Madoka Magica - Q & A

This thread is for those of you with questions about the Madoka Magica anime or manga. There are many questions that don't need a whole thread to discuss them. A simple practical answer straight from the anime or manga without any speculation can solve these connundrums. If someone has such a question about Madoka Magica which can be solved by answering with facts from an official source, then please ask that question here.

Please don't post in this thread unless you are asking a question or answering one. Please remember that it only takes 1 person to answer a question. And don't speculate! You can only reply with cold, hard, merciliessly unforgivable facts. If you have to speculate, then please just tell the querrant that no answer is known, but here are some facts that might help him make up his own mind.

Make sure you use spoiler tags if your question is about the anime, manga, or any non-anime source. Untagged spoilers are risking a ban. There are two ways to create clearly marked spoiler tags, as shown in the following:

The easy way: By simply clicking on this icon which can be found in the Quick Reply or Reply to Thread template. This is how I create spoiler tags.
or
The macho way: By using those uber vB codes as shown in the following...

Spoiler Tag Example
Don't forget to use a title for the spoiler!
...becomes...

It's one cour, which equals 12-14 episodes (more than likely 12, with bonus episodes released with the DVD/BD's).

Only 12? Damn. And it's an original anime too.

They better not pull and Bakemonogatari, I hope it ends with closure on the allotted TV time.

Yes.

More precisely, they are in 2nd year right now, going onto 3rd year in a few months (which means they should be around 14 years old).

If you translate it to Latin.

However, this site says it should "Puella Maga."

Well it does help having the title stay the same in all western languages. Anime often gets licensed in France and other European countries.

(oh, and this way the title is equally unreadable to most people).

Is there a pool or list of (literaly) references? Such as Faust or the recent Hey Diddle Diddle one. But I also think some not so perceivable things are important (read:interesting). Such as what the woolen things in the first few episodes say, or what the words and lines in the small time frames that sometimes come up say. Like the Homu Homu one if I remember correctly. And have there been references in all the episodes so far?

If I haven't forgotten my Latin, magi is either nominative plural (as you said) or genitive singular. Since nominative plural doesn't really make grammatical sense, the only grammatical way to interpret "puella magi" would be with "magus" as a genitive noun rather than an adjective, i.e. "girl of the wise man"/"girl of the magus" instead of "magical girl" which as mentioned earlier would have to be "puella maga."

On the other hand if "puella" is supposed to be ablative it could be "the wise men with/from/by the girl." But who knows.

EDIT: @omimon I believe it's official, otherwise you'd be getting jihouonna telling you the video was removed. Especially because the videos are region blocked, which would not happen with a normal upload.

It comes out in a couple of days according to amazon.

For the etymology on magus, magi, magia, magika ... keep in mind that they originate in persian, and as terms came to the west during the seleucid empire. The terms are still in use at least in greek, and I think both in arabic and persian, so the transliteration might be based in any language other than latin.

If the basis is greek (though I doubt it), we have the following:
magus/magos -> mage, wizard (noun, singular, male)
magi/magoi -> mages, wizards (noun, plural, male)
magia -> witchcraft, magic (noun, singular, female)
magika -> magical (adjective, plural) or spells (noun, plural, neutral)

It is implied that Kyouko basically uses her power to steal food. This is quite obvious when she says "MG do not need money".
