Rainbow should give you a suitably bleak experience. Now and Then, Here and There is also incredibly depressing.

She, the Ultimate Weapon has quite the depressing set-up, along with a few seriously hard hitting episodes. There's one episode i'll never forget, and is easily one of the most depressing 22 minutes you can ever experience.

Wolf's Rain perhaps? Depending on which girl you support, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien can be variously depressing or infuriating.

Pale Cocoon can also be vaguely depressing, in the all-hope-is-pointless kind of way.

But if you're really sadomasochistic, you can go crush yourself with Grave of the Fireflies.

Yeah if you want to be crushed, then Grave of the Fireflies is the film to do it, by far.

Chrono Crusade - the anime
Elfen Lied

I'm going to second (or am i the fifth now) Grave of the Fireflies. Just because

Eh? Doesn't really stick out as particularly depressing to me... Just weird and nonsensical.

I second Elfen Lied. Although at first Elfen is not really depressing it gets more depressing the more you learn about the characters. Don't judge Elfen by your first impression.

its been suggested many times before, but Elfen Lied and Grave of the Fireflies are depressing

I also recommend CLANNAD and CLANNAD ~After Story~

I'm somewhat surprised 5cm Per Second hasn't been mentioned, especially as the OP mentioned relationships. Its not a series though (well, technically it is 3 chapters back to back).

Texhnoloyze - it manages to be the single most depressing anime I've ever seen, and I've watched Grave of the Fireflies.

It's only depressing at the end IMO. I'd say up until the end, it gets your hopes up (just like any other romance anime)..but BAM, you're wrong! Lol.
