I suppose straight up porn vs something with a story could be comparable to having sex with someone you've just met vs someone you've come to care about. The point being that giving a shit about something makes it a better emotional investment.

Bingo. I find "porn" to be boring as hell. Get me to care about the people, show them developing a relationship, make it matter, and zing, that's a hell of a lot more erotic.

Considering most of my favourite VNs do not contain H-Scenes (The Kyokugen Dasshutsu Series, Dangan Ronpa, the Kagaku Adventure Series) and those that do could have VERY WELL done without (or would even be better, like the TypeMoon games) I voted Nay.
But really, it depends on the story. If it's a lovecomedy, I guess ero scenes kind of fit. |

Ero works if there is an emotional investment into the characters - great examples of that are the various storylines in Crescendo and the climax (figurative, storytelling, sexual ) of Meiya's route in Muv-Luv Extra. Otherwise it's just fanservice and doesn't really have a point.

Plus all the extra costs (translation, marketing etc.) for bringing those games to the foreign market combined with a low chance of succes/profit and it's not that strange why we haven't seen that many English translated VN's in the west. |

I do think non-ero VNs have something to offer to anyone who wants a good story (provided the given VN is good), so it's a matter of reaching out to the intended audience. I think anime fans would be top of that list; I myself find them a refreshing alternative to just watching something. And when you're given a choice to make in the story, you care that much more because you're making that choice.

Meh, I couldnt care less about VNs being officially localized. If they are, fine, but Im not going to sit and talk about how it should be done, b/c I think theyre not meant to appeal to many people, at least not the typical ones. Too many mainstream games that havent left Japan that Id rather rally for localization.
Weve even seen mainstream VNs like Gyakuten series and Prof. Layton do well outside of Japan, but that hasnt really affected the other VNs at all. |

Eroge is a visual novel.
Not all visual novels have erotic content, hell some of them aren't even about sex or romance. A lot of people play eroge for their erotic content. They don't play visual novels just for ero. Unless eroge isn't a visual novel, the exclusion of erotic content from all visual novels would make sense. But eroge is a visual novel, with erotic content. I don't give a damn about erotic scenes in some visual novels I played, I find it annoying. But there are time when I play eroge for erotic content (and I don't give a damn about raising flag there). Hence erotic content is fine for eroge. But I just wish there were more all age visual novels where I don't have to waste my time with erotic scenes while trying to conquer all roads. |

You probably have to look at what game element is the most dominent one to somewhat make a conclusion. IMO gyakutan saiban games are pretty much primarily VN's with some point and click elements and minor puzzle elements, while i think the layton games are rather more a puzzle game with VN elements because it has a story. |

Regardless, that doesn't change the fact that Gyakuten Saiban is a visual novel. I have a feeling that Redkey said GS isn't one just because GS doesnt have moe graphics or focus on love or something that has nothing to do with what a VN fundamentally is. I included Professor Layton to get my point across, because it's enough of a visual novel to introduce many non-Japanese gamers to how VNs work. Last edited by Kudryavka; 2013-01-27 at 09:09. |

Heck even non RPG's like corpse party and blazblue have that format. I never denied that the gyakuten Saiban games aren't VN's (i even said that it was primarily a VN), i was more doubting on your statement that the layton games were VN's. |
