Saw this has been fansubbed, but even Google won't tell me much about it, other than it was an anime series based on an RPG from the 90s? Does anyone else know anything about this, or whether it's good or not?

Mahou Gakuen Lunar! Aoi Ryu no Himitsu (movie)

Plot Summary: Barua of the Magic Race (Vile Tribe) has kidnapped students of the Magic School. Elie, Rena and Senia,are asked to look for them by the schools master. Along their search they find interesting and crazy things, and get into trouble as usual. Upon finding the students, they find their magic is not strong enough to save them, but they get some help from an unwanted friend.

its an old sega saturn MPeg movie video game turned OVA i think?

it was the oddball in the lunar collection. kind of like that chocobo RPG in the FF series.

I'm the bloke who fansubbed this and added it to the site

The VHS and idea for the project was a friend of mine (ZP). He'd got a friend of his to do the translation work. I'd already captured the video and gave him a low quality copy so he could then time the subtitles to that.
I then used Virtual Dub / DIVX 5.02 to process and encode the file and apply all the filters to clean up the VHS! ... yes, this was a VHS source and it took a lot of playing to get the video looking this clean.
Hint - use the 'Temporal filter'.
