the Gate was closed off to prevent an alien invasion from another world (!), like, bugs a la Starship Troopers. The JSDF was able to fend it off with help from Giselle's dragons, but the link to Japan was severed.

Some 4,600 JSDF personnel, including Itami, was left behind in Alnus to protect the Special Region's side of the portal while the rest (including some Alnus community residents) was evacuated to Ginza.

It was due to terrorism plot by Lady to sabotage the building of the new Gate.
The damage that shook the gate caused gap in the timeline of two worlds.

The Gate was closed because it was never meant to be held open as long as it was. As a result, it was putting tremendous strain on both worlds resulting in some major problems developing. They had to close it or one or both worlds would have been destroyed.

Lelei took time to learn how to open a new Gate. Her first success opened to a world that was hostile. Itami was sent through due to his semi-immortal status and he ran back almost immediately screaming for them to close the gate. Her second attempt reconnected with Japan.

The year in the Special Area is approximately 20+ days longer than Earth's. Being 380-390 days long vs 365 days. The time gap of 1.5 yrs vs 4 yrs of Earth is not affected by that. Not much more I can say on that one.

if we look at the light novel version they are 10 volumes (let's leave the gaides for later) wich i dont know if even in the "light" version they are still way "thicker" compared to other novels but, if you consider the are novel out there at 20+ volumes and still nowhere near the end...

You know, with the ending of the gaiden volume it leaves the possibility of a sequel novel in the same universe. I know the author is doing Rune Troopers, but has he expressed any interest in doing one?

wasn't it confirmed in the afterwords of the last gaiden that he plan to do a real sequel serie?

The author of Rune Trooper and Gate are two different people.
