Looking for way freeze a h264 mkv

Hi, im looking for a way to freeze picture & sound in a mkv for a specific amount of time. I need this because i want to insert large amounts of textpassages per subtitles and it's impossible to read all of it unless you somehow stop the video from advancing.
Unfortunatly im pretty inexperienced with encoding. Is there any simple way to do it?

Simplest way (doesn't require reencoding the video) is to just adjust the video timecodes so the frame you want lasts a lot longer than normal. VFR, in other words. You will probably have to edit the audio in audacity or something though unless your freeze is at the very start or very end of the video (in that case you can solve it with simple delays).

If you can't do that, you need to reencode the video. Use the loop() function in avisynth to repeat the frame you want, and remember to adjust the audio accordingly as well.
