Short but awesome
Would like to watch something great but not really long from 12 to 22(25) episodes.
Better action with non-child(older than 15 y.o.) protagonist from past 7-10 years. Something that arouses emotions like Gurren Lagann. That's my profile. http://myanimelist.net/profile/Violet_fire

Action with someone older than 15? Let's see...
07-Ghost are nice action series with biggest cast being voiced by Bleach seiyus. It has 25 episodes and some moving moments. Biggest part of characters are guys. Main hero is in military so should be old enough. Baccano are great 13 episode series. Because of the way story is told there are no real main characters. everyone are of different age. Very good story telling. Berserk are great 25 episode long series. However, the story is not fully finished and requires manga to be read. Main hero is an adult. Some touching moments too. Claymore are 26 long series with anime original ending, manga goes further. Has some great sword action, a bit bloody. Main characters are mostly females, adults. Quiet touching, Teresa's arc was the best. Since you have watched Fate/Stay Night, how about prequel Fate/Zero? I liked it more than Night series. However, second part will air only in April. Ga-Rei Zero has some cool sword action and is very emotional towards the end. You really should check it out, it is only 12 episode long. Main heroines should be around 15 or more. Might seem weird but how about Magical Madoka? Looks girly but it has a very serious plot behind, give it a try at least until episode 3. Is quiet emotional and only 12 episodes long. Mai HiME series are a bit similar to Madoka. It is 26 episodes long, first half is mostly comedy but second gets quiet dramatic. The idea is a bit similar to Fate series. Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin are not exactly action series but do have some fights, but very emotional. Has something similar to Gurren Lagann, when you watch it you'll see what I mean. It has 26 episodes. Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles are nice series about war, gets emotional later on and is 26 episodes long. Sword of the Stranger is a movie with great sword action. Hope you'll like some of them. Let me know what you think and I might be able to suggest more then.

Also seen:
Fate/Zero Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles Sword of the Stranger Ga-Rei Zero Will look at Baccano and Samurai 7. As for everything else mentioned I know about these series, but they don't appeal to me at this time.

I'll toss Kurenai (12 episodes) into the mix despite the mains being sixteen and seven years old. It's still a story with mature themes, and certainly has its emotional aspects. The supporting characters consist of a variety of adults and two high-school-aged girls.
Three other shorter options I'll suggest are REC, and the combination of Bakeneko and its sequel Mononoke. You can watch REC in an evening. Bakeneko has three episodes; Mononoke has story arcs of two-to-four episodes each. The youngest main character in these shows is the heroine of REC, who's about eighteen; the rest of the characters are adults. If you want a couple of shows with adults (25+), I recommend Bartender and Hataraki Man. Both of these are eleven episodes. Finally I'll suggest the twelve-episode Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. The main characters include a brother/sister pair of kids and a woman in her twenties. She helps the children return home after an earthquake hits Tokyo.

I suggest Innocent Venus, it is a lil mecha gem IMO. Plot twist and char development is remarkable for such a short show, and the mecha action is fun to say the least. Main protagonists are 2 males. The story revolves around an underaged female, but she is not too annoying imo. Actually, i should go see the show again

Well, I would echo Seiji's suggestion of Kurenai and others' suggestion of Iriya no Sora - UFO no Natsu. Well ... I am not sure if it would be your cup of tea or not ... but you might give Shinigami no Ballad a look. If you are fine with 1 ep OVA you might try Hiyokoi (romance to the max) and Kowarekake no Orgel. For the latter prepare a box o' tissues just in case, btw....

Once again...I'll suggest Needless...It's like the most action packed short series ever...
Sacred Seven may also be something you'd like with lots of visual action... If you loved Gurren Lagann, the you better see Dead Leaves, which is the same animation team...
