A few weeks ago, I decided to get away from a Vampire Lord build and gave the Werewolf a try. Oh boy, did I suck as a werewolf and I kept getting killed! So I went back to the Vampire Lord build. IMHO the Vampire lord has too many advantages over the Werewolf. The Werewolf relies too much on Melee combat while the Vampire lord is more versatile, able to do both ranged and Melee. And since the Vampire Lord can change forms as will, if I run low on health I can run to cover, revert back to human form, heal, and get my hide back into the battle. As a Werewolf, if my health is low I'd have to wait to transform back. I did discover a mod that makes Werewolves more powerful so I may give that a try and once again become a Werewolf.

No disagreement that it is hard NOT to twitch a lot browsing the "mods of wtf'ness" to find something that slips in nicely.

Werewolves are a lot easier to play as once you learn to take advantage of their ragdolling attack. A single charged strike, rather than a dual charged strike, typically hits an enemy and knocks them off their feet, giving you more time to tear it to pieces. Werewolves also rely on their howls to negate some situations, and for that you need to find the proper totem and then fill in the perk slots to upgrade it. It's a bit tedious, but a lot of combat situations as a werewolf become a lot more bearable when you can summon two extra spectral werewolves that start ripping into everyone.

Meh, ignore me, just bragging. There are a few little things I would change about skyrim (the player menu is not on of them ) but it is not enough to make me bother with mods.
Normally I would've uninstalled Skyrim after finishing all of it, but adding mods somehow increased replay value by making the game look better as well as becoming more functional. Modding also taught me on how to carefully tweak and tune the game with a balance of performance and quality.

Also: Mods that make mages not whipping boys.

And harems.

Fantastic harems.

Same. It has vastly increased the replay value - making it one of the longest played games I've ever messed with.

Hilarious comic -- evil mom.

Mods can definitely help increase the replay value of many games and thus one of the reasons why I overwhelmingly favor MOD support for games. Unfortunately few developers release Mod tools and SDKs anymore, and that is damn disappointing for me. But Publishes can't have them since they wouldn't be able to squeeze us dry with DLCs with those pesky Mod tools out there.

I dunno, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas managed to do a pretty good job of getting people's money via DLC despite the mod tools available.

One of the reasons why developers don't do this is because the source code for their games include third-party software that they find very difficult if not impossible to re-license (that is the "official" explanation as to why Battlefield 3 has no editor or mod tools) for widespread use, such as plugins that generate foliage/trees, wave or cloud patterns, etc. Not to mention that most of the time those level editors can become fairly complex and sometimes require more than one program to truly create novel material. There are a few exceptions like Crysis and ArmA, but those programs are more like sandbox editors rather than true mod tools.

Also, some games have multiplayer components with worldwide competitions/rankings (think of the recent official CoD championships where there are actual financial rewards) and their devs don't like granting the player and modder bases the tools that could potentially allow them to bypass their anti-cheat systems. I remember there once was a fanmade plugin that allowed people to play on BF3 maps in true nighttime conditions (I mean, practically pitch black darkness, not the deep blue-tinged night you'll see on certain maps), but DICE blacklisted it because it involved code injection and the programmers didn't want to send the message that this kind of coding was acceptable (because it could easily be used to create aimbots or other injection-type hacks) as a whole.

For Skyrim, modding was a-okay because there's no MP component and the DLCs have massive (see Dragonborn, Dawnguard) amounts of content (which eventually gave them more appeal than the comparatively small "gameplay aspect" mods, thus guaranteeing good sales), but they will not extend this policy to Elder Scrolls Online.

I can't even begin to comprehend how anyone could be okay with the horrible inventory screen. It works, sure, but its like going to the grocery store for a week's worth of food and using your hands instead of a cart to carry the food. You can do it, but its absurdly inconvenient. Just use the dang cart...er I mean download SKYUI.

never expected so many answers so I didn't check the thread for a while...so...a short one...

The problem is that I played it many times, and never finished all of it
When I'm finally gonna finish it, I may try fucking around with mods, just for the hell of it, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna use mods in a serious playthrough, no matter how lore-friendly they are.
I'm not against mods, I use them (I modded the hell out of some games in the past), but only if I have nothing better to do.

When it comes to the Elder Scrolls games, I'm completely the opposite. I don't consider it a serious playthrough, unless I've taken the time to mod the game to my satisfaction.

There are always the interface improvements, SKYUI and Categorized Favorites help with having to spend less time navigating menus and more time navigating the world. I've made it a point to always run with a survival mod; it helps with making food and bedding have meaning to the game. Now there's a reason to cook. With Skyrim, hypothermia helps with immersion, now the cold weather isn't just pretty graphics. The Unofficial patches fix bugs that are missed by Bethesda, so they're a must. Then there's the mods that make the world look more lived in. If there's a war going on, I want to see it. The roads should have more travelers. The animals should have their own young. Other than that I like to use various mods to tweak specific playthroughs. I'm sure there are other mods that I generally use, but I haven't played in a while, so I can't remember everything that I've used.

If you cared to read all that, nothing that I mentioned challenges the lore. If anything, some of the mods enhance the lore, making the world seem much more believable.
I highly recommend taking a little time to browse through the mod listings, not to get mods, but to just see what all that you can do. There are mods of every sort and not just ones that do absurd things.

I read all that. I already know about nexus. I already know about the mods you described. I'm not in the dark you know. I'm not trying to make the game better. If I'm going to play, I'm going to play it the way it was meant to be. Cooking has no meaning? Then I'm not gonna cook. One less mundane activity to worry about and more time for the rest of the game. And of course I patch the game. Patches are a different story, and they're a must, since the official patch is not enough. If I want to play Skyrim differently (or just tweak it), well, that will come later.

I began modding when, almost finished with most of the game, I wanted my character to wear non-standard school uniforms just for fun, and a body mod to go with, before picking up a face mod (after realizing that her face looked terrible).

anyone know if there exists a skyrim mod where the regions are leveled? err.. i guess that doesn't make sense; rather where the creatures don't level with you, but have a fixed level based on region, like if any of you guys played the old(er) Might & Magic games (specifically 6-9), or dark souls/ demon souls.

I've just been enjoying my playthrough with the F/S N Saber armor set, figure since 'King' Arturia is essentially 'dragonborn' it would make a good crossover, heh.

Excalibur is hilariously OP though, well up to a certain point.

If I was gonna put anime mods into Skyrim, I wouldn't do a serious play through with them. If I did anime mods in Skyrim, I'd just go into smut and porn mod territory.

But I haven't bothered with much of that, or any anime mods. The most I've done is the nude female mod and the bathing beauties mod (the second one I ended up uninstalling after a while, too).
