Mashiro no Oto



Marimo Ragawa's manga series "Mashiro no Oto" is reportedly receiving a TV anime adaptation scheduled to begin April 2021, animation production: Shin-Ei Animation.

Plot

Shamisen is a traditional Japanese musical instrument that looks similar to a guitar. Teenager Sawamura Setsu’s grandfather who raised him and his older brother Wakana, recently passed away. His grandfather was one of the greatest Shamisen players and the two siblings grew up listening to him play and learning to play the instrument.

Since the grandfather’s death, Setsu dropped out of high school, moved to Tokyo and has been drifting, not knowing what to do besides play his Shamisen. That’s when his successful and rich mother, Umeko storms into his life and tries to shape Setsu up. She enrolls him back into high school but little does Setsu know that he is about to rediscover his passion for Shamisen.

So, we already have koto and now its shamisen. Why not?

I thought the same thing reading the summary. I'll be more than happy if it turns out to be even half as good as Kono oto tomare.

Ragawa is one of shoujo manga's greats. While this is one of her only series I haven't read, I can't imagine it's not as exceptional as everything else she's done.

This thing has been around for a decade and nominated for pretty much everything short of a Grammy. It's surprising no one has translated part of it, even unofficially.

We'll see. Some of us think "the koto series" is pretty great, and this is a series from one of the lions of traditional shoujo/shounen-ai. But held up against the likes of the other series announcements we've seen lately, it's like a great beacon in the darkness.
