?” Suzuka asked suddenly, as she tried to pull herself back into the present.

“They’re out of town for the weekend. Anniversary or something, I have a tough time keeping track,” Hasegawa answered, fiddling with her dark brown bangs as she wondered what was going on.

“That’s nice,” Suzuka said, a little absentmindedly.

“I think I’ll go make some tea,” Hasegawa said as she tried to figure out how she was going to play therapist. Suzuka didn’t seem to be listening, nor did she notice when the older girl stood and walked off to the kitchen.

When Hasegawa finally came back a good fifteen minutes later, Suzuka looked exactly as she had been when she’d left, still troubled and fidgety. Sighing, the brunette placed both cups onto the table, sliding one in front of the dreary looking girl.

“Careful, it’s still ho -” she hadn’t even finished her warning when Suzuka picked up the cup, drinking nearly a quarter of the piping hot liquid without even batting an eyelash. The brunette could only stare with her mouth hanging open. “Okay, that was just plain creepy.”

The purple-haired girl turned her head a little, like she had only just realized that her senpai was in the same room. “Sorry, did you say something?”

“Yeah, enough’s enough already. I can’t stand this psychotherapy crap, and something obviously got your head tied up in knots, so spill already.”

“It’s nothing…” Suzuka started, but a glare from the older girl told her that excuses weren’t going to work, “Well, it’s a little personal.”

“Well, keeping it in definitely isn’t doing you any good. Besides, considering that you called me up out of the blue, the least you could do is humour me.”

Suzuka opened her mouth, but changed her mind; it was still a delicate subject, and she wasn’t entirely certain of herself. Hasegawa seemed to sense this as well, as she just sighed and fell backwards so she could lie on the floor, rubbing at her eyes tiredly.

“Look, I’m not going to force it out of you or anything, but – “

“I’m in love with my best friend.”

The brunette stopped her movement as the words were processed, and she slowly pushed herself back up.

“Wait…so it is boy problems?”

“Not exactly,” Suzuka answered, a tired smile playing onto her lips. Hasegawa thought the situation over, a little relieved that all she had to deal with was a bit of lovesickness.

“So, I guess you got rejected then?”

“No,” Suzuka said, morosely staring down at the tea leaves floating in her cup. She giggled slightly, though it sounded like a half sob. “It might be easier if I did. I don’t even know if I can bring myself to tell her…”

“Her?” Hasegawa said, raising an eyebrow. She skimmed through her memory, trying to figure out who ‘her’ was referring to. One particular face came to mind, and the brunette started to laugh. “The loud, blonde girl?”

“Arisa,” Suzuka said with a broad smile, finally seeming focused and attentive.

“Interesting choice of love interests,” the brunette said. From what she’d seen of the girl, which wasn’t much, she was a polar opposite of Suzuka.

“We’ve known each other since we were little.”

“Childhood friends then, guess that makes sense.”

“Mmm...Arisa’s always been there, looking out for me,” Suzuka said. She suddenly started to giggle brightly as she remembered an old memory. “There was this time in middle school…”

“Are you going to tell me or not?” Arisa demanded, looking more impatient than she’d been in her life – which was really saying a lot. Takumi and Reika were opposite her, all three seated in the corner booth of a fast-food joint. The redhead looked completely exhausted, having spent the last few hours of her shift at the restaurant doing her best to skilfully dodge Arisa’s questions. Considering the blonde’s persistence, it had turned out to be a task that had nearly driven her insane. With an irritated growl, Reika took a long sip from her drink as she nudged the boy beside her, getting him to talk.

“Look, uh, it’s really not a big deal. Suzuka just had some problems that needed taking care of,” Takumi tried, though he didn’t seem too hopeful.

“Then why didn’t she tell me about it?”

‘Because you’re the one that she’s worrying about, you dolt,’ Reika thought. She couldn’t believe Takumi had gone and blurted the whole deal out like that – he was supposed to be the subtle one here, after all. Sure, it was freaking obvious that the two girls were head over heels in love with each other, despite being completely clueless about it, but he wasn’t supposed to just come out and say it.

“Look, Suzuka’ll be fine, she just got some junk on her mind,” she stated plainly. Arisa looked like she was going to protest again, but the redhead quickly cut her off, “I know it’s hard for you to accept, but she’s a big girl now. I know you like being her knight in shining armour, but she can take care of herself.”

Arisa looked completely indignant. “What’s that supposed to –“

“I mean, face it,” Reika continued, cutting the blonde girl off again, “Sooner or later she’s gonna go and find herself a nice boyfriend, and then she’ll spending a lot less time with us chumps.”

The girl was beside herself now, repeatedly trying to get a few words in, but Takumi stepped in this time, clueing in to what the older girl was trying to do.

“You barely see her school as it is; you’re in completely different courses, different sides of the campus too. Graduation isn’t that far either, and then you two won’t even be going to the same place anymore.”

Reika took the hand-off again, keeping the pace up.

“And another few years down the road she’s gonna have her own life, you know? I mean, it’s not like you guys’ll be roomies forever. She’ll probably be living off in whole different city and then you won’t even see each other everyday anymore. I mean, you guys are best friends forever and all that crap, so you’ll probably keep in touch, visit every month, have some nice chats, you know, what friends usually do when they grow up.”

Arisa was completely flustered now as she tried to deal with everything the two were mercilessly ramming into her head. The best she could do was stammer out a few half sentences.

“What are you – I mean, so what if – that’s just –“

“That is all you guys are, right? Just friends?” the redhead finished.

“Of course we’re – What’s that supposed to – What else would – J-just shut up!” Arisa finally managed to blurt out, and she jumped to her feet, storming out of the building while growling repeatedly under her breath. Reika managed to hold herself back until the blonde was well out of earshot before she finally threw her head back, cackling madly.

“Damn I’m good!” she managed to say between laughs. Takumi couldn’t help but chuckle along with her – Arisa’s reaction had been fairly priceless.

“Okay, I have to admit, that was impressive,” he said, taking a bite from his previously forgotten fries, “of course, Arisa’s the only one in the world that would have worked on. So, you think it did the trick?”

The redhead finally managed to settle down, and sprawled herself out onto the table with a sudden weariness. “If it didn’t, we’re taking those two and locking them in a storage closet together. No way I’m play matchmaker like this again.”

They sat for a few more minutes in silence, picking away at their food, before Reika finally spoke again. “You know, you totally owe me. I don’t clean up messes for free.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll buy you dinner,” Takumi said with a grin.

“Damn straight. And not that cheap crap, you hear me?”


Hasegawa smiled to herself as she sat watching the evening news. It took a bit, but Suzuka had finally loosened up and stopped worrying herself to death. Of course, once the girl had started on the stories about Arisa, it was like the floodgates had broken wide open. She talked for hours without stopping, and all the brunette did was give a little prod here and there just to keep the girl going. She definitely had it bad, that much was obvious, and at now it looked like she wouldn’t be going insane from doubting her feelings anymore, which was definitely a plus. Turning her head slightly so she could listen over her shoulder, Hasegawa heard Suzuka talking softly over the phone.

“Hi, Takumi-kun, it’s Suzuka…Yeah, I’m fine…No, really, I’m okay…Is Arisa there?...No, that’s fine, just tell her I’m doing alright…Yeah…I’m over at a friends, I’ll be staying the night…”

All in all it had been a fairly eventful evening, to say the least, and if even half of the stories she’d heard were true the brunette was pretty sure the whole mess would be cleared up long before the next swim meet. Smiling when she thought about, Hasegawa wondered how it was possible for two people to be so dense for so long.

Arisa was slumped in the couch and staring up at the ceiling, having somehow made it all the way back to the apartment – their apartment – despite being hit with the mental equivalent of a sledgehammer. Over and over again she ran things through her head, though all that managed to do was get her more and more frustrated each time. What did they know anyway? So what if that was what happened to everyone else, it didn’t mean they would turn out like that too – did it? This was Suzuka they were talking about, the girl that had been with her since forever, the one person that had always been by her side, so how could that be lost so easily? Best friends barely scratched the surface of what they had; they were like family, like sisters, like…like…

The more Arisa thought, the clearer everything became. Without a doubt she didn’t want Suzuka to slip away from her, and she refused to let that happen. After all, she was…she was important to her.

And the emotional problems start... great chapter

The younger man with the stoic face nodded seriously and gripped the thick ropes as the other man braced himself by planting one of his boots against the side of the boat.

“Now!”

The two men leaned back and pulled with all their might as the boat tipped from left to right as wave after wave broke over the low sides. The older man slipped as the boat pitched hard starboard, and the large wooden crate smashed onto him as the younger man finally pulled the trap over the side.

“Ok, Zest?” the younger man with olive skin asked as he pulled the other man to his feet, but he could tell by the gash in the grizzled man’s glove that Zest needed to get below the deck.

“Only snagged my damn hand,” Zest replied in annoyance as his examined his now worthless glove. The knowledgeable eyes then moved from his glove to the large trap lying on the soaked deck and the spiny insect-like creatures flailing inside of it. “Shit, Zaff,” he growled as the rain dripping off his glove began to turn a dark shade of red. “Trap ain’t even a forth full.”

Zafira sighed, “I’ll hole it. You go on inside and have Griff look at you. We’ll worry about it later.”

“Why couldn’t we send the pup to check?”

“You want to send the pup against fuckin’ Neptune?” Zafira’s deep gruff voice chuckled as the storm raged around them, “Get inside, Old Man.”

Zest gave Zafira a small smile before bending forward to walk into the cabin against the wind. Zafira shook his head and went back to dumping the lobsters into the medium-sized hole in the floor below.

Zest only realized how cold he was when the closed the cabin door which quieted the wind blowing outside. He shivered as he quickly pulled off his orange raingear and threw it haphazardly on the hooks by the door. He breathed deeply while he stripped his saturated clothes on his way to the bunks. A small towel hanging from his bunk soaked up the rest of the water on his old skin, but the dry, white t-shirt finally brought a content feeling to him. In his dry clothes, he joined the rest of the men who were off trap duty.

“The hell did you do to your hand, Zest?” asked the man with his purple hair hanging loose. The man in his late thirties was already reaching for the first aid kit.

“Snagged it on trap 58,” Zest replied as the purple haired man in the black Metallica t-shirt and red boxers pulled on a pair of latex gloves and examined the large gash on the man’s hand.

“Is 58 holed?” said a deep voice from the helm.

“Zaff’s doing it now, Chrono,” said Zest as he winced slightly while Griffith dabbed a moist cotton ball gently on the deep gash.

“What’d it look like?” said the man descending from the bridge while adjusting the battered wool hat on his head.

A shot of pain traveled up Zest’s old arm as the first stitch pierced and tugged the skin around his wound. “Slim with scrubs,” he finally grunted.

“Damn it! I wish the weather would calm down so I can send Yuuno out with the Scuba gear to check on the traps before we pull them,” sighed Chrono as he pulled his hat back to run his hand through his hair in frustration, “Means that I’ll need to tap credit to fill up the Asura this week. Shit!”

The captain of the Asura stormed back up to the helm, but his mind was elsewhere trying to figure out a way to keep his small company in the black this quarter. He brushed by a young man in glasses with long blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. The young man sat at the table with a mug of warm coffee in front of him.

“What happened to your hand?” he asked inquisitively as Griffith rolled his eyes while snipping the end of the third stitch with a pair of surgical scissors.

“It got caught of trap 58, pup.”

“Weren’t you wearing gloves,” asked the young man sipping his coffee while the loud roar of howling wind announced Zafira’s entrance into the boat’s cabin.

Zest controlled his annoyance with the young rookie fisherman by focusing on the needle and thread sewing his flesh together.

Zafira joined them with damp hair and in a dry pair of blue-striped boxers. He scratched his thick, light blue chest hair, poured himself a mug of coffee, and sat next to Zest.

“What’s the final word on 58?” asked Zest.

“I had to throw most of ‘em back. Huge haul of punch-tails,” replied the wolfish looking man.

“Shit,” said Griffith while making the final stitch on Zest’s old hands, “Don’t tell Chrono yet. Poor man’ll throw himself into the water if news gets any worse.”

“So, will we be getting paid this week,” asked the blond with his voice laced with arrogance.

“Shut your fuckin’ mouth, pup!” barked Griffith, “Asura’s yearly haul is always smaller than the larger commercial boats, but her captain’s the most honest lobster man in Maine. You’ll get your damn money, but it just may not be this week.”

“Don’t get your balls in a twist!” Yuuno snapped back, “I have bills due this week, and-“

“We all do,” said Zafira’s low voice warningly.

“I’ve got to agree with the pup this time,” grunted Zest as he wrapped gauze around his throbbing hand, “I’ve got the monthly due on Friday.”

“Monthly?” asked Yuuno.

“Alimony, pup,” laughed Zest.

"Alimony?" Yuuno laughed softly, “You don’t strike me as the married type.”

Zest raised an eyebrow, “She didn’t think so either.”

The older man stood from his chair while Griffith’s gloves snapped as he pulled them off. Zafira saw the flash of discomfort in the old man’s eyes as he balanced himself on the rocking boat. Behind the closed door of the bunkroom, Zest allowed a frown to form on his face as he remembered holding her warm body, hearing her calling his name as his body rocked above her, the scent of her long, pink hair…

But then he thought of who held her now, and his uninjured hand clenched in impotent rage.

An awkward silence lingered in the cabin while the rest of the crew listened to the muffled cries of the wind outside.

“I can’t believe that Old Zest was actually married at one point,” said Yuuno trying to strike up a bit of conversation, “I wonder what she was like?”

“Do us a favor, pup,” said Griffith without looking at the new member of the crew, “and don’t ask him about it. Zaff and I watched the shit hit the fan on that one fifteen years ago, and we care too much about Zest to remind him of it.”

“Why?”

“He’s changed,” said Zafira, “but that doesn’t help.”

“C’mon guys,” whined Yuuno, “How will I know what not to talk about unless you tell me what happened?”

Zafira glanced at Griffith and shrugged.

“She was as gorgeous as she was tough,” said Griffith staring at his mug, “A lot younger, but she couldn’t cook worth shit-“

“-or clean,” chuckled Zafira obviously remembering something.

“Yeah,” laughed Griffith, ”but she matched Zest perfectly.”

“So what happened?” asked Yuuno, “She sounds like my Nanoha.”

“Times got tough a few years back,” Zafira said with sadness in his voice, “Traps were coming up empty.”

“Zest felt horrible when his wife took a job as a police dispatcher in the city to make ends meet,” said Griffith, ”He started hittin’ the bottle pretty hard.”

“Is that why the Asura doesn’t have a liquor cabinet?” asked the blond.

Zafira nodded.

“The more the money disappeared, the more he would drink, and the more his wife went to work wearing sunglasses and long sleeves,” said Griffith.

“Zest did that?”

“I told you, pup,” said Zafira, “He’s changed since then, but he beat the shit out of her back in those days, and he’ll even tell you that she did the right thing by leaving him.”

Yuuno stared at the experienced fishermen as the boat creaked while the waves continued to pound the sides.

“She packed up in the middle of the night and ran off with one of the city’s cops. I think they live somewhere in North Carolina,” Griffith added, “Zest knows, but I think he loves her enough for her to be happy. He’ll leave her alone.“

“Does the new man treat her well?” asked Yuuno as his view of the grizzled old man changed.

“Who said anything about a man?” said Zafira.

“But you said-“

“She treats Signum very well,” said Zafira with a lopsided grin, “She pulled me over for speeding one time, great-looking young blond-“

“With an awesome rack,” smirked Griffith.

Yuuno could only sip his coffee in confusion.

Later that night, the storm still bounced the ship helplessly upon New England’s waters, but the veteran fishermen usually slept easily as Hell raged outside of the window in these types of starless nights.

Zest turned again on his bunk, which caused the man on the lower bunk to worry. Once Zest fell asleep, he stayed in the same position for the majority of the night.

“What’s wrong, Zest?” Zafira asked.

“Got thinking about Signum again,” said Zest quietly.

“What about?”

“I think it’s time that I apologize and wish her well. Face to face.”

Zafira sighed, “That won’t bring her back.”

Zest went silent, and Zafira listened to the bunk above him creak again. The olive skinned man folded his hands behind his head and let sleep overtake him.

“Zaff!” a voice cried in the darkness.

The muscular, hairy man sat up quickly in confusion. “What?” he asked.

“Zest’s gone!” yelled Griffith in a panic.

“Huh?”

“He’s gone and so is the rowboat!”

“In this weather?” shouted Zafira jumping from his bunk, “Man’s gone insane!”

Since i have only one story that is "serious", which is FtP i dont have a complete"soundtrack" planned for it.

The Op theme would be "New World" from L'Arc~en~Ciel and the End theme would be "My world" from Asian Kung Fu Generation. As for theme songs... i am still thinking that.

Actually I've been meaning to "make" an op and end for RebelS for a while... I'll have to gestate on this and get back to you but I like the idea of Kimi ga Sora Datta(Mai Hime ED) as the ED for season 1 (yes I said season 1)

I don't like picking VA's though >.> wierds me out (and people would think I'm odd for picking english VA's probably )

“Forth we go! Onwards towards possibly scoring with the hotties in love with our manly femininity!” Vice punched the air and posed, earning him a few odd looks from some passersby.

Griffith pushed up his glasses and looked about ready to smack our noisy friend, “That's an oxymoron.” He lightly whapped the guy with the back of his hand.

Vice looked put out, “And when I say our I mean Yuuno's and mine.”

“That's just fine. I don't want any of your manly femininity.”

I half chuckled and half sighed, I really owed them though. I wasn't prepared to ask Chrono-nii and Anki let alone Nanoha and Fate. I had been right though, at the mention of Hayate's name Vice had been ready to fight off dragons, I was surprised to find Griffith was as well, Nanoha hadn't been kidding when she said Hayate was popular.

I was also surprised to find Hayate had failed to mention she wanted us to work that Sunday. So there we were outside of the restaurant a little more than an hour before it opened on an early Sunday morning. We were about to enter when the door swung open on it's own.

“Who the hell are you?”

Okay not on it's own.

The three of us looked down at the little red headed girl, no more then eight or nine. Her Hair was done up in twin pigtails giving her a Pippi Longstocking look. Well it would have been had there not been a skull on her white t-shirt. She was scowling very angrily at us and just generally giving me the heebie jeebies. “Oi! Don't just look dumb answer me.”

“Y-yuuno! I'm Yuuno Harlaown!” I felt like I was being interviewed by a drill instructor.

She looked up at me, which was hard considering she only came up to my chest. “Well you are pretty girly looking.” She sighed, “I guess you're telling the truth. Come on in.” She swung open the door and lead the three of us in.

The inside of the restaurant was quite typical actually. I'd been expecting some kind of I didn't know something special but it looked like every other family restaurant I'd ever seen.

“Yuuno-kun you came!” Hayate popped up over the restaurant's counter. She looked pretty normal that was until she hopped over the counter. That's when I noticed she'd been made up in a butler's uniform, like one from some anime I'd seen advertised on TV, I just couldn't remember the name. “Thanks I didn't know what I was going to do when I had someone say they'd bring a whole busload of girls if there was a cross dressing maid cafe here.”

She looked at Vice and Griffith, sizing them up in her head obviously. “Hmm... I know I have something for you two.” She turned to me eyes sparkling, “Yours has been made up special.”

“Hayate do you want me to get the stuff,” The little red head tugged on Hayate's sleeve.

“Yes please Vita-chan and make sure Signum and Shamal are getting into costume too~”

I opened my mouth to ask Hayate about the little girl but Vice beat me too it, “Hey what's with the obnoxious kid?”

Griffith and I looked at him in horror.

Luckily, Hayate just giggled, “Vita-chan's just a little off putting at times. She's my...” she paused, as if she had to think about it, “my cousin, distant cousin.”

“Hayate-chan~” An older woman with short blond hair appeared from the back, “I found them~.” Despite her age she was quite the attractive woman, though myself I wasn't a big fan of those that much older than me. She held up a few dry cleaning plastic bags. “Are our waiters ready?”

Hayate grinned and turned to us, “Are you ready?”

“I can't believe I'm wearing this.” Griffith looked down at the long maid outfit he'd been given. The outfit was simple enough, a typical french maid one. He'd been given a curly wig as well and some “assets as well”.

“I don't know it's kinda fun,” Vice had really taken to his maid outfit. He was entertaining himself by twirling it round and round and round.

I merely stood and turned red. My dress was the same as theirs except seemingly every single frill Hayate had had been sewn onto it. I could barely move in it.

“One last touch,” Hayate crept up behind me.

“Huh,” I started to turn, but it was too late.

Hayate snatched my hair tie and let my hair fly out.

“I can't do this Yagami-san...”

She patted me on the back, “Yes you can.”

“And you better start going,” Vita walked up next to us, now in her own little butler suit. “'cause the girls are coming.”

I turned in horror as I saw a horde of screaming teenage girl get off a bus.

“I need some more tea~” a red haired girl, only a few years older then myself, held up her cup for the third time in five minutes.

I sighed and grumbled as picked up the tea then turned with a, hopefully, dazzling smile to her and her table, “Then please allow me to get you more mistress.”

Every table surrounding hers erupted in squeals and giggles but she just smiled a bit. “Thank you.”

“It's nothin-”

“Hello~ Any little brothers of mine around~”

I stiffened as a chill came over me.

“Allow me get seat you,” I heard Signum, another one of Hayate's cousins, ask a certain someone.

“No no we're happy to wait until that blond maid is free.”

There was an awkward pause until Signum continued, “You are aware sir that the maids are men correct?”

“Yes. Yes I am.”

“Then right this way then,” Signum's footsteps came closer and closer to me until she tapped me on the shoulder.

“I believe she has enough tea...”

I realized that I had kept pouring the tea which was just about to overflow all over the table. I hurriedly lifted it back up. “S-Sorry!”

The red head shook her head, “No no it's fin-” she stopped mid sentence. Her eyes were fixed on something over my shoulder, then they widened. “Z-Zafira!”

“ANKI!” I whipped around, terrified by the sudden knowledge that not only had Chrono decided to pay me a visit Zafira had as well.

Zafira was looking away seemingly trying not to laugh, “Y-yuuno...”

Chrono on the other hand made no attempt to hid it. “BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!”

“Sorry kid but I never thought your niceness would go this far,” Chrono and Zafira joined Zafira's classmate, Arf at her booth. My brother was lounging on an entire side forcing my other brother to sit next Arf, an arrangement that seemed to make them both uncomfortable.

I simply spoke through gritted teeth, “May I take your order?”

“I believe there's supposed to be a master in there somewhere.”

“Can...I... get....you... something?”

“No I'm no interested,” Chrono shrugged, “Maybe a bit of tea or something.”

“Alright te-”

“On second thought maybe some coffee.”

“Yes sir I'l-”

“No wait I'm feeling the tea.”

“I'll get both,” I snapped the little book shut. “It'll just be a minute.” I was about to leave but a light tug on my dress stopped me.

Zafira looked up at me very seriously, “Is she cute?”

I motioned my head towards Hayate who was barely visible in the kitchen where she was working hard on the restaurant's food.

Zafira nodded, seemingly in approval. I turned to go get Chrono's drinks.

“Nya ha ha Yuuno-kun is that you?” I would have recognized that laugh anywhere.

“Nanoha-san?” I turned to face Nanoha in my... dress.

“Aww I never thought a dress would look so good on a guy.”

“H-harlown-san!” Another familiar face appeared in the doorway, it appeared the universe decided to mock me today.

“T-testarossa-san!”

“Fate-chan!” Nanoha turned around.

“Takamachi-san!”

“Eh?! Nanoha-chan? Fate-chan?” Hayate poked her head out of the kitchen.

“Fate!” Arf stood up.

“A-Arf!” Zafira had to get out to let Arf out of the seat.

“Help!” The overwhelmed Vice and Griffith cried out.

“C-coming!” I ran off, leaving Vita and Signum to clear up the mess.

They ended up moving everyone into a giant table. Fate positioned herself in the corner of the table, Arf sitting protectively next to her. Chrono was sitting across from her, looking very embarrassed about his position. Zafira sat next to him looking a bit annoyed about the situation. Next to him Nanoha had seated herself. And I was their... maid.

I wasn't sure what was going on with all of them but I was grateful I only had one hour left. Most of the other customers were clearing out leaving Griffith and Vice lounging about. I finished up with the last of the customers while my group talked among themselves.

The hour passed by uneventfully, thankfully. The end of our stint as maid ended and we quickly dashed for the back to change. Once back in our normal clothes we regrouped in the main room. Vita was there waiting for us, arms crossed.

“Well...” For a moment I thought she was going to insult us, “You didn't do too bad I guess.”

Hayate walked up to us arms open, she took all of us by surprise and pulled us into a group hug. “I owe you all so much!” She let us go, all three of us bright red. “If you'd um... like you could,” if I wasn't imagining things Hayate seemed to be embarrassed, “you all could stay for dinner. We'll be having leftovers but it will still be tasty.”

Vice looked ready to accept but Griffith stepped on his toe and looked hurriedly between Hayate and me, indicating who he thought the invite was really for.

Vice sighed and shrugged, “sorry Hayate but Griffith and I have go volunteer at a soup kitchen for orphaned puppies. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.”

Hayate nodded slowly, “Ah, well someone has to help the puppies I guess. So um... Yuuno?”

I froze, I looked from Nanoha still lingering by the door like she was waiting, to Fate still finishing off her tea under Arf's watchful gaze with my brother's close by and finally to Hayate trying not to look hopeful.

“A-ah well...”

A. Mm... I'd like to stay for dinner. Thanks
B. Sorry but I've made plans with Nanoha-san maybe later?
C. Sorry but I'll think I'll just go home with my brothers

Outside of the city there was a forest. In the middle of the forest there were some ruins of an ancient unknown civilization. It would usually be full of investigators, archeologists and some tourists. But today was different since there were only four persons and all of them members of the Time-Space Administration Bureau.

The owner of the tome of the night sky, a short haired brunette girl with blue eyes, named Hayate Yagami, looked at the sky as if expecting something. The commandant of the recently formed section six and mistress of the wolkenritter was interested in a reading. Indeed it was true that sometimes mana would gather in random places and stay there for some time. But this was far from normal as the strange reading was out of the normal parameters by a long shot.

“Mistress,” a pink haired woman started. Her name was Signum and, although appearing to be young, she had hundred of years. She was the leader of the wolkenritter a group that was created for the sole purpose of defending the owner of the book of darkness. “Are you sure that is safe to be here? We don’t know what could happen.” the purple haired only said that because she was worried of her mistress.

“Don’t worry,” Hayate said “Maybe it’s nothing.” she said. As vain as it was, she sincerely hoped that it was nothing and that it was only her being paranoiac about this.

“But did you have to come?” a little girl with red hair and blue eyes asked. She appeared to be twelve years but, as Signum, was older than that. Though sounding disrespectful, she was the most worried about her well being.

“Don’t worry Vita-chan, you are here to protect me, right?” the brunette said. Truth be told she didn’t need any kind of protection, being a powerful mage herself, but her knights had sworn to protect her at all times and, although sometimes it was annoying, she always was thankful about it.

“Hayate,” a blonde woman with amethyst eyes exclaimed. Shamal, the healer of the wolkenritter, had a shocked expression on her face “Look, it increased again” referring to the reading that they were investigating. It had grown again.

The cold rain pelted the grimacing men as they strained together to pull the box from the raging waters. Their rain slickers did little to keep the foul mixture of fresh rainwater and the splashes of the rumbling Atlantic Ocean out of their fleece garments under the thick rain gear.

“One more pull!” commanded the older man through clenched teeth over the din of howling wind and the roar of the overtaxed boat engine.

The younger man with the stoic face nodded seriously and gripped the thick ropes as the other man braced himself by planting one of his boots against the side of the boat.

“Now!”

The two men leaned back and pulled with all their might as the boat tipped from left to right as wave after wave broke over the low sides. The older man slipped as the boat pitched hard starboard, and the large wooden crate smashed onto him as the younger man finally pulled the trap over the side.

“Ok, Zest?” the younger man with olive skin asked as he pulled the other man to his feet, but he could tell by the gash in the grizzled man’s glove that Zest needed to get below the deck.

“Only snagged my damn hand,” Zest replied in annoyance as his examined his now worthless glove. The knowledgeable eyes then moved from his glove to the large trap lying on the soaked deck and the spiny insect-like creatures flailing inside of it. “Shit, Zaff,” he growled as the rain dripping off his glove began to turn a dark shade of red. “Trap ain’t even a forth full.”

Zafira sighed, “I’ll hole it. You go on inside and have Griff look at you. We’ll worry about it later.”

“Why couldn’t we send the pup to check?”

“You want to send the pup against fuckin’ Neptune?” Zafira’s deep gruff voice chuckled as the storm raged around them, “Get inside, Old Man.”

Zest gave Zafira a small smile before bending forward to walk into the cabin against the wind. Zafira shook his head and went back to dumping the lobsters into the medium-sized hole in the floor below.

Zest only realized how cold he was when the closed the cabin door which quieted the wind blowing outside. He shivered as he quickly pulled off his orange raingear and threw it haphazardly on the hooks by the door. He breathed deeply while he stripped his saturated clothes on his way to the bunks. A small towel hanging from his bunk soaked up the rest of the water on his old skin, but the dry, white t-shirt finally brought a content feeling to him. In his dry clothes, he joined the rest of the men who were off trap duty.

“The hell did you do to your hand, Zest?” asked the man with his purple hair hanging loose. The man in his late thirties was already reaching for the first aid kit.

“Snagged it on trap 58,” Zest replied as the purple haired man in the black Metallica t-shirt and red boxers pulled on a pair of latex gloves and examined the large gash on the man’s hand.

“Is 58 holed?” said a deep voice from the helm.

“Zaff’s doing it now, Chrono,” said Zest as he winced slightly while Griffith dabbed a moist cotton ball gently on the deep gash.

“What’d it look like?” said the man descending from the bridge while adjusting the battered wool hat on his head.

A shot of pain traveled up Zest’s old arm as the first stitch pierced and tugged the skin around his wound. “Slim with scrubs,” he finally grunted.

“Damn it! I wish the weather would calm down so I can send Yuuno out with the Scuba gear to check on the traps before we pull them,” sighed Chrono as he pulled his hat back to run his hand through his hair in frustration, “Means that I’ll need to tap credit to fill up the Asura this week. Shit!”

The captain of the Asura stormed back up to the helm, but his mind was elsewhere trying to figure out a way to keep his small company in the black this quarter. He brushed by a young man in glasses with long blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. The young man sat at the table with a mug of warm coffee in front of him.

“What happened to your hand?” he asked inquisitively as Griffith rolled his eyes while snipping the end of the third stitch with a pair of surgical scissors.

“It got caught of trap 58, pup.”

“Weren’t you wearing gloves,” asked the young man sipping his coffee while the loud roar of howling wind announced Zafira’s entrance into the boat’s cabin.

Zest controlled his annoyance with the young rookie fisherman by focusing on the needle and thread sewing his flesh together.

Zafira joined them with damp hair and in a dry pair of blue-striped boxers. He scratched his thick, light blue chest hair, poured himself a mug of coffee, and sat next to Zest.

“What’s the final word on 58?” asked Zest.

“I had to throw most of ‘em back. Huge haul of punch-tails,” replied the wolfish looking man.

“Shit,” said Griffith while making the final stitch on Zest’s old hands, “Don’t tell Chrono yet. Poor man’ll throw himself into the water if news gets any worse.”

“So, will we be getting paid this week,” asked the blond with his voice laced with arrogance.

“Shut your fuckin’ mouth, pup!” barked Griffith, “Asura’s yearly haul is always smaller than the larger commercial boats, but her captain’s the most honest lobster man in Maine. You’ll get your damn money, but it just may not be this week.”

“Don’t get your balls in a twist!” Yuuno snapped back, “I have bills due this week, and-“

“We all do,” said Zafira’s low voice warningly.

“I’ve got to agree with the pup this time,” grunted Zest as he wrapped gauze around his throbbing hand, “I’ve got the monthly due on Friday.”

“Monthly?” asked Yuuno.

“Alimony, pup,” laughed Zest.

"Alimony?" Yuuno laughed softly, “You don’t strike me as the married type.”

Zest raised an eyebrow, “She didn’t think so either.”

The older man stood from his chair while Griffith’s gloves snapped as he pulled them off. Zafira saw the flash of discomfort in the old man’s eyes as he balanced himself on the rocking boat. Behind the closed door of the bunkroom, Zest allowed a frown to form on his face as he remembered holding her warm body, hearing her calling his name as his body rocked above her, the scent of her long, pink hair…

But then he thought of who held her now, and his uninjured hand clenched in impotent rage.

An awkward silence lingered in the cabin while the rest of the crew listened to the muffled cries of the wind outside.

“I can’t believe that Old Zest was actually married at one point,” said Yuuno trying to strike up a bit of conversation, “I wonder what she was like?”

“Do us a favor, pup,” said Griffith without looking at the new member of the crew, “and don’t ask him about it. Zaff and I watched the shit hit the fan on that one fifteen years ago, and we care too much about Zest to remind him of it.”

“Why?”

“He’s changed,” said Zafira, “but that doesn’t help.”

“C’mon guys,” whined Yuuno, “How will I know what not to talk about unless you tell me what happened?”

Zafira glanced at Griffith and shrugged.

“She was as gorgeous as she was tough,” said Griffith staring at his mug, “A lot younger, but she couldn’t cook worth shit-“

“-or clean,” chuckled Zafira obviously remembering something.

“Yeah,” laughed Griffith, ”but she matched Zest perfectly.”

“So what happened?” asked Yuuno, “She sounds like my Nanoha.”

“Times got tough a few years back,” Zafira said with sadness in his voice, “Traps were coming up empty.”

“Zest felt horrible when his wife took a job as a police dispatcher in the city to make ends meet,” said Griffith, ”He started hittin’ the bottle pretty hard.”

“Is that why the Asura doesn’t have a liquor cabinet?” asked the blond.

Zafira nodded.

“The more the money disappeared, the more he would drink, and the more his wife went to work wearing sunglasses and long sleeves,” said Griffith.

“Zest did that?”

“I told you, pup,” said Zafira, “He’s changed since then, but he beat the shit out of her back in those days, and he’ll even tell you that she did the right thing by leaving him.”

Yuuno stared at the experienced fishermen as the boat creaked while the waves continued to pound the sides.

“She packed up in the middle of the night and ran off with one of the city’s cops. I think they live somewhere in North Carolina,” Griffith added, “Zest knows, but I think he loves her enough for her to be happy. He’ll leave her alone.“

“Does the new man treat her well?” asked Yuuno as his view of the grizzled old man changed.

“Who said anything about a man?” said Zafira.

“But you said-“

“She treats Signum very well,” said Zafira with a lopsided grin, “She pulled me over for speeding one time, great-looking young blond-“

“With an awesome rack,” smirked Griffith.

Yuuno could only sip his coffee in confusion.

Later that night, the storm still bounced the ship helplessly upon New England’s waters, but the veteran fishermen usually slept easily as Hell raged outside of the window in these types of starless nights.

Zest turned again on his bunk, which caused the man on the lower bunk to worry. Once Zest fell asleep, he stayed in the same position for the majority of the night.

“What’s wrong, Zest?” Zafira asked.

“Got thinking about Signum again,” said Zest quietly.

“What about?”

“I think it’s time that I apologize and wish her well. Face to face.”

Zafira sighed, “That won’t bring her back.”

Zest went silent, and Zafira listened to the bunk above him creak again. The olive skinned man folded his hands behind his head and let sleep overtake him.

“Zaff!” a voice cried in the darkness.

The muscular, hairy man sat up quickly in confusion. “What?” he asked.

“Zest’s gone!” yelled Griffith in a panic.

“Huh?”

“He’s gone and so is the rowboat!”

“In this weather?” shouted Zafira jumping from his bunk, “Man’s gone insane!”

Well well, what do we have here? This looks interesting, some ZestxSignum (Zestnum?) and Shagnum. Maine lobsters are delicious. But it is so freaking cold there.

Scene 5

“Forth we go! Onwards towards possibly scoring with the hotties in love with our manly femininity!” Vice punched the air and posed, earning him a few odd looks from some passersby.

Griffith pushed up his glasses and looked about ready to smack our noisy friend, “That's an oxymoron.” He lightly whapped the guy with the back of his hand.

Vice looked put out, “And when I say our I mean Yuuno's and mine.”

“That's just fine. I don't want any of your manly femininity.”

I half chuckled and half sighed, I really owed them though. I wasn't prepared to ask Chrono-nii and Anki let alone Nanoha and Fate. I had been right though, at the mention of Hayate's name Vice had been ready to fight off dragons, I was surprised to find Griffith was as well, Nanoha hadn't been kidding when she said Hayate was popular.

I was also surprised to find Hayate had failed to mention she wanted us to work that Sunday. So there we were outside of the restaurant a little more than an hour before it opened on an early Sunday morning. We were about to enter when the door swung open on it's own.

“Who the hell are you?”

Okay not on it's own.

The three of us looked down at the little red headed girl, no more then eight or nine. Her Hair was done up in twin pigtails giving her a Pippi Longstocking look. Well it would have been had there not been a skull on her white t-shirt. She was scowling very angrily at us and just generally giving me the heebie jeebies. “Oi! Don't just look dumb answer me.”

“Y-yuuno! I'm Yuuno Harlaown!” I felt like I was being interviewed by a drill instructor.

She looked up at me, which was hard considering she only came up to my chest. “Well you are pretty girly looking.” She sighed, “I guess you're telling the truth. Come on in.” She swung open the door and lead the three of us in.

The inside of the restaurant was quite typical actually. I'd been expecting some kind of I didn't know something special but it looked like every other family restaurant I'd ever seen.

“Yuuno-kun you came!” Hayate popped up over the restaurant's counter. She looked pretty normal that was until she hopped over the counter. That's when I noticed she'd been made up in a butler's uniform, like one from some anime I'd seen advertised on TV, I just couldn't remember the name. “Thanks I didn't know what I was going to do when I had someone say they'd bring a whole busload of girls if there was a cross dressing maid cafe here.”

She looked at Vice and Griffith, sizing them up in her head obviously. “Hmm... I know I have something for you two.” She turned to me eyes sparkling, “Yours has been made up special.”

“Hayate do you want me to get the stuff,” The little red head tugged on Hayate's sleeve.

“Yes please Vita-chan and make sure Signum and Shamal are getting into costume too~”

I opened my mouth to ask Hayate about the little girl but Vice beat me too it, “Hey what's with the obnoxious kid?”

Griffith and I looked at him in horror.

Luckily, Hayate just giggled, “Vita-chan's just a little off putting at times. She's my...” she paused, as if she had to think about it, “my cousin, distant cousin.”

“Hayate-chan~” An older woman with short blond hair appeared from the back, “I found them~.” Despite her age she was quite the attractive woman, though myself I wasn't a big fan of those that much older than me. She held up a few dry cleaning plastic bags. “Are our waiters ready?”

Hayate grinned and turned to us, “Are you ready?”

“I can't believe I'm wearing this.” Griffith looked down at the long maid outfit he'd been given. The outfit was simple enough, a typical french maid one. He'd been given a curly wig as well and some “assets as well”.

“I don't know it's kinda fun,” Vice had really taken to his maid outfit. He was entertaining himself by twirling it round and round and round.

I merely stood and turned red. My dress was the same as theirs except seemingly every single frill Hayate had had been sewn onto it. I could barely move in it.

“One last touch,” Hayate crept up behind me.

“Huh,” I started to turn, but it was too late.

Hayate snatched my hair tie and let my hair fly out.

“I can't do this Yagami-san...”

She patted me on the back, “Yes you can.”

“And you better start going,” Vita walked up next to us, now in her own little butler suit. “'cause the girls are coming.”

I turned in horror as I saw a horde of screaming teenage girl get off a bus.

“I need some more tea~” a red haired girl, only a few years older then myself, held up her cup for the third time in five minutes.

I sighed and grumbled as picked up the tea then turned with a, hopefully, dazzling smile to her and her table, “Then please allow me to get you more mistress.”

Every table surrounding hers erupted in squeals and giggles but she just smiled a bit. “Thank you.”

“It's nothin-”

“Hello~ Any little brothers of mine around~”

I stiffened as a chill came over me.

“Allow me get seat you,” I heard Signum, another one of Hayate's cousins, ask a certain someone.

“No no we're happy to wait until that blond maid is free.”

There was an awkward pause until Signum continued, “You are aware sir that the maids are men correct?”

“Yes. Yes I am.”

“Then right this way then,” Signum's footsteps came closer and closer to me until she tapped me on the shoulder.

“I believe she has enough tea...”

I realized that I had kept pouring the tea which was just about to overflow all over the table. I hurriedly lifted it back up. “S-Sorry!”

The red head shook her head, “No no it's fin-” she stopped mid sentence. Her eyes were fixed on something over my shoulder, then they widened. “Z-Zafira!”

“ANKI!” I whipped around, terrified by the sudden knowledge that not only had Chrono decided to pay me a visit Zafira had as well.

Zafira was looking away seemingly trying not to laugh, “Y-yuuno...”

Chrono on the other hand made no attempt to hid it. “BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!”

“Sorry kid but I never thought your niceness would go this far,” Chrono and Zafira joined Zafira's classmate, Arf at her booth. My brother was lounging on an entire side forcing my other brother to sit next Arf, an arrangement that seemed to make them both uncomfortable.

I simply spoke through gritted teeth, “May I take your order?”

“I believe there's supposed to be a master in there somewhere.”

“Can...I... get....you... something?”

“No I'm no interested,” Chrono shrugged, “Maybe a bit of tea or something.”

“Alright te-”

“On second thought maybe some coffee.”

“Yes sir I'l-”

“No wait I'm feeling the tea.”

“I'll get both,” I snapped the little book shut. “It'll just be a minute.” I was about to leave but a light tug on my dress stopped me.

Zafira looked up at me very seriously, “Is she cute?”

I motioned my head towards Hayate who was barely visible in the kitchen where she was working hard on the restaurant's food.

Zafira nodded, seemingly in approval. I turned to go get Chrono's drinks.

“Nya ha ha Yuuno-kun is that you?” I would have recognized that laugh anywhere.

“Nanoha-san?” I turned to face Nanoha in my... dress.

“Aww I never thought a dress would look so good on a guy.”

“H-harlown-san!” Another familiar face appeared in the doorway, it appeared the universe decided to mock me today.

“T-testarossa-san!”

“Fate-chan!” Nanoha turned around.

“Takamachi-san!”

“Eh?! Nanoha-chan? Fate-chan?” Hayate poked her head out of the kitchen.

“Fate!” Arf stood up.

“A-Arf!” Zafira had to get out to let Arf out of the seat.

“Help!” The overwhelmed Vice and Griffith cried out.

“C-coming!” I ran off, leaving Vita and Signum to clear up the mess.

They ended up moving everyone into a giant table. Fate positioned herself in the corner of the table, Arf sitting protectively next to her. Chrono was sitting across from her, looking very embarrassed about his position. Zafira sat next to him looking a bit annoyed about the situation. Next to him Nanoha had seated herself. And I was their... maid.

I wasn't sure what was going on with all of them but I was grateful I only had one hour left. Most of the other customers were clearing out leaving Griffith and Vice lounging about. I finished up with the last of the customers while my group talked among themselves.

The hour passed by uneventfully, thankfully. The end of our stint as maid ended and we quickly dashed for the back to change. Once back in our normal clothes we regrouped in the main room. Vita was there waiting for us, arms crossed.

“Well...” For a moment I thought she was going to insult us, “You didn't do too bad I guess.”

Hayate walked up to us arms open, she took all of us by surprise and pulled us into a group hug. “I owe you all so much!” She let us go, all three of us bright red. “If you'd um... like you could,” if I wasn't imagining things Hayate seemed to be embarrassed, “you all could stay for dinner. We'll be having leftovers but it will still be tasty.”

Vice looked ready to accept but Griffith stepped on his toe and looked hurriedly between Hayate and me, indicating who he thought the invite was really for.

Vice sighed and shrugged, “sorry Hayate but Griffith and I have go volunteer at a soup kitchen for orphaned puppies. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.”

Hayate nodded slowly, “Ah, well someone has to help the puppies I guess. So um... Yuuno?”

I froze, I looked from Nanoha still lingering by the door like she was waiting, to Fate still finishing off her tea under Arf's watchful gaze with my brother's close by and finally to Hayate trying not to look hopeful.

“A-ah well...”

A. Mm... I'd like to stay for dinner. Thanks
B. Sorry but I've made plans with Nanoha-san maybe later?
C. Sorry but I'll think I'll just go home with my brothers

Outside of the city there was a forest. In the middle of the forest there were some ruins of an ancient unknown civilization. It would usually be full of investigators, archeologists and some tourists. But today was different since there were only four persons and all of them members of the Time-Space Administration Bureau.

The owner of the tome of the night sky, a short haired brunette girl with blue eyes, named Hayate Yagami, looked at the sky as if expecting something. The commandant of the recently formed section six and mistress of the wolkenritter was interested in a reading. Indeed it was true that sometimes mana would gather in random places and stay there for some time. But this was far from normal as the strange reading was out of the normal parameters by a long shot.

“Mistress,” a purple haired woman started. Her name was Signum and, although appearing to be young, she had hundred of years. She was the leader of the wolkenritter a group that was created for the sole purpose of defending the owner of the book of darkness. “Are you sure that is safe to be here? We don’t know what could happen.” the purple haired only said that because she was worried of her mistress.

“Don’t worry,” Hayate said “Maybe it’s nothing.” she said. As vain as it was, she sincerely hoped that it was nothing and that it was only her being paranoiac about this.

“But did you have to come?” a little girl with red hair and blue eyes asked. She appeared to be twelve years but, as Signum, was older than that. Though sounding disrespectful, she was the most worried about her well being.

“Don’t worry Vita-chan, you are here to protect me, right?” the brunette said. Truth be told she didn’t need any kind of protection, being a powerful mage herself, but her knights had sworn to protect her at all times and, although sometimes it was annoying, she always was thankful about it.

“Hayate,” a blonde woman with amethyst eyes exclaimed. Shamal, the healer of the wolkenritter, had a shocked expression on her face “Look, it increased again” referring to the reading that they were investigating. It had grown again.

Doesn't Signum have pink hair not purple? Anyways, this whole mana mystery is intriguing.

“Huh,” I started to turn, but it was too late.

Hayate snatched my hair tie and let my hair fly out.

She patted me on the back, “Yes you can.”

“And you better start going,” Vita walked up next to us, now in her own little butler suit. “'cause the girls are coming.”

I turned in horror as I saw a horde of screaming teenage girl get off a bus.

“I need some more tea~” a red haired girl, only a few years older then myself, held up her cup for the third time in five minutes.

I sighed and grumbled as picked up the tea then turned with a, hopefully, dazzling smile to her and her table, “Then please allow me to get you more mistress.”

Every table surrounding hers erupted in squeals and giggles but she just smiled a bit. “Thank you.”

“It's nothin-”

“Hello~ Any little brothers of mine around~”

I stiffened as a chill came over me.

“Allow me get seat you,” I heard Signum, another one of Hayate's cousins, ask a certain someone.

“No no we're happy to wait until that blond maid is free.”

There was an awkward pause until Signum continued, “You are aware sir that the maids are men correct?”

“Yes. Yes I am.”

“Then right this way then,” Signum's footsteps came closer and closer to me until she tapped me on the shoulder.

“I believe she has enough tea...”

I realized that I had kept pouring the tea which was just about to overflow all over the table. I hurriedly lifted it back up. “S-Sorry!”

The red head shook her head, “No no it's fin-” she stopped mid sentence. Her eyes were fixed on something over my shoulder, then they widened. “Z-Zafira!”

“ANKI!” I whipped around, terrified by the sudden knowledge that not only had Chrono decided to pay me a visit Zafira had as well.

Zafira was looking away seemingly trying not to laugh, “Y-yuuno...”

Chrono on the other hand made no attempt to hid it. “BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!”

“Sorry kid but I never thought your niceness would go this far,” Chrono and Zafira joined Zafira's classmate, Arf at her booth. My brother was lounging on an entire side forcing my other brother to sit next Arf, an arrangement that seemed to make them both uncomfortable.

I simply spoke through gritted teeth, “May I take your order?”

“I believe there's supposed to be a master in there somewhere.”

“Can...I... get....you... something?”

“No I'm no interested,” Chrono shrugged, “Maybe a bit of tea or something.”

“Alright te-”

“On second thought maybe some coffee.”

“Yes sir I'l-”

“No wait I'm feeling the tea.”

“I'll get both,” I snapped the little book shut. “It'll just be a minute.” I was about to leave but a light tug on my dress stopped me.

Zafira looked up at me very seriously, “Is she cute?”

I motioned my head towards Hayate who was barely visible in the kitchen where she was working hard on the restaurant's food.

Zafira nodded, seemingly in approval. I turned to go get Chrono's drinks.

“Nya ha ha Yuuno-kun is that you?” I would have recognized that laugh anywhere.

“Nanoha-san?” I turned to face Nanoha in my... dress.

“Aww I never thought a dress would look so good on a guy.”

“H-harlown-san!” Another familiar face appeared in the doorway, it appeared the universe decided to mock me today.

“T-testarossa-san!”

“Fate-chan!” Nanoha turned around.

“Takamachi-san!”

“Eh?! Nanoha-chan? Fate-chan?” Hayate poked her head out of the kitchen.

“Fate!” Arf stood up.

“A-Arf!” Zafira had to get out to let Arf out of the seat.

“Help!” The overwhelmed Vice and Griffith cried out.

“C-coming!” I ran off, leaving Vita and Signum to clear up the mess.

They ended up moving everyone into a giant table. Fate positioned herself in the corner of the table, Arf sitting protectively next to her. Chrono was sitting across from her, looking very embarrassed about his position. Zafira sat next to him looking a bit annoyed about the situation. Next to him Nanoha had seated herself. And I was their... maid.

I wasn't sure what was going on with all of them but I was grateful I only had one hour left. Most of the other customers were clearing out leaving Griffith and Vice lounging about. I finished up with the last of the customers while my group talked among themselves.

The hour passed by uneventfully, thankfully. The end of our stint as maid ended and we quickly dashed for the back to change. Once back in our normal clothes we regrouped in the main room. Vita was there waiting for us, arms crossed.

“Well...” For a moment I thought she was going to insult us, “You didn't do too bad I guess.”

Hayate walked up to us arms open, she took all of us by surprise and pulled us into a group hug. “I owe you all so much!” She let us go, all three of us bright red. “If you'd um... like you could,” if I wasn't imagining things Hayate seemed to be embarrassed, “you all could stay for dinner. We'll be having leftovers but it will still be tasty.”

Vice looked ready to accept but Griffith stepped on his toe and looked hurriedly between Hayate and me, indicating who he thought the invite was really for.

Vice sighed and shrugged, “sorry Hayate but Griffith and I have go volunteer at a soup kitchen for orphaned puppies. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.”

Hayate nodded slowly, “Ah, well someone has to help the puppies I guess. So um... Yuuno?”

I froze, I looked from Nanoha still lingering by the door like she was waiting, to Fate still finishing off her tea under Arf's watchful gaze with my brother's close by and finally to Hayate trying not to look hopeful.

“A-ah well...”

A. Mm... I'd like to stay for dinner. Thanks
B. Sorry but I've made plans with Nanoha-san maybe later?
C. Sorry but I'll think I'll just go home with my brothers

“Forth we go! Onwards towards possibly scoring with the hotties in love with our manly femininity!” Vice punched the air and posed, earning him a few odd looks from some passersby.

Griffith pushed up his glasses and looked about ready to smack our noisy friend, “That's an oxymoron.” He lightly whapped the guy with the back of his hand.

Vice looked put out, “And when I say our I mean Yuuno's and mine.”

“That's just fine. I don't want any of your manly femininity.”

I half chuckled and half sighed, I really owed them though. I wasn't prepared to ask Chrono-nii and Anki let alone Nanoha and Fate. I had been right though, at the mention of Hayate's name Vice had been ready to fight off dragons, I was surprised to find Griffith was as well, Nanoha hadn't been kidding when she said Hayate was popular.

I was also surprised to find Hayate had failed to mention she wanted us to work that Sunday. So there we were outside of the restaurant a little more than an hour before it opened on an early Sunday morning. We were about to enter when the door swung open on it's own.

“Who the hell are you?”

Okay not on it's own.

The three of us looked down at the little red headed girl, no more then eight or nine. Her Hair was done up in twin pigtails giving her a Pippi Longstocking look. Well it would have been had there not been a skull on her white t-shirt. She was scowling very angrily at us and just generally giving me the heebie jeebies. “Oi! Don't just look dumb answer me.”

“Y-yuuno! I'm Yuuno Harlaown!” I felt like I was being interviewed by a drill instructor.

She looked up at me, which was hard considering she only came up to my chest. “Well you are pretty girly looking.” She sighed, “I guess you're telling the truth. Come on in.” She swung open the door and lead the three of us in.

The inside of the restaurant was quite typical actually. I'd been expecting some kind of I didn't know something special but it looked like every other family restaurant I'd ever seen.

“Yuuno-kun you came!” Hayate popped up over the restaurant's counter. She looked pretty normal that was until she hopped over the counter. That's when I noticed she'd been made up in a butler's uniform, like one from some anime I'd seen advertised on TV, I just couldn't remember the name. “Thanks I didn't know what I was going to do when I had someone say they'd bring a whole busload of girls if there was a cross dressing maid cafe here.”

She looked at Vice and Griffith, sizing them up in her head obviously. “Hmm... I know I have something for you two.” She turned to me eyes sparkling, “Yours has been made up special.”

“Hayate do you want me to get the stuff,” The little red head tugged on Hayate's sleeve.

“Yes please Vita-chan and make sure Signum and Shamal are getting into costume too~”

I opened my mouth to ask Hayate about the little girl but Vice beat me too it, “Hey what's with the obnoxious kid?”

Griffith and I looked at him in horror.

Luckily, Hayate just giggled, “Vita-chan's just a little off putting at times. She's my...” she paused, as if she had to think about it, “my cousin, distant cousin.”

“Hayate-chan~” An older woman with short blond hair appeared from the back, “I found them~.” Despite her age she was quite the attractive woman, though myself I wasn't a big fan of those that much older than me. She held up a few dry cleaning plastic bags. “Are our waiters ready?”

Hayate grinned and turned to us, “Are you ready?”

“I can't believe I'm wearing this.” Griffith looked down at the long maid outfit he'd been given. The outfit was simple enough, a typical french maid one. He'd been given a curly wig as well and some “assets as well”.
