Which you were not allowed to show your classmates, if the sound samples were copyrighted material (at least not without some institutions knowing of it... you'ld need to pay fees then, each time you perform it in public places -thats at least what the GEMA does in our country). Thatswhy eromert's question...

Imagine if you were the sound designer for a program and worked really hard to create an unusual or distinctive sound effect. Would you want anyone and everyone to copy your work without your permission?

youre probably right i dont know how things go in other countries but in here if i make something funny and show it to my friend it isnt like they would call up the cops and bust me.. what i do wonder about is that ti isnt alloed for game sound clips.. but people are allowed to use music ( AMV's etc. ) btw movie music gets used quite often in the netherlands, quite some travel challenge shows use music from example: Kingdom of Heaven and likewise work from Zimmer as background music when they show the commercial or when its in a time is ticking.. who's gonna win! kinda theme

Even without a notice, it is automatically copyrighted the moment it was recorded.
A 'notice' is what you are used to seeing -> Copyright 2007, Joe Bob. or the classic 'circle C' logo. Neither are required for a copyright. Nor does it have to be registered. But feel free to register your term papers or even your resume. Go to: http://www.copyright.gov/register/ for more info.

There is still the question remaining, if it is licensed/registered in Germany... otherwise eromert could easily use it here. Sure there might be a copyright violation at hand, but if nobody has licensed/registered the stuff here, than nobody will enforce the laws to prevent the usage.

About everything that is publicly released and costs money is probably a violation of a copyright of some sort (i.e, there's no written consent from the author/shareholder). So basically in a nutshell, yeah it's illegal.
But as Jinto Lin pin-pointed out, the chances of you being accused of copyright infringement is virtually zero if you're referring to obtaining. Although it depends on your action. |
