Even if that's the case, the very fact that it (apparently) only gets properly addressed at the very end of the WN (way into the 2nd half of the Alicization Arc) still feels like an asspull to me, as if the author had no good time or explanation for it until he got Accel World as a sort of scapegoat.

Perhaps in the novels it was more obscured and not revealed until later, but at least in the anime it felt pretty clear to me. (Of course, maybe it helped that I knew Accel World so understood the hints the anime was leaving about it, which also didn't exist yet when the original WN came out.)

According to YouTuber Foxen, the whole Hax Mode is pretty much Anime Original, not being referred at all in the Novels so far.
He also theorized that the Anime may have taken some nodes from Accel World, most likely Brain Burst's Incarnate System. Still, being reminded of how many times it actually happened (once every arc) feels funny. And I don't mind at all |

Good thing for A-1 because as LN reader I can totally see how the production in around ep 16-24 fell apart, the animation was inconsistent, plot dragged out at some places and rushed here and there where they shouldn't, just to create some artificial cliffhangers. WoU is a lot more action packed, so they definitely need that cour break.
