I read the first 3 chapters of the manga. It kinda rubbed the wrong way with me. One day he was so head over heels for her, then something happened that shook him and then he distances himself from her. He even went back from using her first name to her last name to denote the distance he's putting. I kinda feel bad for the girl for this sudden change really. At least the way it was presented it doesn't feel cute that now she's the one going for him given the suddenness of his reality check. Just seeing it from her perspective at how he turned heels from this, I just feel bad for her so I stopped reading.
Maybe the anime may change my mind.

This will divide the audience. People will praise MC for moving on and cheer for him for any possible chance he might get with a girl.
On the other hand people will bash the heroine....
Then people will hate MC for lying because he still crushes the main heroine, any other is filler to attract the audience.

Ah...this is that title that I keep seeing on the top daily ranked real life romance web novel lists over and over again over the years.

I think I did try to read the web novel, but I stopped after a short time. Too bad I didn't save the link and leave a note as to why I stopped reading it. I should try it again. Yeah, these kinds of stories do tend to divide people. Did the main character make a good, proper attempt or did he give up in a bad, not nice and improper way?

EDIT:

After reading it again, I remember why I stopped reading it. Aika was getting to be annoying. I can't enjoy a romance novel when the love interest annoys me.

Interesting reception to the female lead. To be bashed despite being one of the main characters and for the guy to actually be rooted by readers is so topsy-turvy that I can't wrap my head around it.

It's one of my favorite novels because the MC's thoughts are hilarious. The anime probably won't even be half as fun, but should still be fun.

I seen a bunch of comments about Aika and I see what you guys mean. A lot of people don't like Aika at all.

So it's not just me.

The story setup is different, but I wish some aspects of it were tweaked so I would be able to like it more. If they were going to adopt a story about girls being anxious about a guy no longer being interested in them, I wish they adapted "The girls who gave me trauma glance at me, but unfortunately it's too late" instead.

At least the beginning part of that was kinda funny in a sad sort of way...before it started getting weird with the sister and mom. I guess they can't put that in an anime.

I didn't hate her, but didn't particularly like her either until her POV chapters where you learn why she acted like she did, and then everything makes sense and I started to like her.
I still ship her with Wataru because of how much he likes her, but yeah, the other girls are more interesting.

I thought the same but the first chapter epiphany worked and to be honest was good for him since she made clear she didn't want anything from him and that's what he did.

thing is that aika doesn't know what to do without him paying attention to her, it's like reverse psychology working.

Simpin' ain't easy...

I might stick with this just to see how bad it can get. MC is pretty insufferable but I've heard good things about Aika. I'll see if I can make it far enough to find out.

Monogatari is pretty solid (though you'd have to try out season 1 first)

Well, that's basically Wataru Sajo with Aika Natsukawa...but one near miss of a soccer ball to the face puts things into perspective for him as he recognizes his behavior and actually...gives up? Really !? The OP is a pretty classic romcom OP with colorful visuals, shot of the supporting cast, and a lively and energetic beat, all centered around Sajo and Aika properly facing each other . Man, Sajo's reputation was so terrible even his teacher knew he was obsessed with Aika...and everyone keeps freaking out that he's treating Aika like a normal classmate instead of going overboard with her. Even Aika's thrown off and she hated how he was around her . Oh hey, Yumiri Hanamori as Kei, Aika's best friend! It's fun to see her play a lively and cute character. Plus, fangs ! Barely a day into Sajo's new stance on his relationship with Aika and there's already a cute girl named Rena trying to get close to him! Although it turns out she was just trying to make her ex-boyfriend jealous because he talked about Aika being his type so she broke up with him. Ah...high school relationships . So Sajo fell for Aika after falling into her breasts and getting slapped by her after getting punched by the boyfriend of a girl he confessed too? And she made peace with everybody. Although it sounds like the whole "falling into her breasts and getting slapped" part was a lie . It's not that Sajo doesn't like Aika any more, so much as he doesn't see a point in continuing to pursue her and bother her when he basically worships her and wants her to be happy. Which I guess is good, and it helps put things into perspective for Rena so she can get back with her boyfriend. So things more or less work out . Oh hey, Sajo's big sis is the vice-president of the student council and voiced by Mikako Komatsu? And they wrestle? Nice . How does Aika feel about Sajo? I mean, if she really didn't care about him why would she got out of her way to visit his house to check how he's doing after seeing how he acted around her? Or bristle when he tries to reset their relationship and not call her by her first name any more? Or cry when Sajo wants things to be "normal" between them and ask if he can set her up with anyone? Or maybe she was upset that he thought she had friends she could set him up with after he basically drove the other girls away from her? Will Sajo be trying to help Aika make friends ? __________________
